I was alone in my first apartment, in Northern Virginia, reading and listening to records. When a record ended, I turned on the radio; they were playing all Beatles/Lennon songs. I thought "well, that's cool" until the DJ came on and said why. I was so devastated (my dead brother had been a big Beatles fan, and had looked very much like John) I called the radio station just to have someone to talk to.

Just a matter of taste I guess, I used to read him most sunday mornings in the Calender section of the L.A. Times, it was kind of a self-torture, he hated almost every band I liked.

'nuff said... A roommate and I had fallen asleep in the living room with the tv still on, me on the floor, him on the couch. Someone broke in to whatever program was on and announced that he had been shot. We both woke at the same instant, asking, "Did he just say Lennon was shot?!?" It's amazing to me that we were both sleeping through the tv noise until that announcement cut through and roused us both from our sleep. Kind of ironic to awaken to a nightmare.

Middle of my 3rd year of college. I remember Walter Cronkite telling us the news and thinking "John Lennon is the least likely person I know of to be assassinated....he never deserved this."

It's one of those, "Where were you when..." events.

I was sitting at my kitchen table in an old farmhouse in Wisconsin the day I heard the news on the radio
I still hear him singing.... ImagineImagine there's no heaven It's easy if you try No hell below us Above us only sky Imagine all the people Living for today... Imagine there's no countries It isn't hard to do Nothing to kill or die for And no religion too Imagine all the people Living life in peace... You may say I'm a dreamer But I'm not the only one I hope someday you'll join us And the world will be as one Imagine no possessions I wonder if you can No need for greed or hunger A brotherhood of man Imagine all the people Sharing all the world... You may say I'm a dreamer But I'm not the only one I hope someday you'll join us And the world will be as one Happy Xmas (War Is Over); John Lennon / Yoko Ono So this is Xmas And what have you done Another year over And a new one just begun And so this is Xmas I hope you have fun The near and the dear one The old and the young A very Merry Xmas And a happy New Year Let's hope it's a good one Without any fear And so this is Xmas For weak and for strong For rich and the poor ones The world is so wrong And so happy Xmas For black and for white For yellow and red ones Let's stop all the fight A very Merry Xmas And a happy New Year Let's hope it's a good one Without any fear And so this is Xmas And what have we done Another year over A new one just begun
And so happy Xmas We hope you have fun The near and the dear one The old and the young A very Merry Xmas And a happy New Year Let's hope it's a good one Without any fear
War is over, if you want it War is over now Happy Xmas
