Underneath the sky where the cold winds cross
Theres an ocean where data flows
Womam in a boat out on the sea
A sea of little bits of you and me
Let it all go set it all free
You let the whole wide world see
Exactly what is going on
Exactly who was looking on
Theres no safe place to go
Now youve let that whistle blow
Show Exactly what is going on
Show Exactly who was looking on
Stories start to leak they color your name
While up above cloud turns to rain
You can feel the touch of a hand you know well
Its a very long way from Maryland
Let it all go
Set it all free
You let the whole wide world see
Exactly what is going on
Exactly who was looking on
Theres no safe place to go
Now you've let that whistle blow
Show exactly what is going on
Show exactly who was looking on
Some say youre a patriot
Some call you a sile
An American hero
Or a traitor that deserves to die
In the heart of the free world
In the home of the brave
You gave up everything
To bring down the veil
Let it all go set it all free
You let the whole wide world see
Exactly what is going on
Exactly who was looking on
Theres no safe place to go
Now youve let that whistle blow
Show exactly what is going on
Show exactly who was looking on
Let it all go
Set it free

Set it free

You were probably overdue for your Fox News fix anyway.
Do you go through life presuming to know so much about someone based on one sentence said in jest? Good luck with that.

He divulged information to a foreign government after signing a contract with a fairly specific sent of conditions. I don't really care what you call it, but is was dishonest, without integrity and dishonorable. Label it how you will.
Also, he supposedly had MUCH more sensitive information than just the NSA storing our metadata.

It's just so... earnest.

Jesus, "Peter Gabriel...Edward Snowden...Oliver Stone." I just chuckled and immediately changed the station.

It is rather amazing that the information he provided (leaked) never had anything to do with the Russian intelligence organizations. Don't you think that the NSA would have maintained information on that? Or was his data dump truly just western based. There appears to be something missing. Even FRANTS KLINTSEVICH (the equivalent of a senator in Russia and deputy chairman of the powerful defense and security committee) said at a press conference: "Let's be frank," he says. "Snowden did share intelligence. This is what security services do," adds Klintsevich. "If there's a possibility to get information, they will get it." But hey, he is a Russian government official, so I guess we cannot trust him to be truthful. We can only trust the guy who took the information (and his lawyers) to ever be truthful. He exposed programs that have existed in one way or another for years, from every intelligence agency in the world. Every. Intelligence. Agency. But then again, only the American (and UK) governments are bad. I know its true because Snowden tweeted about it.
You don't have to be brilliant to see that Snowden gave intelligence to Russia in return for safety. But in the same time he did not have a lot of choice. What should he have done? Go to prison in the USA and die a few years later of 'suicide'? Or go to Europe where he would have 'raped' a few women and ended up in some embassy? If you treat whistleblowers like criminals...
It's still unheard that the NSA bugged friendly foreign nations upto the presidents and prime ministers. I always wondered why Merkel reacted like she was mildly not amused. Wars are started for less.
For me it was a valuable lesson that our friendly USA is treating almost every country like shit if it comes to privacy on every aspect. I for sure decreased my activity on the internet even more.

Yep. It's a universal truth of States, even those purportedly 'democratic', that laws are for the ruled and do not apply to the rulers. States create and enforce laws to bolster and enhance their own powers - 'democracy' is a necessary fiction to (literally) legitimise this, to ensure public support. As the old saying goes: do as I say, not as I do. Or, looking at the UK government, which has played fast and loose with the law in my living memory (50-odd years), Britannia waives the rules.
Still, those of youse who reckon Snowden's a traitor and should be hanged will likely get your wish when Hamsterhead and Putin agree to sacrifice the four-eyed one to their realpolitik détente.
A shame about the song being such a dire dirge, though I suspect that it's better in the context of the film.
apparently it is illegal to expose the government's illegalities

soviet defector - how's that work?
spy - debatable since others would say he's exposed illegal spying activity by US and UK govts

Agreed. I still think his Opus work is Last Temptation of Christ soundtrack....
From the standpoint of a decades-long fan, I feel like he needs to get back to rock 'n roll! He's all mellow in his old age, just keeps re-packaging his old stuff. This, of course, is an exception, but it is a single for a movie that I don't think is all that great. Listen to ANY song on "So." He used to put out such awesome stuff. He hasn't put together anything really remarkable since Us!

It's true. That cover album was depressingly poor.

So I've been obsessing about freedom of information since the founding of the Electronic Freedom Foundation... does anybody see that this is a thing?
not among my fave PG songs...eager for this to end

Peter G has done much better. For me this is a trite letdown.

True; he is a traitor and spy. And I am a little disappointed that PG jumped on the bandwagon. Oh, and I've been a liberal/progressive etc. for 50 years.
So, a song about Snowden. Geez, never thought a soviet defector (and spy) would be so glorified within the west. Oh well, let's keep dancing towards the abyss...at least the music is good.

A whistle blower goes to the press a spy goes to Russia, pretty clear to me.

Kinda literal, no? I expected more lyrically, but I love the soundscape.

Great, after many years without inspiration, Peter seems to be back! Great news!
