It is an old song which brings me childhood memories. I love this song.
First thought, I was thinking Gwen Stefani until I looked at the screen...
I listen to this as a child might who is frightened of the dark and all the spooky, imaginary creatures that live under the bed and lurk in the closet, and just waiting until the sun comes up when they disappear until the next night. As a small child in the early '50s, I would check under my bed for my own imaginary creatures before pulling the covers over my head for protection against those things that go bump in the night. I was terrified of thunderstorms. As I grew up, those fears disappeared but now as an old man, a 1911 with a full magazine is by the bed to deal with anything else that may actually go bump in the night, because when seconds count, the police are only minutes away. My closest neighbor is 700 feet away through a dense forest and now I enjoy a good thunderstorm, but the bogeyman still exists in our society, so be careful.

Reminds me of the roommate who started her own band. She liked this song and sang it often. Her version didn't have that "baby" sounding singer that seems to always bring out the (vocal) haters. The are literally the vocal minority on this song, no bunch of 1-3 ratings...

Apparently it's quite an old practise, and not always associated with weddings. There was a story in my family about an ancestor being killed in a shivaree. One of our relatives doing research actually tracked down the actual event and found the newspaper articles about it in the Montreal Gazette (and it differed greatly from the version that had been told to me).
Apparently a crowd had gathered a couple of nights running (they even put up posters to spread the word) to try to extort money from a wealthy member of the community. In one of these a shot was fired and my ancestor, a servant in the man's household, was killed. He left a wife and children, and his death led to the banning of shivarees in Montreal.

That's a very sweet and sincere response but I don't think the song is that serious. I've always assumed that the self-consciously "spooky" arrangement was a tip that the tone was more gothic cartoonish - like Tim Burton & Henry Sellick's "Nightmare Before Christmas".
This is a rather dark and chilling song... I can't even fathom this kind of paranoia, much less live with it every day of my life. And there are people out there who do live with it every day. My heart goes out to them...

I got to know this lovely song from one of the best playlists ever on YouTube : Wiremux's Modern Noir Songs . Such a shame that she disappeared without a trace and took all her playlists down. Fans put copies of the playlists back up, so there's still some playlists of her to be found.
