Growing up in Pittsburgh I was addicted to WDVE's programs like they were TV shows.  There was Jimmy & Steve in the morning (and they were actually funny!), the Electric Lunch at noon, Herschel the Afternoon Driver came on at 3, then they did the Top 5 at 5, the Side at 6...there was one DJ in particular, Jack Malloy, who had the best shows, he did Sunday Morning Oldies (how may people here have heard the studio version of Bob Seeger's "Turn the Page"?)  and then Wednesdays at midnight he did "For Headphones Only" ("Enter another dimension in music..."), *really* neat stuff if you were able to stay up that late.  I managed to record some on cassette which sadly have disintegrated...

Boston and Greater Boston area.
One of the oldest AM stations in the country, and is still going strong with 50K watts of power, WBZ-AM was a music station long ago, but now is mostly News during the day and talk during the night. It had got me through many a night when mom and dad were sick and in the hospital.

A once powerful station in the 60's to the 80's was WBCN, a rock station which has been relegated to the internet this past year.

A station I listen to when working in the yard when I can't listen to RP is WXRV The River, which is the closest thing to RP over the air waves. And it is one of the

We've had many that have fallen by the way side over the years, either changing their style or were bought out by a larger chain. One of my favorite station long gone was WCGY which was once owned by Curt Gowdy the "voice" of the Boston Red Sox.

The only complaint is that we used to have a great Jazz station, but was sold and became a Talk FM station in the early 2000's. And these are just a few of the varieties we have today.

Once upon a time, it was Detroit. In the first-half of the '60s, we had three Top 40 stations battling it out: WKNR, (ABC-owned) WXYZ and the powerhouse CKLW (although Keener kept cleaning others' clocks in the ratings).

In '67, San Francisco ex-pat Larry Miller arrived at WABX-FM and so began the revolution. Keener soon followed with Russ Gibb at WKNR-FM, and ABC with WRIF-FM. Public radio station WDET played great jazz, as did WJZZ-FM.

San Francisco WAS the home of the best stations ever.  KKCY, KSAN, KFOG, KKSF.  God I miss living in the bay area.  I'm in a cultural vacuum in this backwater in northern California.

KUSF Moves to Online Only Format

Radio Broadcast Rights Sold to Classical Public Radio Network

01-18-2011
KUSF

No more 90.3 FM. KUSF is moving to online only format and after the necessary engineering work, the station can be found at www.KUSF.org

The University of San Francisco (USF) announced today that KUSF, the university’s radio station, is moving to an online only format, effective immediately. The university has reached an agreement to assign the FCC license for radio frequency 90.3 FM to Classical Public Radio Network, which is launching a non-commercial classical music station in the Bay Area. CPRN is owned by University of Southern California.

Read the press release from USC and Entercom Communications.

The call letters KUSF were not sold, and the KUSF logo and all music inventory will remain USF property. All KUSF staff will be offered similar positions at KUSF.org.

There have been a number of mainly 90's hits stations (some go further back) popping up across the nation, most dubbed Gen X Radio.  Considering I'm part of that generation, I still see these types of stations as Jack FM for the 25-54 set (considering how far back they decide to go 1980-2005, 1990-2010, etc.).

WDHA in North Jersey (the ROCK of North Jersey) is good as well.  Unfortunately, they don't have a very large area that you can hear them in.... I know I mis-worded that, but you know what i mean.

I am guessing a long time ago, it might have started as a college radio station, but it hasn't been been at least for 20 years. maybe more.

V 107.3

After nearly 20 years of crap, Cleveland now has a terradio station actually worth listening to.  Its WMMS reincarnated as it was back in its heydays of the 70's and 80's when music meant something.  They have all the old MMS archives of some of the best live music ever recorded and mix it in regularly.  If you lived here then, you will think that you have died and gone to heaven.  They stream.  Sure, they have new stuff in heavy rotation, but they gotta pay bills.  Very few commercials.  Worth a listen even if you have never been to Cleveland.

I tune in to WFUV all the time, during the week that is. The weekends, they go do some crazy programming with some kind of Irish thing all saturday morning, and then they broadcast a catholic mass on Sunday morning (and then follow it with more irish programming). Its like its two different radio stations.
