The World Hasn’t Seen Cicadas Like This Since 1803

This spring, for the first time since 1803, two cicada groups known as Brood XIX, or the Great Southern Brood, and Brood XIII, or the Northern Illinois Brood, are set to appear at the same time, in what is known as a dual emergence.
...
To put that into perspective, one trillion cicadas, each of which are just over an inch long, would cover 15,782,828 miles if they were laid end-to-end. “That cicada train would reach to the moon and back 33 times,”
...
According to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, during a 1990 cicada emergence, “there were reports from people in Chicago having to use snow shovels to clear their sidewalks of the dead cicadas.”

Im pretty sure this same coincidence occurred in ‘71. A friend & were camping in a hardwood forrest & because we had recent experience with weak LSD we doubled the dose. It turned out it was Owesly. So, woopie! My blonde Leo friend had become a magnificent lion & I was sailing some great albums into the woods to stop the ticking insect sounds. We had a Singer battery powered record player & it had lost the phono needle. We made a replacement from a spiral notebook binding. It played the lps but carved fine hairs of vinyl from the records. The cicada were different than our typical ones in that they were blue with red eyes. Trippy :  ) The news made a big deal of the number of bugs for weeks & we all got an education about the different cycles. Cicadas are not only insects but are also true bugs. They have a syphon mouth that they will stab you with when you catch one. Some thought the sound was a sign of the world ending. It was very loud & some folks were suicidal. I have tinnitus, but it doesn’t bother me because I became used to the cicada song every year

The driveway on the other side goes down to four or five set-back houses, most of which are rentals, mostly with UNC undergrads living in them - so sometimes there are noise complaints at night when they have their parties.  There is another house with a family and I've heard loud arguments from there over the years - maybe it was about them, or it could've been some kind of burglary/car break-in issue.

A police car just pulled up my driveway and another stopped on the street in front of my house.  When I came out to ask what was going on they said they realized that they should've gone to the driveway on the other side of the wooded lot beside my house.  Weird.  At least they smiled and apologized.  I have to replace or repair the numbers on my mailbox.

I ignored that and said well I see in the catalog that it comes in 3/8 and 1/2; I want the 3/8. He said 7/16 would be okay; the smallest they'll do is "point-three something." I said "point three seven five?" He says "that could be. Point 3 is three tenths, so that must be it."

So. 0.4375 inches it will be.

Tell them it will be pointed towards Canada, so it needs to be metric.

Mike T from Chicago is on the back of my 1974 Kawasaki H2 triple. We zipped down to Frankfurt from Butzbach to go to S@#* Park to find some red plate or bubblegum black.
I had an old gas mask bag from the WW1 over the side that I kept tools and whatever in and, unbeknownst to us, had fallen over the end of one of the exhaust pipes and was flaming while we flew along. Some guy pulls along side and clues us in. I almost ran off the road. LOL
I pulled over and bested a reset and we moved on downtown to the park and copped. It was the black. Man that hash was good.
And that motorcycle was fast...
I hated losing that cool bag...
