While the eyes of the idol with the iron head are glowing.
Distant ships sailing into the mist,
You were born with a snake in both of your fists while a hurricane was blowing.
Freedom just around the corner for you
But with truth so far off, what good will it do?
Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune,
Bird fly high by the light of the moon,
Oh, oh, oh, Jokerman.
So swiftly the sun sets in the sky,
You rise up and say goodbye to no one.
Fools rush in where angels fear to tread,
Both of their futures, so full of dread, you don't show one.
Shedding off one more layer of skin,
Keeping one step ahead of the persecutor within.
Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune,
Bird fly high by the light of the moon,
Oh, oh, oh, Jokerman.
You're a man of the mountains, you can walk on the clouds,
Manipulator of crowds, you're a dream twister.
You're going to Sodom and Gomorrah
But what do you care? Ain't nobody there would want to marry your sister.
Friend to the martyr, a friend to the woman of shame,
You look into the fiery furnace, see the rich man without any name.
Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune,
Bird fly high by the light of the moon,
Oh, oh, oh, Jokerman.
Well, the Book of Leviticus and Deuteronomy,
The law of the jungle and the sea are your only teachers.
In the smoke of the twilight on a milk-white steed,
Michelangelo indeed could've carved out your features.
Resting in the fields, far from the turbulent space,
Half asleep neath the stars with a small dog licking your face.
Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune,
Bird fly high by the light of the moon,
Oh. oh. oh. Jokerman.
Well, the rifleman's stalking the sick and the lame,
Preacherman seeks the same, who'll get there first is uncertain.
Nightsticks and water cannons, tear gas, padlocks,
Molotov cocktails and rocks behind every curtain,
False-hearted judges dying in the webs that they spin,
Only a matter of time 'til night comes steppin' in.
Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune,
Bird fly high by the light of the moon,
Oh, oh, oh, Jokerman.
It's a shadowy world, skies are slippery gray,
A woman just gave birth to a prince today and dressed him in scarlet.
He'll put the priest in his pocket, put the blade to the heat,
Take the motherless children off the street
And place them at the feet of a harlot.
Oh, Jokerman, you know what he wants,
Oh, Jokerman, you don't show any response.
Jokerman dance to the nightingale tune,
Bird fly high by the light of the moon,
Oh, oh, oh, Jokerman.
Thanks, BillG & Rebecca, for that feature on RP.

And Bob...why don't you play this song at shows? By gosh...it's a keeper.

Thanks for posting. Proves once again what everyone knows. Dylan is the master of storytelling and lyrics. And I happen to love his harmonica and voice. There are times I'll listen to 2 or 3 albums straight through, particularly his first eight, in one sitting!!

Haha, I get it now...you're talking about THIS song in particular. Yeah, it does drag a bit to the end..

Bob Dylan's influence on popular music is incalculable. As a songwriter, he pioneered several different schools of pop songwriting, from confessional singer/songwriter to winding, hallucinatory, stream-of-consciousness narratives. As a vocalist, he broke down the notion that a singer must have a conventionally good voice in order to perform, thereby redefining the vocalist's role in popular music. As a musician, he sparked several genres of pop music, including electrified folk-rock and country-rock. And that just touches on the tip of his achievements. Dylan's force was evident during his height of popularity in the '60s — the Beatles' shift toward introspective songwriting in the mid-'60s never would have happened without him — but his influence echoed throughout several subsequent generations, as many of his songs became popular standards and his best albums became undisputed classics of the rock & roll canon. Dylan's influence throughout folk music was equally powerful, and he marks a pivotal turning point in its 20th century evolution, signifying when the genre moved away from traditional songs and toward personal songwriting. Even when his sales declined in the '80s and '90s, Dylan's presence rarely lagged, and his commercial revival in the 2000s proved his staying power.

Thank you SO much, Mr. Bond, for posting these lyrics. They remind me of why I suffer through Dylan's singing and harmonica-playing. His words are absolutely brilliant, and are worth whatever it takes to get past his vocals. In fact, somehow, his voice adds something poignant and meaningful to whatever he writes. Damn - I'm gonna have to re-invest in some Dylan stuff now. (Thank you SO much, Mr. Bond, for making me realize I'm going to spend money I don't have.)

Yes, I know....fantastic song!!
LOL! I used the time to re-boot the machine after an update to some software was installed. I was holding it for a while due to the sequence of pretty good tracks that preceded this one
An easy 8-9
Brutal, you forgot to say, and Long
Agree with the 9
That's hilarious; I just said to my coworkers, "This is really bad", then I logged in to post it, and you beat me to it!
Yes, I know....fantastic song!!
I feel exactly the same way! Only I gave it an 8.Great song!

This song is soooo good for the ears...
Indeed.
I know I sure do! This is one of those songs that stays in yer head for at least a week after hearing it, but that's ok wit me!

Dylan's last 3 albums have been excellent. I like "Modern Times," but
all his work as of late is very good. Rock on Mr. Z
More proof that he's a brilliant writer who should not be allowed to sing within 100 feet of a recording device, for the good of humanity.
Neighbiorhood Bully a quintessential achievement.
omg; Have heard this song countless times without knowing it is Knopfler !!
exactly my thoughts.
Never knew he collaborated with Knopfler, though. Thanks to be previous commenter for confirming that was MK's guitar (though, truthfully, there was never any doubt in my mind...).
