I invite you to read a history of US healthcare and healthcare reform—or at least a recounting of the struggle to get the ACA enacted. Obama's biography would be one place to go.

The ACA was a titanic struggle. Obama was ready to give up on the plan and go for piecemeal progress. Nancy Pelosi pushed it over the goal line.

It cost the Dems dearly in the mid-terms because there was a struggle to roll it out and because people wanted Obama to work on job creation first.

So no one is just going to hash out "a new health plan" anytime soon. The best you can  hope for, I think, is that the next Dem president will push for gradual expansion of Medicaid and Medicare as well as strengthening of the ACA.

I think we can all stop listening to the GOP when it comes to healthcare. As Islander pointed out, they pushed the notion of "repeal and replace" but only had plans for the first step of that slogan.

What evidence leads you to think the republicans have any interest in this? Trump started the 'repeal and replace' bs in 2015. It's been a decade and there has never been anything. We are one of 43 countries that don't have a form of universal health care, including such notables as Afghanistan, Iran, Nigeria and Yemen.  We are the ONLY major industrialized country without it. The ball has been in their court forever and they have done nothing with it.

Fascism and Communism / Socialism are right next to each other.  The middle or center is 180 degrees opposite.  The only difference being is that (usually) Fascism is based on nationalism and Communism is a globalist thing.

Looking back at WW II, the Germans and Russians were fighting each other over the same goal albeit for different purposes.

Horseshoe theory has limited use. Every centrist is right next to them as well.

You miss a crucial difference, aside from nationalism vs. internationalism, namely that fascism is pro-capitalist while socialism is anti-capitalist.

There are more salient differences, incl. fascism's opposition to socialism/Marxism, etc., etc.

Some have argued that fascism is the result of a crisis of imperialism.

What is the messaging? Republicans arent funding healthcare for those who need it. And of course everyone is blaming the high price of drugs... when its not the price of drugs (which have actually been deflationary for generics - 90% of scripts- and below inflation for brand.)

But what are they really fighting for? Maintaining subsidies paid to insurance companies.

What should the messaging be? We need to help patients who cant afford their deductibles and out of pocket costs.

Or "our healthcare system is so f'ing dysfunctional that it takes government subsidies for a majority of the country to be able to afford insurance that doesn't cover a basic level of care".

Empires come and go, indeed. As long as empires rule the world (or parts of it) there can be no world-peace, as empires always seek to oppress people(s). A true world-brotherhood of all people requires a more spiritual consciousness of each individul human being than "I want to become rich". Or "powerful ". Or "famous". A higher state of "moral evolution" we all can rally around!

If you start with “fuck the free market” then, well - it’s not enough to just be disgruntled, but to talk about a practical replacement that folks can rally around.

Agreed. Yet I think it would be utopia for man's current state of moral evolution. (We all want to become rich and famous..)

Us / them.

The thing is (and a big part of why I pick platypus), it's all us. The government is supposed to be for us, and generally it really is. Yes there is some corruption and undue influence form corps/groups that shouldn't wield it. But farmers have always been taken care of, middle America was never 'abandoned', no one was 'forced' to change gender. One side believes everyone is human and should have healthcare and clean water and education, the other side is demonstrating that they believe benefits should only exist for themselves and the opposition should be punished.

Let's get some more choices", which seems like the reasonable response to me.  The scary part to me, is a lot of the people look at  the current results and either thing "yeah, that's what I wanted", or "oh well, at least it's not happening to me (yet)", both of which are abhorrent to me. But I've always realized I'm not in any majority and I'll probably have to pick "platypus" or not bother.  I'm lucky, I have options if things go poorly for most of the country. A lot of people don't.
