Want to start with Arafat walking out on Camp David or go further back? How about "From the river to the sea?" Maybe just the absence of any statement from Hamas about being willing to accept a 2 state solution?

Voice from a distance..   I  think everyone can understand why the Israeli / Palestine issue is so intractable. You have an ungodly mix of British colonialism, the Holocaust and hundreds of years of Jewish persecution, the three big monotheistic religions colliding, geopolitical interests competing with each other, US domestic politics playing a massive (and distorting) role, Arab identity issues, radical Zionists, etc. etc.

To think there is a simple solution would be myopic in the extreme.

A two state solution necessitates some kind of consensus in each state to at least acknowledge the other state's right to exist. And this consensus needs to be sturdy and prevail over time.
With every hothead blowing up a bomb or every settler dispossessing a Palestinian that kind of political consensus gets eroded. Looks like we are miles away from that solution.

A one state solution might indeed be the mathematically cleanest solution, but it's not going to happen as, due to their history, I can't see enough people in Israel ever accepting a state where they are once again the minority. Moreover, when surrounded by nations and Palestinians who repeatedly avow to wipe the state of Israel off the map, I can kind of understand their calcitrance.

It is all pretty depressing. What annoys me most, is how so many in the west jump on the bandwagon and fail to allow any nuance in their analysis. OTOH, what gives me most hope are seeing those numerous cases where Israelis and Palestinians come together and celebrate the richness of their cultures, be it music, cooking or the arts. It looks to me that this region is where the battle of orthodoxy vs. diversity is the most acute on the entire planet. Maybe we would all do better to view the entire conflict from that perspective than to willingly put on the religious/geopolitical blinkers that are so quickly abused and manipulated by arseholes wanting to maintain their grip on power.

A two-state solution is dead in the water.   Too much opposition in both Israel and the USA Palestine.   The illegal settlers in the West Bank now outnumber the number of Palestinians who were ethnically cleansed in 1948.

I got footage of the self-immolation at the Israeli embassy in DC.

The individual, wearing fatigues, introduces himself as “an active duty member of the U.S. Air Force and I will no longer be complicit in genocide.”

After ignition, he repeatedly yells “Free Palestine.”

Familiar. Security needs trump international law...

Bla-blah-Blinken: "inconsistent with international law," aka illegal.

Meanwhile, the military-industrial-congressional complex continues to profit from this the other war. The U.S. State Department recently boasted of a 56% increase in foreign arms sales in 2023, much of that going to Ukraine. More and more, the State Department is simply a tiny branch of the Pentagon, “negotiating” through arms sales and shipments and boasting of profits from the same.

A day late and a dollar short.... but significant all the same given the decades of de facto US support for the settlements.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken condemns the Israeli settlements.
