Then I would not've found you
Angel flying too close to the ground
And I patched up your broken wing
And hung around awhile
Trying to keep your spirits up
And your fever down
I knew someday you would fly away
For love's the greatest healer to be found
So leave me if you need to
I will still remember
Angel flying too close to the ground
Fly on, fly on past the speed of sound
I'd rather see you up than see you down
So leave me if you need to
I will still remember
Angel flying too close to the ground
Leave me if you need to
I will still remember
Angel flying too close to the ground
This song is why I love Radio Paradise.
This song is one of the reasons I love Willie Nelson
Make this noise stop please...
You first...
Thanks Bill....
Willie is a National Treasure. Angel flying too close to the ground.... Seven Spanish Angels.... Poncho and Lefty - are some of the finest songs ever.
Don't forget Blue Eyes Cryin in the Rain, and the whole Red-Headed Stranger Album!
Trigger is the Martin N-20 nylon-string classical acoustic guitar used by country music singer-songwriter Willie Nelson.
What is the secret X factor, that allows someone with as little raw talent as a singer at least, for all of us to really enjoy listening to him, and others lacking skills as well.
There are many other singers that are "untalented" in some way, such as Leonard Cohen, (later in life), Frank Sinatra , John Waite, Louis Armstrong. (Some like Sinatra took many decades for me to like, evidently as BillG did as well. )
There's really is a passion that comes through from most all the greats, that makes up for their lack of raw talent. Conversely, many great singers can't cut it, and are too boring for anyone to care to listen to.
Thoughts?
Willie's phrasing, in this case. All you mentioned are so unique that they stand out.
Willie has only used him for harmonica.
Willie Nelson is a treasure!
You bet your ass he is..

Give's his heart to many,
his soul to all we know
He'll sing through
Infinity, those two,
Willie and Tigger
a perfect show

Liz... agreed. Linda Thomson once said that Willie didn't have the best set of pipes.. but man can he sing a song !
That would be for Bo Diddley, he's down the hall and to the left.
Some artists just keep on surprising me.
This song reminds my of my daughter...lost in a bitter divorce, we haven't spoken in many, many years.
I'm going+1 to 9 in hopes that extra positivity helps your daughter situation; good vibes or something like that.
Long Live RP and remembering it's never too late until it is!!
Wow! Love hearing Willie on RP. Bill, I notice you've got 14 Willie songs in your library, another 22 by Johnny Cash, and 2 from Merle Haggard. I'm guessing they don't get much play here (other than Johnny Cash), but I encourage you to bring 'em out of the shadows. Let's hear a few more classics from these great artists from time to time. LLRP.
I get goosebumps when I hear Willie Nelson sing!
Loving his son Lukas' stuff too.
I think RP's eclecticism broadens your appreciation of whatever follows any piece.
Thanks, Bill & Rebecca, for opening my ears to new-old treasures.
I think your ears are plugged, have you a good doctor to get them checked?
Must be gettin' old.
Another quantum job for me - both a 1 and a 10 at the same time.
Thanks Willie,
Love Louie
Pigtails not a ponytail.
you should tell her this
truest words!
I x-rayed Willie's mother at Brackenridge Hospital, sometime around 1976. Willie was waiting out in the hall. If I'd known he was going to get so famous, I would have asked for an autograph.
Well that right there tells you what a class act he is....taking his mom to the hospital and all....good for him....sorry you didn't get the autograph though I bet you enjoy the story more than a signature....this one's an 8 to me....Long Live RP!!
And if I were to edit his Wiki article, it'd be something like this:
Occupation: Singer, songwriter, musician, actor, producer, author, poet, activist, Pot Smoker!
but I like Willie. This song is just fine.
I love Dylan too, but he had nothing to do with this song, you idiot!
Dylan did cover this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2exDYfESFAM

Music is amazing this way.
I agree, I enjoy his voice and the unique sound of his nylon string guitar.

It’s not about the technique, but the emotion behind it.

I would disagree. The guitar playing is proper for a ballad such as this. His voice works here (it often doesn't). This is a classic and deserves much more than a 6.6 rating.
And this from a critic who dislikes the vast majority of country music.
This song reminds my of my daughter...lost in a bitter divorce, we haven't spoken in many, many years.
you should tell her this
but man is he hot in this picture

Hear, hear!

I also spent the majority of my day riding skateboards down the rocky driveway with her son... haha

Read the lyrics, listen to the Music....
... This song will be played and covered long after we all are dust in the wind - "here tomorrow gone today" - segway to Bruce Cockburn?

so true, Michael... we saw him at the Greek Theatre a few weeks ago, and while I was expecting that they just kinda propped him up and he picked a little and sang a little, it was just the opposite. He sang for about 90 minutes, was the ONLY guitar on stage, and commanded the performance through an astounding repertoire of music. To hear him interpret other modern songs, such as The Muppets' "Rainbow Connection" or Pearl Jam's "Just Breathe," is a revelation.
I saw him a couple years ago at The Backyard. From the first notes of Whiskey River, his performance was like 'the rest of you on stage, try to keep up with me'. At the rate he's going he'll outlive all of us.
One of his daughters, Amy Nelson, is in a very fun little band called 'Folk Uke'. They were on before Willie and Paula. Very funny and talented. A particularly memorable ditty of theirs is '$hit Makes the Flowers Grow'.
I feel like I should be in some smoky bar in some dusty cow town in order to listen to this.
It would also help to be really trashed.
It always strikes me as interesting that so much effort is spent talking about his politics or his pot-smoking, when what is really significant about Willie Nelson is that nobody sings, plays guitar, or interprets songs like him. Not even close. His guitar playing, in particular, is totally distinctive, and only a small part of that is his distinctive choice of equipment. It is utterly non-conformist and completely matches his personality and his delivery.

But no worries Radio Paradise still rocks !!!
I love this song, but that comment really cracks me up.
Willie is an amazing songwriter.
Some young guy behind us wondered aloud what song he would play first. Noob.
And he loves and cares for his family and manufactures his own private brand of biodiesel.
Hats off, folks. You're in the presence of greatness.
Right On toterola! (I'm gonna guzzle down some Lone Star and cheer this fab comment, Cheers!)
Willie is an American musical treasure!
and I am Canadian :-)
my new fav song of his book...
This is the kind of inspired programming that keeps me right here with RP. Thanks, Bill.
yes, perfect...
it was 81 or 82 New Years in the dome. my first year in Texas and my friend recorded it.
I was there! somewhere in the nosebleed section. I was NOT the desperate girl who walked into the men's & got arrested when she exited. There is no one like Willie.

"Ah couldn't possibly comment."
"House of Cards", y'all, on Netflix. Dark but gripping and compelling. Not Willie's kind of place.
Eddie spent a lot of hard earned cash perfecting that look. True dat.
