geordiezimmerman wrote: I agree inasmuch as the US military's takeover of the Port-Au-Prince airport and prioritization of their own relief traffic there over other folks' is uncalled-for and leaves a very bad impression abroad. Having said that, we Americans are doing more than any other single nation for Haiti. We just (as usual) need to be more sensitive to other countries' intentions and work with them rather than hold them at arm's length. We need this relief effort to succeed, and lay the groundwork for Haiti's recovery and economic development. This can't be a US-only operation.

Yes, a compassionate move on their part. No self-aggrandizement, just the spirit of giving. You can find a list of the performers on this blog: Haiti For Haiti Now Performers

geordiezimmerman wrote: That's what they are saying but that's not what was being reported on the news here. The U.S has taken COMPLETE control of the airport and are the ones making the decisions on who can land and who can't. Yes there is limited space but that doesn't mean all that space should be reserved for U.S troops. This is not a dig at the U.S, It's merely what I'm hearing on the UK news, reporters directly at the airport interviewing people from all sides. It seems that people are now beginning to blame each other. Roads are blocked with U.S troops, aid agencies, the U.N and Haitian helpers as no one seems to be controlling this. The french lady who has just been on has said their plane like the one in the report you linked me too has tried landing 3 times and each time has been diverted. This plane is full of ESSENTIAL medicines which has been urged for from the surgeons and doctors and was told it was a priority. The U.S naval ship that has been there for a few days now has sent out NO aid at all, nothing! Someone over there though needs to organise this properly before they all fall out, it's not a place to be arguing with one another, that's not going to help at all. It's all very difficult I suppose.
First, The US and what is left of the Haitian Government, signed off on an agreement granting the US control over the airport. That was done to instill some order in the immediate aftermath of this horrible human tragedy. Second, without troops, US or other, it would be impossible to bring order in the chaos that understandably exists. If there is no entity to control traffic, aid won't flow through clogged streets. Please note that when it is all said and done, the US will have provided more troops, more materials, more dollars and more effort, than most other nations, combined. Third, the US Naval vessels are taking on those in need of assistance that only a hospital can provide. In this case, surgical wards and follow-up. That should thwart any suggestions of a lack of aid. Odd, but when something of this magnitude strikes somewhere in the world, someone finds the US a good target for whatever complaints they care to register. Hell, the French have accused the US of being an occupying force. Damn if we do, damn if we don't. But damn it, we always do. And that is something most if not all of our critics cannot claim. This Yank is proud of how his Country, led by his President, has responded without hesitation and with great charity and concern. I really can't be bothered with petty complaints at this moment in time for a people in such dire needs.
