On the first sax notes, while I was running, I thought of Passport (German group Jazz Fusion from the 80s) or Weather Report or Santana. The first guitar notes removed any doubt from me, it was definitely Carlos. A very good album that I listened to as a teenager. Thank you Radio Paradise for these good old songs.

I don't really like this, but I'm so happy that someone still plays 8+ minute songs on the radio.

I Agree!
Growing up in the 00s hearing the endlessly overplayed Smooth I developed a dislike for Santana. A shame because this is such a great gem. I need to get into this entire album at least and explore his earlier discography.
GREAT TUNE!!   ...no crickets in the desert.  LOL!
I'm not usually a fan, but I do enjoy this album and this song.  He doesn't get into his stock phrases/ tricks until near the end of the album.

First time I noticed that one of the labels wiki puts on Santana is 'Yacht Rock', never heard that term before.

Anyway, this piece of music is awesome, regardless of how it is classfied.

GREAT TUNE!!  I did some research. "Yacht Rock" is soft/ mellow rock, aimed at a middle aged demographic.Inappropriate genre label for this tune!!
This is soooo good. Now please play "Welcome", same band.
 it is playing in Symbols and speaking in foreign languages/ genius

I Agree Completely!! ..."Yacht Rock"?? ...Too Funny!! I just read the WIKI definition, I don't consider it to be a positive complement! ...YOTT Rock -argh!
Excellent!!

Love it.  One of my favourite albums. {#Cool}
One of my 5 best albuns of all time.  The others are from Hendrix !
I saw Santana live when this album came out. I remember him spending a lot of time standing in front of his amps tuning and strumming and listening to feedback. Just like the start of this song … wasn't crowd pleasing.
the second I heard the crickets in the segway I knew this song was coming on.  Long time favorite and still have it in vinyl in quad sound.  Cool

Sublime, ecstatic and powerfully moving, fits perfectly as the album should be listened to as a whole
had my most fantastic acid trip on this baby
One of my favorite albums of all time.  Never get tired of listening to it.
awsome album  {#Roflol}
My favorite Santana album. Awesome, thanks Bill.

This sounds a heck of a lot like this, just not as good... https://www.radioparadise.com/rp_2.php?#name=songinfo&song_id=38879

interesting ,but not something I'd listen to on a rerular basis, just a bit too long.
Nice to hear once again. Had this LP with a record player that auto shut off when the side was done. This album set me to sleep many times.

Latin fusion jazz .... Bueno!

Great stuff!
Sorry, no thanks > PSD here I come but only for the 1st time!
Heard Caravan Serai as soon as RY and Manuel began prior to this...  powerful association with a past desert musical event, hearing this is as evocative as a scent can be in triggering memories. Love the ritards, pacing and flexibility in time...

Because you are prob. young :)

This record was near of the Jazz rock fusion sounds like Return of forever ( C. Corea ), Mahavishnu Orchestra and Larry Corryel band and some more that I got to know and see in the middle of 70's :)

Fantastic! I have been testing these Big Theil speakers and I just finished listening to Welcome. Then this comes on. Hope the neighborhood likes it as much as I do! I saw Carlos Santana when he was playing with Buddy Miles ans it was fantastic. His records around this time had nearly religious significances to us. Or maybe it was the drugs.

Probably one of the best albums ever made, I would say...

+1!

Santana was born in 1947, was 25 when this record was cut, only the 4th of his recording career. Incredible, youthful passion to All the Love of the Universe, Every Step of the Way, and the album as a whole. Borboletta should be on the playlist too. Flor de Canela/Promise of a Fisherman. and Practice What You Preach. Some people, hooked on Beck, Hendrix, or Vaughn, can't get into Santana's groove, but I can't get too much of it.
Thanks, Bill, for playing this amazing guitarist regularly.
Beautiful record! Yet another example of how much creativity was pouring out of musicians during that time. And yet this record didn't show up on many people's radar at that time. Thanks for remembering and including it, Bill!!!
Great track from a superb and under-appreciated album.

Oh, gosh, first year at college and this comes out, confusing millions of Santana fans who expected another Abraxis.

But it was one of the heralds of fusion. And unfortunately fusion turned out to be an evolutionary dead end music-wise, but for about a decade we got a lot of very good music.
You don't see too many songs with this ratings distribution: 35 "2's" and 37 "9's"!

I don't think it's that good or that bad. 7

Back in '72, I would never have had the patience to listen to this...

Peepers!

Spring is coming

...well-played segue through the last four tracks, bill...  {#Good-vibes}
Saw Santana at a university arena show around 1978, what an incredible incandescent performance.  I took my kids to see him last year, my 14 year old daughter practically had to be dragged.  She stood and screamed/snapped cell phone shots for two+ hours, was totally blown away.  Maybe there's hope for the younger generation.
Saw John McLaughlin at a college gig  in 1972 on his Birds of Fire tour. That show is responsible for at least 10% of my hearing loss.  A couple King Crimson concerts did additional damage.  But I do remember the shows, though   {#Laughing}

{#Music} I've loved this ever since it was first released way back when.

Yes  —  another example of why we all live at RP

Santana's crickets leading out of the Doors Spanish Caravan. Nice!
These 70s Santana albums are an important place jazz went in the 1970s. They are a direct follow on from a lot of great 60s jazz like Pharaoh Sanders, Alice Coltrane, Miles Davis. They bring super musicianship together with a spiritual and intellectual journey. It's not 'world music', but they melt so many different cultures and musics into one.

Caravanserai is a band standing at the top of a musical and spiritual mountain.

as much as i like santana, this does seem a bit over indulgent, but everyone has a right to say "hey look at me sometimes" {#Mrgreen} at least C/S has the chops to get us through it without too much damage to our collective psyche's a solid 6

A bit like making pointless posts to fora, eh? ;-|
This number bores me numb, but that's just personal taste - others will love it to bits. Maybe it is "self-indulgent", but then so is most, if not all, popular music - few musicians go into the trade out of some selfless urge to bring music to the masses, rather they usually make music to express themselves, and if the public like it then so much the better and they become rich. I'm hard-pushed to think of an artiste/band that couldn't be called "self-indulgent". There's always the mute button, mate. Shame there are no killfiles, mind.

wish he'd change the tone on his guitar once in a while............. always sounds the same

For some reason, I keep expecting Miles Davis to bust in on trumpet.
Santana made this when they were listening to a ton of late 60's/early 70's Miles. The album in its entirety is pretty good, but it was essentially commercial suicide for Carlos. This album and the poor response is partly the reason we have Michelle Branch and Nickelback dude cameos on $antana albums now.
Does anyone remember a band called Gypsy? I was reminded of them today while I listened to this. I've always enjoyed Santana. I grew up in New Mexico - appreciation (if not outright adoration) for Santana was ... natural.
Surprised I never heard this before. Guess I am missing this album.(note to self, quickly put on Christmas list)
So diffrent, I don't have a single album of them, will check it out :)
For me the best Santana album
Cool , this is weird, I like this! :D
Blechh
okee dokee.... when does this end? Can only take so much of the wandering. Great guitar notwithstanding.
Artists have good and bad works. This one is neither - it is simply indulgent.
