Yeah well, new community transmission cases in the past week, Australia 0. But it looks like Australia has ongoing cases because they report cases from overseas in the hotel quarantine system. Australia did have a bad wave due to a release from the quarantine system that caused a really tough lockdown in Victoria. But I'd say we crushed that one.

kurster,

Thanks for the references.  Even before I came back to this thread, I had the chance to read more about the Jussie Smollett incident and now fully understand what you were referring to.

You were right; I was wrong.  So much for jumping to conclusions.   Sorry.

I just read that Empire has fired Jussie Smollett.    I hope he ends up working in a bottom-rung convenience store position though he might make more money turning tricks.

Hate Crimes Are on the Rise. Why Do Many Still Go Unreported?
As the news spread, many (including the president) were quick to criticize Smollett, or simply amplify this instance of alleged false reporting, which is actually very rare. Researchers who track hate crimes have found that the more common problem isn't false reports; if anything, it's underreporting. In fact, the number of hate crimes has spiked dramatically since 2016—and these numbers are likely much higher than what's represented in the Federal Bureau of Investigation's database.
It's more than a little ironic that Trumpers clutch their pearls complaining about veracity...

Trump has called for a muscular response to journalists and activists but not gay men.

I am at a loss to understand what the latter bolded has to do with anything.  It was painted as a hate crime perpetrated by typical #MAGA homophobic Trumpers.  And bought hook, line and sinker.  Trumpers are assumed to be homophobic, when you pull the white sheets Red Hats away ...      I don't know why you or anyone else would think blaming Trump out of the gate for this so unusual as to needing proof.

.
The attack embodied everything that was wrong with Trump and his supporters, two of which obviously carried out this hate crime.  That was the picture painted by the talking heads and politicians.  It is hard to find any of these unless I stumble on a montage someone has put together that will stay up on youtube.  Searching can only be done by headline now because there is too much content now that comes up in any search to find original stories.  These stories are old now and buried under piles of results.

Here's a couple that I have found so far ...

Rep. Maxine Waters blames Trump for 'MAGA hate attack' on her Empire star friend Jussie Smollett in Chicago, claiming the President is 'emboldening' racists

Ellen Page Tearfully Condemns Jussie Smollett Attack—And the Trump Administration

This is is particularily interesting ...

Racist And Homophobic Attack on Empire’s Jussie Smollett Has People Blaming The Trump Administration

Although TMZ reported that the attackers shouted “This is MAGA country,” Chicago police told the Daily Beast, “There is no report of that being said.”

Despite the police department’s claim that this was not a Trump-related attack, people on social media can’t help but equate the apparent rise in hate crimes with the “racist in chief.”

Well I did find three separate credible sources.  That meets the minimum standard for proof in writing exercises.

Again, I must ask why you or anyone else would find the rush to blame Trump not a real thing ?  Like no one would stoop to that kind of recklessness. Trump is assumed to have done anything terrible one can imagine  There are those who are in love with hating Trump and there are more than a couple of them.  How's that lyric go ... a thin line between love and hate ....

Anyway ...

Have you tried watching sports lately?  Can't even escape it there.  Southpark as usual explains it best with the whole 2016 season.  It is all about tribalism and forcing sides, no one gets out alive, but as the great Libertarian Neil Peart states "If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice."  That is where I have been living.

I was being facetious.  (Hockey is about the only game i watch, and the coverage seems to avoid the outside world.  Could be all those Canadians, and hell we've been playing with russians for years)

Southpark is where I get my news.  Those guys really have a way of nailing everything perfectly.

OK, I caught up to the news and now fully understand what kurster was referring to.  One of the hired assailants was wearing a MAGA hat IRCC.

Jussie Smollett: Empire star 'staged hoax attack over salary'
"US actor Jussie Smollett staged a fake attack on himself because he was "dissatisfied with his salary", Chicago police say
Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said in a news conference that he "took advantage of the pain and anger of racism to promote his career".
Mr Smollett is charged with filing a false police report after he said he was the victim of a homophobic attack..."
