After a farmer died, his town learned he secretly paid strangers' pharmacy bills

Hody Childress was a farmer living off his meager retirement savings in the small town of Geraldine, Ala.

About 10 years ago, he walked into Geraldine Drugs and pulled aside owner Brooke Walker to ask if there were families in town who couldn't afford to pay for their medications.

"I told him, 'Yes, unfortunately that happens often,'" recalled Walker, 38. "And he handed me a $100 bill, all folded up."

He told her to use it for anyone who couldn't afford their prescriptions.

"He said, 'Don't tell a soul where the money came from - if they ask, just tell them it's a blessing from the Lord,'" she said.

The following month, Childress returned to hand Walker another folded-up $100 bill. And he repeated this every month for years, until he became too weak late last year from the effects of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease to make the trip.

So we helped out with a pet sterilization clinic this weekend. The group we volunteer with sponsored this, organized the vets and coordinated a lot of the chaos - They do the hard work we just chip in here and there. This clinic was for a local area where there are a lot of pets and they rarely get vet attention. We are trying to get the people, and especially the kids to see pets as their responsibility instead of just an alarm or a rodent control thing. By spaying an neutering, we hit the root of the stray problem and getting them involved with the vets really helps with the long term health of the pet and the relationships. It's really cool to see the kids starting to view the pets as family and playing with them and taking care of them.  The surgeries are all covered by donations and the medications are provided at reduced cost as well.

This clinic did 197 dogs and cats. We didn't loose a single one in surgery or recovery (cats are normally problematic coming out of anesthesia). It was incredibly rewarding to be a part of it.

It's a tough one. I think trophy hunting is stupid but at least they scope out what they are shooting and are unlikely to shoot you, unlike deer hunters. "Oh, he sounded like a deer."

I know lots of people that sound like deer.  Cheney taught me that one.

That tiny spot o' green in the NW corner is the Yellowstone grizzly range. My point is that "there" used to mean a whole lot more of the country, which is the problem. The population of griz has exceeded what the land they're inhabiting can realistically support.

Outgoing Yellowstone Park Superintendent has said as much re: grizzlies and wolves. Successful reintroduction/repopulation efforts. Well done! Now what? People with cabins on USFS lands, hunters, backcountry users are all pretty tightly controlled so they don't attract/interact with bears, or wolves, but the animals are smart and still seek out the easy meals. Well, the wolves don't get into human stuff much, but they do eat livestock. There's a simpler answer there, but the wolves are coming down into the desert and sage, not just picking off high country grazers.

We have bears over here now.
