Fixed gear, really? It doesn't freewheel? Anyway, lose the fork.

Damn yes! I missed that entirely, I was too busy writing him off as a Williamsburg hipster, what with his Brooks contraceptive saddle and fixey gear.

And he gets extra points for original colouring. My H16 was 187** - damn, I can't remember, but she was venerable, and she'd been resprayed.

And had an awfull lot of work done on her undersides. Gawds bless microballoons and epoxy resins.

Don't you love pioneering new roads......and then happening upon something really delightful, like a winding downhill through a canopy of sweet-smelling fir/pine trees and cool breeze? Beautiful.

I probably rode less this summer than I ever had. Hot temps and work, plus a certain amount of laziness, has kept me from doing what I used to enjoy more than anything.

What a perfect morning for a ride......cool air, bright blue skies, shining sun glittering on the Willamette, sweetgrass aromas wafting from farmland meadows, and lots of challenging uphills that got my circulation pumping through every tiniest capillary in my body....and then long, undulating downhills all the way home.

Ahhhhh.

My hill skillz are improving.

What app is that?

I use a Garmin Edge 205 as a bike computer. It's a gps, and the data can be uploaded to several different apps. This app is Garmin Training Center. It keeps a great riding log. I can also lay the tracks down on Google Earth. That can sometimes be pretty cool.

that's only one of the major issues a rear wheel needs to contend with, and really it's quite far down the list of what I'd worry about first. You're only really getting this torsional-warping advantage when you're racking the thing in your granny gear, like hill-climbing etc. My recollection is that the main attraction for 4x is it's a softer ride... it was the fad for people touring with heavy loads back when a stiffer ride wasn't everyone's goal. Less esoteric problems are: unless your hubs are those old-style huge flanges like Campy etc. had in the 70s, the spoke will lay across the head of the next one in the hub. That will absolutely break more spokes than a stiffer lacing (broken spokes usually come from ultra-stiff wheels like radials). And when you break a spoke you can't get it out because there's another spoke covering its head.

IIRC

Yes, they are Sunshine High Flange hubs.  I did the conversion from sew up rims (my old Araya and Super Champion rims were very beat up) to clincher rims over this past weekend.  It was really simple and didn't require relacing.  See HERE  The main problem was removing all the rim glue I had slopped onto the nipples before threading them into the new rims.

I decided to reuse my old double butted spokes (since they are double butted SS and replacing them with comparably nice double butted spokes would be rather expensive) and their length, plus the effective rim diameter of my new clincher rims prohibited me from switching to a three cross pattern even if I wanted to.  So I'll have a nice soft ride.

After switching out the rims, I had to true up the wheels, they're good to within a millimeter or two for now.  After a few weeks of riding I'll check them again.

Just ordered some replacement brake hoods (non-aero, with the brake cables going through the end!) and some new handlebar tape (the old cloth tape looks righteously old school, but is very worn out and offers no vibration absorption).  Will also try to soften the leather saddle with some conditioner.  We'll see if my old butt can handle a leather saddle after years of gel/foam saddles.

Took it out for a spin to go to dinner tonight. Like most riders of modern multispeed bikes, I've gotten into that lazy "coasting" habit.  Every time I went to stop pedaling the bike reminded me of exactly how much forward momentum we were carrying.

You're probably right - I should have a bike tech watch me while I'm riding to see if I'm matched up to the handlebars for my height, and help me adjust accordingly. And Scott - new grips just might do the trick. No numbness or tingling, just a little fatigued by the end of the journey (could possibly be from a weakened right arm from the old tendinitis).

I should be able to get myself gloves in time for my birfday.

I'm doing way more strenuous and aggressive riding these days than I've ever done in my life (I stuck to a lot of level bike trails back east rather than venture out into the hilly countryside). Now I'm venturing.....and in the words of Chicago "I do believe I'm getting stronger every day."

I explored a new route through the country to another town down south, and it had just enough rolling hills to make it both a challenge and a delight. The last one being a continual 3 mile graduated downhill all the way back to my house! Wheeeee!
