Kurt, look closely: is the face in the emoji smiling or not?

The emoji is teasing, not whipping you back to reality. (what dark corners of the world do you visit where that is a possibility?)

You might want to improve the quality of your herbage, buddy. It could straighten out your political views as well.   .   (only half-kidding about the politics).

I never looked that hard at the emoji.  Another case of communications 101, message sent is not the message received.

Now if you had either added a "jk" as in just kidding or {#Wink} or {#Shifty} or {#Whistle}, that would have been more clear.

It is on you, not me to be clear in the message you send.

But then again, what I think does not matter, it is what you think that is important.

Journalism should foster questions; it provides no answers.

The other thing to teach people is that social media is entertainment, not information.

What's most difficult is teaching people to be inquisitive and reasoned when their interactions are all immediate and emotional.

If you agree with everything you read, then you need to read something else.

Odd.

I don't mind slanted journalism.   Good engaged journalism, for example, will make an argument but will also provide as much context and opposing views to give the reader a sense of the full debate.

Journalism can address consumers with respect or they can treat them with the disdain that many consumers insist upon.  Some of the emotional ramping on CNN and others is embarrassing.

How do you teach people to appreciate quality journalism?   There is lots of it out there if one cares to look.  If news requires ketchup, in this case entertainment, in order to be enthusiastically consumed.  If many people see the world in Dark Ages terms, us vs. them, good vs. evil, virtue vs. sin, will marke-responsive media ever change?

Most reputable news outlets keep a more-or-less hard firewall between the news division and the editorial division. So I wouldn't base my trust totally on the opinion pieces.

That is too bad.  Al Jazeera modelled itself after the BBC.  Overall, the quality of journalism is excellent.

The name is a problem...but I would agree it is generally objective.  There is always an opinion or position, but it's up to the reader to balance them against other sources and determine what's right for themself.

A big problem now is the abundance of free "news".  Telling someone to pay for multiple sources that conflict instead of reading Facebook and what the algo sends them is a hard sell.  I am paying for 4 or 5 news outlets, and I often wonder if it's worthwhile.

Our biggest issue is our societal disinterest in facts.  It's much easier to accept someone else's opinion than it is to form one on our own, and the algorithms quickly size us up and send us what we seem to like so we stay put on their platform.  The answer may be in an algorithm that balances what we've read with the alternative view.  Tech got us into this mess... maybe it can help get us out (but I doubt it).

We need to teach our children logic and reason, not answers.

PBS (NPR) still does one of the best jobs of keeping stuff fact based, I have found. That is probably why they are the most boring.

Jiggz, it's really not hard. Live in a fact-based world, support your claims with relevant evidence from trustworthy sources, reject others' propaganda and your voice will find a wider audience.

But if you want to live in Trumper's Dreamworld, you're not going to get much more attention than a lapdog.

How easily the South African apartheid government of the 1970's and 1980's has been recreated by the legacy media, the Democratic Party, big tech, big business, antifa, BLM etc etc. .
Well done! You're winning now!

Shutting down dissenting voices, banning free speech, twisting narratives of who did what when, refusing to give people with grave concerns about election irregularities a chance to properly present their case and have access to information...the list goes on and the similarities are not lost on many people, not just here in South Africa.
Cancelling people from social media, shutting down people's businesses by deplatforming them from online vendors facilities, labelling a massive chunk of your fellow Americans 'domestic terrorists', refusing them an avenue to connect with each other and make their opinions heard....brilliant!
Shutting down banking facilities, looking for faces in videos of crowds, scanning their social media pages and then scrubbing them from Airbnb....I could go on and on.
Even down to infiltrating their protest marches with your own mobs to spark violence and then twisting the story into what suits you?

Do you seriously think those who see things differently to you are just going to go away? You are more ignorant than people outside of America had ever even imagined.

You are going to turn Trump into some kind of latter day Mandela to his followers, they will boycott your society and your businesses, keep their cash out of your hands, build their own commnicaton methods and platforms, even go underground...organise....and the come back to haunt you.
Go ahead, impeach Trump, ban him, shut him down, force his supporters through public live-on-TV struggle sessions, take away their jobs and possessions and voices, send them to re-education camps.....keep going, you are so winning!

It's despicable, stupid and I am ashamed to see friends supporting this stupidity, inbetween really worrying about them.

You think Trump supporters have been played?
You have no idea what you are talking about.

The media you follow ?- NYT, CNN, MSNBC, WP...whatever - just like the State-run media of the apartheid regime.
Banning dissenting views from being aired and heard? - yeh, the apartheid regime did that too on radio, in print. The words ANC and Nelson Mandela were banned from being spoken. It was illegal to have a picture of Mandela in your house. Keep going, you are on the right path for sure.
The illegitimate President you support?....just like those of the apartheid regime.
Looking the other way or worse - calling the looting and riots of last year peaceful protests? - just like the actions of our erstwhile police and military  being called safety and security measures.
Infiltrating a massive peaceful protest and then triggering violent action and then calling it insurrection? - been there, done that and still have the T-shirt.
Your wheels of justice and security agencies silent on the things that need to be investigated and dealt with, then suddenly becoming vocal and totally dedicated to rounding up and arresting those responsible for the deplorable violence of last week? Yeh, you learnt that from our guys.

It's disgusting to see.

Good luck , you are gonna need it because  you are now so f&^ked.

I suggest you go and read the first chapter of Solzhenitsyns' The Gulag Archipelago.
Then grow up.
Then wake up.

Gotta wade in here briefly:

I've asked Kurt a number of times "Why do you hate America so much?" in this forum as a tease. Typically I follow the question with this emoji

to indicate that I'm kidding. In my last use of that question I didn't include the emoji by accident.

But I was kidding. I'm quite confident that Kurt does not hate America. He holds opinions that might make Archie Bunker blanch, but he loves America.

I saw a lot of that "why do you hate America" question years and years ago in Yahoo's forum before it got shut down. Generally, conservative posters directed it at liberal posters. The question AFAICT was meant to throw someone off the straight and narrow of arguing a point. It wasn't asked seriously. It implies that the person who got asked that question was really out to lunch.

Unfortunately politics are so polarized now that many Americans do think that the opposition DOES hate America.

What troubles me more than conservative opinions is the willingness of some conservative people to believe and say things that have little to no basis in facts or reality. QAnon and the belief that Biden stole the election are examples coming to mind. You never got back from lunch if you believe that sort of stuff.

It's even worse when you have someone like Ted Cruz—very well educated and experienced in legal matters—go along with Trump's fantasies, EVEN THOUGH they know that the fantasies are BS.

That kind of behavior shows a disregard or even hatred of our national political community and institutions. People like Cruz know they're spouting destructive lies for their own gain but apparently think that the political institutions and public faith in them are strong enough to withstand the damage. But people like Cruz are wrong. They are corrupt, amoral opportunists of the worst kind.

Just saw this.  No, I never knew it meant you were kidding when I saw the {#Whipit} emoji.  It was never clear what it was supposed to be other than something like you are my master and were whipping me back to reality or something.
