I saw Hiss Golden Messenger in Harrisonburg, February 2017. Front row seats. He's really good.

I've seen a few times him before - he's based in Durham, so he used to play a lot around here. He's more well-known now so he doesn't do as many local shows. This time he was playing with a whole, electric band - kinda swamp-rock, bluesy stuff. I've seen him before when he does acoustic stuff with maybe one other guitarist or back-up singer.

Merge Records was celebrating their 35th anniversary and lined up over 30 bands to play over four nights at the local rock club.  Yesterday afternoon they threw together a little outdoor show behind my local watering hole, with four of the artists: Hiss Golden Messenger, Eric Bachmann, Quivers, and Imperial Teen.  I had never heard of Quivers before - they are from Melbourne and play cool, jangle-pop kind of stuff - nice melodies and harmonies.  Imperial Teen is the latest project from Roddy Bottum - formerly of Faith No More.  This band is more of an indy/dream-pop outfit, not a metal band.  It was a good time but too crowded to get any good photos.

Yeah, it's outside - near the entrance.  The place is cash-only, so that's why they got it put there, but the "hours" juxtaposition is kind of curious.

Good to know.   After heading over to the site... I'm going to have to find the documentary on Prime...

Cool! My good friend here was a writer for Creem in New York for years and also worked for Warner Music as a band or artist facilitator. That boy has tales...
