I have trouble finding swiss cheese, which is my favorite, in New Zealand... so I saw a gruyere (not sure where it was made) which looked exactly like the swiss cheese sold in America. I bought it, tasted it, and it had the same sweet, nutty flavor and texture as the swiss cheese. For me, it's a very acceptable substitute and tastes the same.
Of course, it's not uncommon to find the same foods here as in America, but with different names. What Americans call sirloin is called rump steak here. I'd say it's the same with swiss and gruyere... here in KiwiLand, at least.

Disagree. Swiss always cuts up my mouth, too. But I love gruyere, havarti, and most especially goat cheese..

I really fell for mature gruyere in Switzerland.  The dairy making it was about 50 metres from the house!  The stuff called Swiss- is it some sort of bastardised emmental?
