OTOH: Thursday's protest failed to materialize, possibly because the disruption of cell phone service made organization and coordination difficult. Possibly? BART was just shooting in the dark? I don't know which is a bigger embarrassment.

pilate wrote:...Any recommendations for cool hotels to stay in SF? Well...there's the Mark Hopkins, conveniently located atop Nob Hill, with prices to match. Less famous, more reasonably priced and equally well-located is the Stanford Court. It's a first class hotel, right around the corner from the Mark. Personally I think it's better located for transportation — try getting your car parked at the Mark at check-out time; the Stanford court is closer to the main cable car lines, and closer to Chinatown. Since this is their first visit here, I thought we would venture away from SF for a couple of days. I was thinking of driving down to the Monterey/Carmel area for a couple of days (Saturday/Sunday). Would we have stuff to do for two days? Any recommendations - places to see, eat, live, etc., in the area? I don't know about particulars, but a drive down Highway 1 is sure to please. If you're leaving from SF, stop by the Cliff House, then take a stroll around the area to see the other Sutro leftovers before heading down the coast. Nothing much is going on in Half Moon Bay that weekend, but it's a nice place to make a pit stop. And then there's Santa Cruz, of course. If you take the PCH route, the sights along the way can fill up two days easily. If your friends are golfers, Pebble Beach might be the only stop for them. (I'm not, but know enough golfers to know that they can be a bit...obsessive about the game.) Come to think of it, you might plan your itenerary around your friends' interests. The stuff that I wouldn't miss might bore them to tears, and vice versa. For example, I could spend a whole day at an aquarium or science museum (or NASA facility). I'd rather take out a sailboat over a fishing boat, etc. What do they like in general?

Need advice on a 3-day plan I'm trying to work out. I have friends visiting from Hong Kong and they will be in SF from 28th to 1st (Thursday-Monday). This is their first time visiting the West coast, but they don't want a super-hectic plan because they would have just come from traveling in Brazil. They will be on their own on Thursday and I will meet them Thursday night-Friday early morning and we will go to Napa/Sonoma for a day. Any recommendations for cool hotels to stay in SF?

We need to be back in SF on Monday — I drive back that morning and they fly back to HK that night.
Suggestions on alternative activities to do within about 100 miles of SF also welcome.
