RP comments on this are 20 years old now. I think its stood the test of time.
Although my internal clock knows the timing, the sound here is relatively timeless. My kids would not have any idea this is nearly 30 years old now.

U2 is one of the rock bands that I actually know all of the band member's names. Aren't too many other bands nowadays - maybe none - that I can name all the members. I wonder why? Maybe they are one of those bands where I studied the album liner notes back in the day.

Honestly, I wasn't a big fan of U2 when they first broke...I didn't really start liking them until Achtung Baby, when I felt they stopped trying to be "important" and just made cathy pop tunes. Which is I think the opposite of what happened to the OG fans.

I could have sworn RP played this yesterday. No matter - it's a fine tune. Doesn't always work for U2 playing music which doesn't have their house sound, but this works well. When Love Comes To Town and Love Rescue me do not work at all. At least U2 have managed to avoid the fatal error of a white band playing anything with a reggae twist....in the studio that is.

This has to be one of the best U2 songs in my opinion.

How do you think these corrupt leaders rose to power? Were they educated by Western colonizers? Did they cut a deal with a multinational corporation to trade mineral/fossil fuel rights for power? Were they the leader of a political/military power who's opposition to communism made Western powers overlook their horrible human rights abuses? Or, were they elected freely only to go on and solidify power/change their countries constitution/eliminate their rivals? Did they leverage their country's few resources to the World Bank in exchange for loans they could never afford to pay back?
The reason why countries stay poor is because its far more expedient for richer, more powerful nations to subjugate less powerful and underdeveloped nations. It galls me to rate U2 this high - most of their output flat out bores me - but this seems like a solid 8. This slinky, sexy groove still sounds fresh and exciting all these years later.
Re St. Bono's political activism.
I like the music, and do not agree with the content of his activism but would invite those of you who oppose to at least understand it.
Bono believes that western countries owe poor, developing countries much assistance. He apparently believes that large amounts of gifted aid will help. it makes perfect sense for him to hob nob because countries like the USA and Great Britain because these states have access to the biggest pools of resources.
Bono is not leading a fight against the contemporary ethnic cleansing or vestiges of western violent colonialism.

I like em both, have most of their albums, but listen to them rarely. Why? Hell if I know. Groovin on Porcupine Tree at the moment.
Next moment, something else.
But I still keep it all in perspective.
It's all good.
And some is great.
A decent followup to the Joshua Tree tunes.
Has any band ever produced anything better after such a stellar album?

Its been long enough since I last heard this that I can really appreciate it now as simply great iconic U2.

All these arguments about music here being too 'mainstream' would dissolve away if people just didn't listen to so much popular music on the radio. I think that's why I can keep coming back to this album and others (good example: Any Zeppelin), I watch my intake of Popular Culture(TM). Too much and it all starts to seem stale. I was in the Peace Corp in Africa when this came out. Someone got hold of the tape. We rocked the grass hut hard to this Album, Stomped some serious Dung floor! Still works for me.

I like that they can mix some obscure tunes I've not been exposed to with some favorites. No one else has the b***s to do that. Honestly, I've bashed later U2 as many times as most U2 haters on this little paradise of ours. But this album and the Joshua Tree are timeless masterpieces.
One of the most powerful bass tracks in modern music.

Agreed. This isn't an indie station. And there's nothing wrong with this song. Just because you've heard it on mainstream radio doesn't mean it doesn't belong here.
The difference between RP and others is that RP will go out there and do sets like those songs. I, for one, enjoy hearing classics every now and then, as well as being exposed to stuff I've no knowledge of.
And for the record, I've rated this song a 6, and you don't see me complaining. :)

I like U2. I like this song. I can hear it on any radio station across the country. I am sure one of my local stations is playing it right now. That is why I listen to RP.

It's tough call, indeed. Achtung Baby is more varied and has more and IMO better Edge guitar solos. The Joshua Tree has better songs, though.

These guys are each in their own right amazingly gifted and creative artists who put 100% of everything into everything.
Single out the bass, it rocks like the bed of all grooves.
The guitar is interacting with it like a live thing.
The awesome Celtic drums are often completely overlooked.

U2 seems to be SOOO overplayed and burned out now-a-days, but this song and album in general is still excellent. My enjoyment of U2 has successively dropped off as each of their new album since Achtung Baby has been released.
