She dances and I dream, she's not so far as she seems
Of brighter meadows, melting sunsets
Her hair blowing in the breeze
And she can't see me watching
And I'm thinking love, love
Love, love
It's bittersweet
More sweet than bitter
Bitter than sweet
It's a bittersweet surrender
It's bittersweet
More sweet than bitter
Bitter than sweet
It's a bittersweet surrender
I said I'm older now
I work in the city, we live together
But it's different than my dream
Morning light fills the room, I rise
She pretends she's sleeping
Are we everything we wanted
And I'm thinking love, love
Love, love
It's bittersweet
More sweet than bitter
Bitter than sweet
It's a bittersweet surrender
It's bittersweet
More sweet than bitter
Bitter than sweet
It's a bittersweet surrender
I said I know we don't talk about it
We don't tell each other
All the little things that we need
We work our way around each other
As we tremble and we
As we tremble and we bleed
As we tremble and we
As we tremble and we bleed
It's bittersweet
More sweet than bitter
Bitter than sweet
It's a bittersweet surrender
It's bittersweet
More sweet than bitter
Bitter than sweet
It's a bittersweet surrender
If memory serves, they used to play at the FAC (Friday Afternoon Club) at CU in Boulder a few years before that.
For sure that was the case - I was there! Fun to watch them rise. Todd was in one of my classes at the time
I used to coil cables for them after their shows in Vail back in the early 90s. Still love me some BHTM.

This is ome of those tracks, that
"I can name that tune in three notes"
LOL
saaaaame. Love seeing them live, with my 73 year old dad. He taught me right.

Oh wow...this album is nearly 30 years old? God I'm old... still a favorite. Callaway Gardens had a Music Festival once. Was an extravaganza that was poorly advertised so low attendance. We locals had a blast. The best part of the weekend is when BHT and the Monsters played for us.
For thirty years I thought this was Colin Hay.
Something is wrong with the sound quality of this song, not sure if the original sounds like this.
Good catch - I agree something is a bit "off" (tinny or staticky")
This still gets played very often in Colorado on the radio. As much as I'd like to say I'm sick of it and all my friend make fun of them, I still enjoy it.
I've been a fan of Big Head Todd and the Monsters for decades, I own 4 of their albums, but never saw them live, a pity. There's something unidentifiably unique about their music, I could never explain it to anyone else, it's just ultimately pleasurable. One of the few bands I can still sit through an entire CD in one session.
They're still around and better than ever. Check their website. I've seen them many times, great show and really appreciative for their fans.
Indeed. And it has that beautiful hint of melancholy.
"Crazy Life" by Toad The Wet Sprocket was on a compilation cd that also had "Things We Do" by Indigenous. Mato Nanji and Todd Park Mohr's voices and guitar tones go very well together.
They are the essence of Rock and Roll Blues!

I lived in Platt Park in the early 90's and got to see them at Herman's Hideaway on Broadway several times. We ran into them at Pasquinis when we were feasting on bear and breadsticks, seemed like really down to earth rocks stars (they were getting a moderate following by then).
Yep. My 1st thought!

AWESOME COJohn! YOUR share brings back tons of memories - no doubt we were standing in the same audience. Looks like we were there at the same time 86-89 - those were KICK ASS times for me. Did you happen to know of Craig Maierhofer? He was a close friend who played a lot at Tulagi's etc.

Always enjoy hearing Bittersweet - thanks for playing today! How about tossing in in a live version of It's Alright with Hazel Miller accompanying?
Jeez, can no one see the reference to relationships here? They are singing about the nature of partnerships/marriages/whatever. And to the person who said it's second grade stuff, think about it—relationships often move between sweet and bittersweet. Seems so 'quell duh' as to the lyrics-I find them very poignant. In the ear of the beholder I guess...
Yes, it is more about emotions; being evocative; and, of course, that can be and usually is highly subjective. Songs are not novels.
I am not especially a fan of this group, but have no major complaints about this song.
Tru dat. Saw them live in Columbia, SC at Sprummer and they brought the house down. I mean - one of the best live shows I've seen in my 25 years of seeing all sorts of shows from U2 to Live to Pearl Jam to The Stones to Jack White. Don't miss an opportunity to see these fellas if you can.
He said,,,oh I saw these guys,,they were good,,and you know that Todd guy,,he really does have a big head.
I know,,,, very insightful. It is late Monday for me.
I immedeately felt I met you in Princeton!
This guy was wicked funny. Too bad he is no longer with us. Sorry folks, but I cannot stand the snooze-inducing smarmy stuff.

This is a bizarre song for an airline to plane before take-offs. Or maybe they're being honest and admitting your time with them will be, well, bittersweet. The whole experience will be a study in frustration (bitter), but you'll be happy when you get to where you're going (sweet). At least that's been my experience with flying. Yes, American Airlines, I'm looking at you!

I'll admit I was somewhat ambivalent towards BHTM until I happened to see them live a couple of months ago.
Fan-freaking-tastic! Todd is one mean guitar playing mother effer and I say that with the utmost respect...the dude can play!
Check out any of their cover tunes on Youtube if you're not sure about Bittersweet...Voodo Chile?!?! The dude can play!
OK, that was a little strong, but still...
wait it's great
no i don't like it
could be good
may be bad
now it's over
bittersweet
yup, exactly how I feel - thanks!
Similar but different: spring break, with a friend at Marco Island, early twenties, in college, just hangin' out and watching life go by. It's part of my soundtrack to great times with great friends.
Shore house 1994
Another one of life's enduring mysteries is why this band gets so much airplay on RP? Did they once save Bill's life?

I hope the "EX man" has not in some way harmed himself!!
Fun show.
Ironic that this song is on the "Things To Do In Denver When You're Dead" soundtrack.
More sweet than bitter,
Bitter than sweet."

Excelsior, you sir are one screwed up individual, so negative. Lighten up buddy,
everyone is struggling in this life, but they somehow manage to try and be positive.
They even have pills that may help you! Just a thought.
It's got a very nice melancholic "feel", though.
Agreed. Always enjoyed BHT&TMs back in that era and have not heard this tune for years now. Love that Stratocaster-fed hook. Thanks Bill!!!
