Thanks.  It took a few shots to get decent ones of them.  They had been congregating around that particular spot but kept leaving when I approached.  I had to crouch sort of motionless to the side for a while and wait for them to come back.  There was a single butterfly of a different species with them.  I couldn't get a good photo of him - I think it was a Spicebush Swallowtail - mostly black wings with blue and orange spots towards the "tail".

I looked at the PowerShots too - the Rebel I picked out had a good deal that just was for a limited time.  I don't know how many reviews and articles I read after a while and I have a few friends who are "professional" photographers who I talked to.  Essentially I was thinking of buying myself (for my birthday in March) a DSLR or a new electric guitar (there were a number of Gretsch models that caught my eye), but it came down to: I have 4 guitars (one of which is electric) and I don't expect to be forming a band or playing out anywhere soon.  If I were to play out somewhere soon it would likely be a solo gig with one of my acoustics.  The only SLR cameras I have are two old Minoltas - which both still work fine - but a DSLR seemed like more of a "logical" decision.
Nice photo by the way.

I have an SX-60 and really like it except I'm not getting the sharpness I would like, probably because of the small sensor. The zoom and anti-shake are amazing.

Fundamentally, the camera that takes the best pictures is the one you have with you, and the small size means I will take it along when I'm not going out only to do photography. Looking at getting a larger mirrorless camera though and starting to do more photography trips.

eta: nice photo!

Thanks! You are right about having it with you, and this camera allows me to take macro and telephoto shots without changing lenses. It is the first camera I've owned though that does not use lithium AA batteries. These batteries are smaller and lighter, but they don't last as long.

Yeah, it didn't come with the full manual just the Quick Start booklet.  I downloaded the PDF of the full User Manual - lots of stuff in there - 'more work' for sure.  Took a bunch of shots today at a cool location nearby - I'll post them soon.
