The irony alone is enough to stop a clock...Bet the creator of the Mayan Calendar never saw this coming. Maybe if the politicians all wore brightly colored bird feathers and worshiped the sun from yon pyramid it would be more bizarre, but I doubt it. Besides, all those birds are extinct or endangered, which is a another thing to consider...

It guarantees a bulwark against Democrat nonsense and give Cruz a purpose other than runner up nominee.

You do realize that all those here, Congress, the President and everyone else who has their panties in a bunch over this is just a waste of time. What we are really talking about is whether Obama or Clinton gets to nominate the next SCOTUS. If Obama really gets myopic about it and let's face it, being egocentric is the number one shared quality of almost all of our leaders certainly Presidents, then he should just wait it out in the name of being conciliatory so Clinton can then nominate Obama. A bunch of fuss over nothing because it will be a cold day in Hell before a Republican ever occupies the White House again unless they do a major overhaul of the party. I think after RFK was assassinated, Warren had told LBJ that he was going to retire before the upcoming election in order to give time for Johnson to nominate a replacement before Nixon took over. Or, that's one of the stories I've heard over the years.

DaveInVA wrote:" And in 1968, President Lyndon B. Johnson nominated Abe Fortas, who was already sitting as an Associate Justice, to succeed Chief Justice Earl Warren, but the Fortas nomination was the target of a bipartisan filibuster – principally in reaction to the Warren Court’s liberalism and ethical questions about Fortas, although objections were certainly also made that it was inappropriate to fill the seat in an election year. That filibuster prompted Homer Thornberry, whom Johnson nominated to succeed Fortas as an Associate Justice, to withdraw his name from consideration in October 1968, because there was no vacancy to fill. Moreover, the failure to confirm Fortas as the Chief Justice did not leave the Court short a Justice, because Chief Justice Earl Warren remained on the bench." So Warren didn't resign or die, but Johnson nominated someone else to be Chief Justice? I know the rules for replacing the Supremes are nebulous, but that seems odd.
