"On this day in 1935, the first can of beer is sold in Richmond, Va. The beer was produced by Gottfried Krueger Brewing, a Newark, N.J.-based company whose brewery was first constructed in 1848. Though the brewery closed in 1961, Krueger's canning of the popular malt beverage was a method that caught on. Today, some 35 billion—yes, billion—cans of alcoholic beverages are shipped each year."
