I started with English Settlement, and the production there (Hugh Padgham, IIRC) is just wonderful, so the songwriting is framed properly.
Then there's the miraculous Skylarking, produced beautifully despite lots of band angst by Todd Rundgren. The band has since come around to admit that he did a great job.
The rest of their catalog is hit/miss, but full of bright songwriting and idiosyncratic stuff.
My favorite period of their music was Drums & Wires, Black Sea, and English Settlement.
Thanks SD and SFW. I listened to a few tunes. The Kinks popped into my mind. Other stuff sounded like 50s or 60s jazz, so I stopped doing that.
Which is all sort of funny because you liked Steely Dan (the band, not the Rp User), and that struck me as "if you like this, then you should like that." I'm not a fan/am unfamiliar with most of Steely Dan's output, though, so hey.

Range. Quirky. Some of XTC has very much of a 'I can't sit still' feel to it.
Looked around for 1080p YouTube videos and found this one which I quite enjoyed:

Like it or don't, no one likes everything that's good.
I don't know many people who liked XTC from the first note. It's subversive, funny, poppy, dissonant. Challenging and accessible, and sometimes that all comes on at once. They reward some listeners who put on headphones in a quiet room, and have some loud fun singalongs.
Tell why you like XTC. I have trouble getting into it despite the band being admired by those I admire.
