Oh the band marched on in formation
The brass was phasing tunes I couldn't place
Windows open and raining in
Maroon, yellow, blue, gold and gray

The drunks were ricocheting
Off the old buildings downtown empty so long ago
Windows broken and dreaming
So happy to leave what was my home

With a sky blue sky this rotten time
Wouldn't seem so bad to me now
Oh, I didn't die, I should be satisfied
I survived, it's good enough for now

With a sky blue sky this rotten time
Wouldn't seem so bad to me now
Oh if I didn't die, I should be satisfied
I survived, it's good enough for now

Holy smokes!

I've seen hundreds of bands in my life and the live performance of Wilco is always exciting and enthralling.  They have a way of being precise to the original AND improvisational all at the same time.  To watch them do some of that bizarro sonic stuff from Yankee Hotel Foxtrot live is to truly scratch your head (after taking your hat off to the band) and say, "how did day do dat?".   They have a couple absolute guitar wizards, not to mention Tweedy on guit too, that MUST be seen live.

You clearly left the show waaaaay too soon.  I'd venture a guess at 2-3 songs in at most.  I sure hope you were at a festival, with other options, because you missed out that day/night.
I think this my be my absolute favorite Tweedy song, solo or band.

I did this for LZ in the first week I was a member, and gave them all 10's.

That was like 15 years ago now.  Bah.

I'd much prefer ELO's Mr Blue Sky. Wilco and out.

 It's good in off-centered rhyme.

Some folks find it impossible to say something nice without qualification.  Sadly, they often don't have that problem when things are the other way around.

BTW, Iove Tweedy and Wilco. This song is lovely.
A lovely song from a brilliantly flawed band.
I cannot (and do not) say WILCO is a bad band!

Still - I hear them as being VERY-VERY avarage and that is not because the guy can't sing!
Must be an American thing!

I miss everything what stands for Rock'n'Roll!

Ultimately British Rock is closer to what ROCK really means!

Which do you miss most, the constant yawning, or the constant puking?  When someone's ratings are so significantly negative, and they stick around crapping on everything ... well, they deserve to be chased away.
Nice song. Thoughtful. Simple.  Well-crafted.

Hilarious when someone else puts comments on your phone while you're in the toilet.
I love wilco but this one sounds like an air supply song to me

I like Wilco, but probably want to listen to this played backward
I kinda like this tune by Wilco. I personally feel that his voice is mixed just a tad too high for the mix. Almost as if he's singing in your ear with a band playing in the other room or something.

I've posted this on some of the other songs from this CD, maybe this one, not sure...but while I love all things Wilco, this CD really has a special place for me as it was sort of the soundtrack to a very difficult part of my life. There are lines like this scattered all throughout this album.

That's a great suggestion, I'm sure it would pick up their spirits, just like it does for most of us. I base that opinion on the rating for the song. I'm sure if they pumped RP into the PA system of an old folks home it would be great for the seniors and the staff. {#Biggrin}

This took a while to grow on me... but now I think this song is freaking fantastic!!!!
Although he wasn't involved with this Wilco album, I still feel it necessary to report on the sad passing of early and influential band member Jay Bennett over the Memorial Day weekend. Rest in peace, Jay.

RIP Jay Bennet
I guess this is a song, that should be appreciated for it's merits: quirky, non-commercial, total non sellout, creative, nice musicianship....ok here is your well deserved....5  {#Yawn}

This is a song for people in the old folks home.
This can't be the same Wilco who does that rockin' Casino Queen.  Can it?
Wilco equals blah.
ahhhh - Bill always knows how to make things better - very nice song to follow with after that painful "Waterboys - Old England" thing.

Nice segue from Graham Nash's Simple Man!
The repetitiveness of your comments is more boring than the song.  C'mon Ex, I think you're funny on other pages, but this song is about as objectionable as the Dead's "Ripple."  In fact, your "boring" comment is betrayed by the fact that the song impels you to comment repeatedly.  Looks like it actually stirs you somewhat.

And here it comes again.  Looks like it's naptime.  {#Yawn}

While I am a last-minute Wilco fan, I saw them live 2 days ago @ tanglewood, and the show was amazing. 2 hours and 15 minutes of pure entertainment delivered by talented musicians. Very cool concert.

I have heard this one a lot too, but only because I liked it enough to download it and put it on a mix CD.  I would probably like it more if I didn't hear it so often.
Absolutely LOVE Wilco. Gave this a song an 8, but need to give this a break. It sounds like 100 different commercials at this point. And this song is not even close to being in the top 20 Wilco songs in their catalog in my opinion.

I would also like to second that sentiment. By the way, I find this to be one of the most relaxing songs! I found out the hard way when my radio alarm went off one morning with this song playing at the time...I was late. Straight to my iPod "sleep" playlist.

The album as a whole seemed pretty dreary to me and I wasn't loving it at first. That said, I am never disappointed to hear any Wilco song, ever.

Gentle suggestion: rip every cd you have, and then when a new one arrives, rip it too, just for safe keeping, and play only copies or MP3s. And upload good cuts to RP!

They werent shy getting their music out there in commercials. Cant hold it against them considering the state of radio.
I haven't picked this album up yet, but what I've heard thus far is really quite wonderful IMHO. I see lots of posts with regards to the widespread dislike/lack of appreciation of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. It's just an opinion...but I firmly believe that in twenty years Y.H.F. will be regarded as one of the most ambitious and vital albums of this generation...and may be discussed in the same coversation as Pet Sounds, or Revolver, or Dark Side...or who knows, perhaps The Bends, or Sea Change, or Nothing's Shocking, or Pretty Hate Machine...or _______________. Tomorrow never knows, indeed.
weirsh wrote:
Wanna hear some good Wilco? Pick up AM - Tweedy was still doing it right back then.
Any outfit that sticks around for awhile and is worth its salt will undergo some transition in its sound. Not always for the better, mind you, but still necessary for growth. Stagnancy ain't good for anyone. Great artists know when they've peaked, have nothing new of note to say, and call it quits. Wilco have proven that they have much more to express, and have evolved quite nicely, IMO. Full circle-like? Dunno, but I agree with those who cite maturity in the compositions.
weirsh wrote:

I don't think there are too many Wilco fans (if any) who would agree with this assesment. A.M. has some fun tunes but it was a transitional album Tweedy cranked out to get something out quickly after Uncle Tupelo folded. Aside from its raw qualities I don't think there is anything particularly noteworthy about it aside from what it lead to. Any fan who argues that a band's first album is their best is usually: a) wrong b) clinging to the past IMHO Such fans always make me think of this great exchange between John Lennon and Gloria Emerson which can seen in IMAGINE: GLORIA EMERSON: I'm somebody who admired you very much..... JOHN LENNON: Well I'm sorry if you liked the old moptops dear and you thought I was very satirical and witty and you like Hard days' night love...... EMERSON: I'm talking about cashing in on the Beatles. LENNON: .......but I've grown up but you obviously haven't. EMERSON: Have you? LENNON: Yes folks. This is Wilco grown up. And it's quite great.
Just played Yankee Hotel Foxtrot the other day, having not heard it for a long time, and I really think the Sky Blue Sky album is noticeably more mature. Lovely piece of work, IMO.
*yawn*

Both A.M. and Being There reflect Tweedy's roots in Uncle Tupelo and the country alt sound that they helped to create if not amplify. Their later albums do move away from that sound, especially Summerteeth, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and A Ghost is Born. But Sky Blue Sky comes a little closer to the early, formative years that were the original signature for this band. It's not often that a band regresses/progresses back to their former self. Give Wilco and Tweedy credit for picking their roots and bringing that back to the forefront while still retaining their new more experimental sound. A very progressive, alt country band that still inspires and surprises. The essence of a band that I look forward to again and again.

I disagree... I'm not too familiar with Wilco, basically just the music I've been exposed to through RP, and I must say I enjoy this tune... a real foot tapper
