Good day, sunshine
Good day, sunshine
Good day, sunshine
I need to laugh
And when the sun is out
I've got something I can laugh about
I feel good
In a special way
I'm in love and it's a sunny day
Good day, sunshine
Good day, sunshine
Good day, sunshine
We take a walk
The sun is shining down
Burns my feet as they touch the ground
Good day, sunshine
Good day, sunshine
Good day, sunshine
Then we lie
Beneath the shady tree
I love her and she's loving me
She feels good (she does)
She knows she's looking fine
I'm so proud to know that she is mine
Good day, sunshine
Good day, sunshine
Good day, sunshine

I like this tune (and certainly do not need it in order to survive) but I can understand why it wouldn't rate as high as other Beatles' tunes. To a lot of folks, this is one of McCartney's "ditties" - or as Lennon called them "granny tunes". This song doesn't sound unlike a a song one would hear on a children's television program. Really listen to this song objectively, as if for the first time, and try to imagine many people would like this if it were done by anyone other than The Beatles?
It is really hard, maybe impossible, for someone who grew up in the '60s to listen to this song objectively. I love this song in all its dittiness, maybe because of the context of my life at the time it came out, but so what? It's still great to me.

Really listen to this song objectively, as if for the first time, and figure how many people would like this if it were done by anyone other than The Beatles?
Might not like if done by someone other that the Beatles, but that's the point there were so damn good they could take a "granny" tune and deliver it. They would get the harmonies right, figure out where the hooks were and deliver it. Other bands would likely suck doing this and I wouldn't be interested. That was the magic of the Beatles. Though actually this is one of my favorites especially on a nice bright sunny morning or to get the feeling that I am waking up to one.

As young kids we (my brothers (two) and sister) loved to sing along with all the Beatles albums we owned. I thought I had a good voice, but little did I know (but everybody else did), my voice was changing (more like cracking). One day I was singing along to "Good Day Sunshine" and recording it at the same time. Little did I know but my mother took the tape with my singing on it, recorded a long letter to her brother who was serving in Vietnam and sent it to him. I was absolutely mortified! But the way I look at it, I must have been a great morale booster to all of the men and women who were serving over there. I swear I could hear the laughter all the way back in the states!
It took me almost a millisecond to 10 this one, I am getting slow!
Was never my favourite BEATLES song - right now I find it to an a "9"...

As someone who has played MANY a Beatle song, I agree with you. VERY complex songs, not easily learned.
People who aren't musicians shouldn't judge whether something is easy or hard to play. They haven't a clue.

There should be no more than 1 or 2 songs on any of the Beatles LP's that rate lower than an 8—this isn't one of them. As overplayed as they are, they set the bar.

To even put The Beatles who had the extremely talented singer song writers John Lennon and Paul McCartney in the same categories as Kiss and Queen is so ridiculous and laughable! I never liked Queen,or Kiss and most rock critics don't either but most like and rightfully praise The Beatles! And Madonna is just a singer and performer not a song composer, and Elvis was too,he never wrote one note of music,he just had a very good voice and was a very good singer!

Still, this is a good song.
No other music group wrote as much great quality diverse music and was so creative and innovative in just a short 7 year recording career! And that is why The Beatles are rightfully so highly regarded and why most people, many rock critics and other well known musicians say as even Ozzy Osbourne says,Were The Greatest Band To Ever Walk The Earth! They can't be overrated except by ignoramuses, but they can be underrrated by them too! It's pretty much like saying Beethoven was overrrated too! And I'm sure there are some ignorant people who say this too!

Don't know if it makes a difference in your point (which I agree with - that the Beatles were more risque than folks suppose) but it really affects your credibility...
I have *plenty* of Beatles knowledge credibility! The point is the reference in Penny Lane about fish and finger pies is a sexual British slang! Look this up on wikipedia the online encyclopedia and it says this although I knew this since at age 13 I read the great and only authorized Beatles biography called The Beatles by Hunter Davies.

Paul had enormous value in the Beatles. It could even be argued that in the second half he was the most important member. Do you not like the songs that Paul wrote? Many great songs from the Beatles' albums - in particular, from Sgt. Pepper forward - were Paul's. As an example, most of the good songs on Let It Be were his. Oh, and Sgt. Pepper was his idea....
Paul was/is extremeley talented and integral to what the Beatles were but in the latter half it could be argued he was certainly the corniest of the four. And his love for smaltz weighed the group down. One could understand the frustration the other's felt as inordinate time went into recording idiotic Paul tunes like "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" while John was begging for someone to help put some time into recording the masterpiece "Across the Universe"

They also wrote songs that were not innocent at all,but they had to disguise some of the messages because in those days you would be banned off of the air. Paul McCartney's song Why Don't We Do it in The Road on The White album is one of the most perverted songs there is about having public sex in a road! Even a seemingly "innocent" sounding song like Penny Lane had obscene references in it,the line about full of fish and finger pie was an obscene term young men in England used to refer to young women.
Also,John's great song Girl on Rubber Soul has Paul and George singing the word t*t over and over real fast in the backround, and Day Tripper from October 1965 is about sex and drugs with the lines she's a big teaser which Paul says was supposed to be she's a pr**k teaser.A Day in The Life has the drug message I'd Love To Turn You On and it was banned off of the BBC because of this. its interesting how poorly the beatles music ages. it is so terribly dated now. when you revisit the kinks, the who, the stones, all of a similar era, all regarded to be less artistic back then, they sound alot less dated.
Yes,The Beatles music has "dated" so poorly that's why it's THE BEATLES WHO JUST RECENTLY ARE THE NUMBER 1 SELLING MUSIC ARTISTS in THE AMAZON.com HALL OF FAME U2 ARE NUMBER 2,AND THE ROLLING STONES ARE ONLY NUMBER 10! But these groups are still together The Beatles broke up in 1970 and this summer they were also given a diamond award from The Recording Industry Association Of America for having some of the biggest selling albums of all time!Their Anthology CD's went to # 1 as soon as they came out *25* years after they broke up and a radio DJ said that 40% were teenagers buying them, their CD 1 also went to # 1 all over the world as soon as it came out *31* years after they broke up and 30% of teenagers bought this!
I just read a great review on Amazon.com for their CD 1 by a 16 year old big Beatles fan who titled their review,Brought a Whole New Generation To Beatlemania and said they have been a big Beatles fan after hearing this CD at the age of 11 and that they know a lot of young people who like them and their popularity lives on! I also read a recent review on Amazon.com UK by a music fan who titled their review,OMG obviously meaning Oh My G*D and they said,"I'm a Hip-Hop fan,I hate all other types of music except for the occasional exception, this is one! It is amazing from beginning to end,I recommend this album to everyone in the world, even deaf people it's that good, just magic."
On a web site called,Rock On The Net in The Beatles biography it says, few could argue that one of the best if not the best groups in rock history is The Beatles! On the Ottawa Beatles site in a section called,The Beatles Timeline,it says what the objectives of the Timeline is and it says,For Those Familiar With The Band And It's History,This Will Definitely Be A Fun "Refresher" Course. And To Those Of You Who Have Recently Discovered An Appreciation Of Why Beatles Fans,Music Lovers,And Historians All Agree That The Beatles Were The Greatest Rock 'n' Roll Band To Emerge Out Of The Twentieth Century.
That's why on Paul McCartney.com there are tons of Paul/Beatles fans from all over the world from teenagers to their 50's! That's why on many music review and Beatles fan sites, there are many teenage and college age fans! That's why music professors at at least 6 good universities are teaching courses on The Beatles great music! One of them is award winning music professor and classical composer Dr.Glen Gass at Indiania University and he's been teaching a course on rock music since 1982. It says on his web site for his Beatles course that he teaches about this extraordinary group and song writing partnership. It also says the main purpose of this course is to get students to have a better appreciation for The Beatles remarkable recordings! Dr.Gass told me he knows a lot of 20 year olds who really love The Beatles music! He said they are like the best of anything like Beethoven they will always be loved and popular! Dr.Gary Kendall's Beatles course is the most requested course at North Western University!
There are at least 7 recent online polls on different web sites that are not Beatles fan sites that have The Beatles vs The Rolling Stones. One site is called,The Best and Worst.com,another is called Rotten Tomatoes, and another is The Mister Poll and I found a recent one from a site in Australia and The Beatles won in *EVERY* poll! ALL OF THIS IS BECAUSE THE BEATLES MUSIC IS GREAT TIMELESS MUSIC! Plus the song you claim them being poorly dated comes from an album that most music fans and critics still say is the greatest album ever made Revolver!
There is an online interview with Jane's Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro and he's quoted in Guitar World from 1991 and 1996 saying it surprises and shocks people that I have always hated The Rolling Stones and he says he always will! There is also an online interview with guitarist Frank Marino of the hard rock group Mahogany Rush and he says he can't stand The Rolling Stones and calls them the worst hoax ever! He says a lot of people are suckers for The Rolling Stones! In several recent online interviews he says he likes and listens to The Beatles,Jimi Hendrix,The Doors and The Allman Brothers Band!
I see you like U2,well Bono is a big Beatles fan also and he said when he listened to Paul McCartney's Wingspan Hits and History he was in awe of the musical diversity. Bono along with Pete Townsend is also one of many John Lennon friends and admirers in the new tribute book,Memories Of John coming out in November.Bob Dylan was also recently quoted in Mojo Magazine saying "I still miss The Beatles".
The Rolling Stones were also friends and fans of The Beatles and Mick Jagger was at 4 Beatles recording sessions and Keith Richards was at 2 of them with him.John Lennon and Paul MCcartney wrote The Rolling Stones first real hit song,I Wanna Be You're Man in early 1964. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were also in the audience at The Beatles historic August 1965 Shea Stadium concert which was the biggest rock concert at the time with 65,000 people there. Bob Dylan was also a friend and fan and he visited The Beatles in their hotel room later that night. Ozzy Osbourne says not loving The Beatles is like saying you don't love oxogen and he says they are the greatest band to ever walk the earth and The Rolling Stone Album Guide says not liking The Beatles is as perverse as not liking the sun!
No it really must be Rolling Stones songs like Lady Jane,As Tears Go By,We Love You,Ruby Tuesday, Angie etc that sound poorly dated!
its interesting how poorly the beatles music ages. it is so terribly dated now. when you revisit the kinks, the who, the stones, all of a similar era, all regarded to be less artistic back then, they sound alot less dated.

BRAVO! A happy song thrown in there is OK, of course being an avid Beatles fan....what can I say? (yep, we need more of that) :sunny.gif:
I wanna pick daisies.

I think what berko meant was that it is not antique, it is Classic. No?
The bell tower of the university I work for plays this and "Here comes the sun" during the summer, among other songs. Always makes my day, as did this. :sunny.gif:
This song makes me feel good every time I hear it. Of course I'm a TOTAL Beatles freak.

I think that "sweet" feeling makes the music that much more special in this time of lost innocence.

Perfect Friday song.
One of my favorite HAPPY DAY songs! Nice keyboard work, too. MY definition of the "best" Beatles is from Rubber Soul forward. Nothing wrong with the early work, but....
I sing this loudly on the first sunny warm day of the year.
I just can't help myself
Always uplifting. And Revolver never gets the credit it should. Really, a precursor of what was to come -- Sgt. Peppers.

this song takes me back to when i first fell in love with it. i was a senior in high school and my friend megan and i had nothing to do one day, so we took a drive in her mom's car up the winding roads of sewickley heights singing it at the top of our lungs - in harmony - on a very sunny, gorgeous fall day. it will always make me think of her as long as i live. :)
Cool story. Thanks for sharing the memory.
