There's a nail in the door
And there's glass on the lawn
Tacks on the floor
And the TV is on
And I always sleep with my guns
When you're gone

There's a blade by the bed
And a phone in my hand
A dog on the floor
And some cash on the nightstand
When I'm all alone the dreaming stops
And I just can't stand

What should I do I'm just a little baby
What if the lights go out and maybe
And then the wind just starts to moan
Outside the door he followed me home

Now goodnight moon
I want the sun
If it's not here soon
I might be done
No it won't be too soon 'til I say
Goodnight moon

There's a shark in the pool
And a witch in the tree
A crazy old neighbour and he's been watching me
And there's footsteps loud and strong coming down the hall
Something's under the bed
Now it's out in the hedge
There's a big black crow sitting on my window ledge
And I hear something scratching through the wall

Oh what should I do I'm just a little baby
What if the lights go out and maybe
I just hate to be all alone
Outside the door he followed me home
Now goodnight moon
I want the sun
If it's not here soon
I might be done
No it won't be too soon 'til I say
Goodnight moon

While you're up so high
How can you save me
When the dark comes here
Tonight to take me up
To my front walk
And into bed where it kisses my face
And eats my head

What should I do I'm just a little baby
What if the lights go out and maybe
And then the wind just starts to moan
Outside the door he followed me home
Now goodnight moon
I want the sun
If it's not here soon
I might be done
No it won't be too soon 'til I say
Goodnight moon
No it won't be too soon 'til I say
Goodnight moon

I got to know this lovely song from one of the best playlists ever on YouTube : Wiremux's Modern Noir Songs . Such a shame that she disappeared without a trace and took all her playlists down. Fans put copies of the playlists back up, so there's still some playlists of her to be found.

Indeed, that is a wonderful playlist!!! Thank you for citing it here!

Indeed.  Both RP and the song were new.  This is where I first heard this song and quite frankly about the only place I ever hear it other than when listening to my own stuff.

This is one of the songs that sank the hook in me for RP.  Been here ever since.

One of those songs I first heard (and enjoyed) in the early days of listening to RP (~2000). Part of the RP flavor.
It is an old song which brings me childhood memories. I love this song.
First thought, I was thinking Gwen Stefani until I looked at the screen...
I listen to this as a child might who is frightened of the dark and all the spooky, imaginary creatures that live under the bed and lurk in the closet, and just waiting until the sun comes up when they disappear until the next night. As a small child in the early '50s, I would check under my bed for my own imaginary creatures before pulling the covers over my head for protection against those things that go bump in the night. I was terrified of thunderstorms. As I grew up, those fears disappeared but now as an old man, a 1911 with a full magazine is by the bed to deal with anything else that may actually go bump in the night, because when seconds count, the police are only minutes away. My closest neighbor is 700 feet away through a dense forest and now I enjoy a good thunderstorm, but the bogeyman still exists in our society, so be careful.

Reminds me of the roommate who started her own band. She liked this song and sang it often. Her version didn't have that "baby" sounding singer that seems to always bring out the (vocal) haters. The are literally the vocal minority on this song, no bunch of 1-3 ratings...

This version is good too.

Well, she claims she's "just a little baby", so if the shoe fits....  (Irritating factor higher due to vocal style + lyrics though.)

Wish I could have played this song rather than reading the book a thousand times to my kids. Oh wait a sec, all those readings were awesome.

Love this song. I do think it's got its own native charms, but it helps too to have a narrative association.

Years ago, my daughter had a paper round, delivering the big Sunday papers in our Scottish town. Early Sunday mornings I would take her up to the shop where she picked up her papers for that morning's deliveries — 05:00 a.m., or so.

One winter morning (Scotland — dark!) we were sitting in the car waiting for the shop to prepare the order. On to our local radio came Shivaree "Goodnight Moon", under a moonlit sky. We loved it — still do!

Your little narration immersed me in this specific early morning ,on a winter sunday in Scotland, for a moment erasing the walls of a finishing summer in Beijing. I saw your two shadows in the car, the slight condensation on the windows, the clear echoes of an empty street, and this song, this shared moment. Beautiful suspended moment. Thank you

Just unmuted and thought for a second this was Dolly Parton.

A bit too cindy-lauperish for me, and the bassline gets me a bit on my nerves. 5. Sorry, 4.

No, it's a different riff, but it's a little, 8-note "turn-around", composed of notes from a minor scale.  There are only seven notes in a scale, which may explain the auditory similarity.
Absolutely horrible. Especially the way she sings. What a baby. A baby female. PSD.
more Shivaree please!! {#Music}
Great week for moonlight.  Cool, silvery, bright... Air is warm and perfect for dancing, walking on beach, prowling the woods..

Very basic human animal moon... Cold and wet arrives tomorrow... Seasons are ok in moderation. Some places have too much of each flavor

Life is great on the North Florida beaches...

RP choices this morning fit my weather and enhance the mood... Why do I buy CDs, vinyl, and singles-?  Maybe I should surrender to the inevitable and stream RP throughout the house all the time... Just "ride the music" and let it flow... Thanks, never had that thought with Pandora, spotify, or any over the air-via-internet and competing streams... Yep, I'm a fan and like the sensibility shown.

Yet another good one for tonight's Blood Moon—that's going "good night" soon!
Divinyls anyone?
One of those early (2001-ish) RP songs that made me realize this station was something special…

She does somewhat, but I don't know if I'd say "exactly".  E.G. Daily is an odd person to bring up; it's not as if she's sold a whole lot of records - isn't she primarily a voice actor?  I remember her from a PBS TV program called "The Righteous Apples" in the early 1980s.
Anyhow, good tune.

I really like this half chilling and bouncy nature of this tune. Cool balance if you ask me. If you don't?...it's still cool dammit.
A hint of Dolly Parton's voice in there...
Apparently it's quite an old practise, and not always associated with weddings. There was a story in my family about an ancestor being killed in a shivaree. One of our relatives doing research actually tracked down the actual event and found the newspaper articles about it in the Montreal Gazette (and it differed greatly from the version that had been told to me).

Apparently a crowd had gathered a couple of nights running (they even put up posters to spread the word) to try to extort money from a wealthy member of the community. In one of these a shot was fired and my ancestor, a servant in the man's household, was killed. He left a wife and children, and his death led to the banning of shivarees in Montreal.

Fun to hear this song, which evidently has had regular RP rotation, so long after its release.  Very nice song.

I swear she's channeling Dolly Parton ...
I really like this song..... Very nice!!
...on a full moon too - easy 8
Well, it's now October of 2011, and this song still gives me chills. It'd be a great background song for a Halloween party, because it's so creepy.  I love it, though - listening to it is like watching a horror movie from behind one's hands, but spreading the fingers just a little to see the skeery parts...

She sounds like Kelli Dayton, briefly with the Sneaker Pimps (remember "6 Underground"). Wikipedia says not the same singer, so it must be true...

That's a very sweet and sincere response but I don't think the song is that serious. I've always assumed that the self-consciously "spooky" arrangement was a tip that the tone was more gothic cartoonish - like Tim Burton & Henry Sellick's "Nightmare Before Christmas".
