Dead audiences went downhill once farrows of frat boys started showing up.

The only thing worse than a drunk frat boy on acid is a farrow of them.

Starting with my first day ever in Denver, I've been to a zillion shows there over the past 20 years of all kinds - the annual reggae show, the blues fest, Rush, The Police, REM, Crosby Stills and Nash, and on and on...including The Dead.  The impact of 10,000+ people at that particular venue has a definite impact, it's not a concert hall indoors.  Been soaked with rain there enough to bring rain gear on a clear day.  The Dead was no worse than any of them, better than many of them.  It's just another show, unless you have a bias against hippies and free spirits and more than a few lawyers, accountants, executives, homemakers, secretaries, middle school teachers, cops, and you name it filling the place to capacity to see one hellava great show.  A matter of taste I suppose.

Three days of understanding
Of moving with one another
Even the cops grooved with us
Do you believe me?
Yeah!

Down in Red Rocks!

The explanation was something to do with a shoulder problem following a workout
All my years watching this band, I've never seen Weir do anything like this...it would be very much out of character for him to show up wasted for a show.  Perhaps he took some meds to deal with the shoulder, and then a couple drinks...  Given the band seem not taken back when he fell, i would believe they knew of his condition before the show started.  Still very odd.

i read that phil said bobby was taking muscle relaxants for the shoulder....

Hmm, I saw an exuberant Bobby Weir fall on his ass once. He was backing off the microphone and fell back on his butt.

Even before I saw him fall I was thinking he might be having some kind of cardiac issue.
