Hans plays with Lotte, Lotte plays with Jane
Jane plays with Willi, Willi is happy again
Suki plays with Leo, Sacha plays with Britt
Adolf builds a bonfire, Enrico plays with it
-Whistling tunes we hid in the dunes by the seaside
-Whistling tunes we're kissing baboons in the jungle
It's a knockout
If looks could kill, they probably will
In games without frontiers-war without tears
Games without frontiers-war without tears
Jeux sans frontieres
Andre has a red flag, Chiang Ching's is blue
They all have hills to fly them on except for Lin Tai Yu
Dressing up in costumes, playing silly games
Hiding out in tree-tops shouting out rude names
-Whistling tunes we hide in the dunes by the seaside
-Whistling tunes we're kissing baboons in the jungle
It's a knockout
If looks could kill they probably will
In games without frontiers-wars without tears

I like this version - the vox are more forefront.

It's probably a reference to an old french tv show, and the idea of competing in a non-military method, like the Olympics, very much a war without violence (if not without tears). Yes I know this comment is from 6-7 years ago, but the wiki page is interesting.
Also, why "war without tears"? Why not just not have war at all, rather than a less sad kind?

Me too... wouldn't mind getting Peter Gabriel too however. Maybe after?
Got Tracy Chapman too. Glad I did.
i PSD'd here and expecting PG, I got Tracey Chapman.
Um... I love this version. It was released on one of the "Steam" singles as "Games Without Frontiers (Massive/DB mix)".

Way too true!

Play Sledgehammer
I agree with everyone who's said this is a great tune, but this mix is evil.
remix? That's a new vocal. And this brings N O T H I N G to the original. Uninspired.

This guy's the height of pretentiousness.

If you think this is bad you shouldn't hear the remix of Genesis - The Carpet Crawlers where Gabriel tries to re-work a total classic and just murders it.
Much like this version of Games Without Frontiers"
I'm surprised by the negative responses to this version. OK, I'm a big Gabriel fan, but apart from that I think this is a great song, which gets a totally new dimension thanks to the balanced and well executed mix. But hey... it's just my taste getting the best of me.
Original scores 7.6
this mix 6.6
Need I say more - original only on RP.
This version blows.
No merci.
Decent at best. Much prefer the album cut or live version.
Am I the only one bugged by the fact that other than some Coldplay, we don't get much Brit-Rock, Brit-Soul, or Brit-Pop here in the Clear Channel dominated colonies. (i.e. Clear Channel controls a huge number of US radio stations and velveeta-eating program directors in San Antonio pick the same 17 songs to play over and over again) Other than KPRI in San Diego (and Radio Paradise) I cannot recall hearing Peter Gabriel or Massive Attack anywhere else in the US. One more reason to love radio paradise.
I'm a massive attack fan but....sorry.... really much better the original version! (one of my gabriel's favourites)
really enjoying this interpretation
Not so much a re-mix as it is a completely different version. Not a good one at that.

Uh oh, we're going to burn this one out too?
I thought the original was decent but can't really get into this one.
thanks for a new version...I can't listen to the original any more.
another overwrought peter gabriel tune...
Should have left this alone.
Get over with Massive Attack, not a good remix, un-remixable....
oh this version is pretty bad, and i love Peter gabriel
I agree with Paul. This version is good in that the lyrics are better understandable
I think the lyrics are emphasised in this version. "War without tears" is part of the goal of Jeux Sans Frontieres. If you havent seen JsF, its hard to understand the narrative in the song, but it is basically a series of very silly games which have the goal of encouraging European towns to compete with each other.
Throwing sponges soaked in water at a German fraulein who is balancing a two metre high milk churn on her head while trying to place footballs in a goal while walking on a greased mat with an elastic rope holding her back makes perfect sense when you consider what is one of the alternative forms of expression of national rivalry. "War without tears" indeed

Interesting blurb I read today that he and Hackett and Collins are OK with the idea of a reunion. Gabe says they would have to rehearse, which they didn't do for their little one-off live show back in the (?) 80s.
I think I would go to see that. It would have to be all the stuff they did together, though. The thought of seeing a live performance of 'Illegal Alien' makes my butt itch. If they did the whole Lamb though, WOW!
Can you imagine how far down the toilet this would've been if it were the original... instead of a megahit?
The original is so much better, but the remix isn't bad!
Good song, bad remix.
The remix was okay. A bit depressing tho.
I think this is actually much more interesting than the original. But I also think the original is pretty much a feel-good-about-yourself waste of air. So, it's all relative.

I don't agree, I see it more like a new variation, like taking the same colours again and look what you can paint this time with it
Very thoughtful reworking! He should get together with Kate Bush again I reckon.
Meh. Bland.
Two thumbs down.
Hey Peter, as long as you're re-working previous material, how 'bout re-working "Lamb" and "Foxtrot", and then performing them on tour with Genesis?!
(A guy can dream, can't he?)
BTW, the original was much better...8 1/2 to 6 1/2 for me, if "halves" were allowed.
Why? Did we do something wrong? We're sorry, we won't do it again...
At first I thought - how odd. Peter Gabriel is ripping himself off. Then I listened closer, and looked at "Now Playing". #-o
Not bad.
"Remixing a song is like admitting you were wrong."
Hmm...never heard this mix before. Pretty good!
I have to weigh in on the this version is better side. Massive Attack makes this track flow, makes it beautiful...not that the original is bad...
I like this version a lot better than the original as well; I find the latter a little too thin. This flows very well, a great update.
THANK you MA for resurrectig this from the bargain bin.

Dead tie for me. Original was innovative and energetic, but this version is like an entirely different song. I'm thinking now of "Morning Bell" by Radiohead, which is two songs with the same name.

No kidding! Play the original.... this one is so very lacking!
Sorry, but I like this version better than the album's.
I agree that the original is better, but look at the bright side -- this isn't Solsbury Hill!!! That song MUST have been voted the Clear Channel song of the century by how often they play it. Recently I was flipping through FM channels and heard it on two different Clear Channel stations at the same time!!!
Bored to tears...
Misses the passion of PG's authentic original. Like a neutered dog.

Ah, yet another classic.

No, I don't think you are in the minority. This version does touch the original, IMHO.
If he was to have written and recorded this song today, I think this is more like what it would sound like. It fits in more with his current style.
*bump*

Almost in agreement - - loved the original but could only ratte this a 3

Never heard this version of it by PG. Thanks, RP. Just love the song, no matter what PG version. One of my all-time favorite songs.

The french isn't cheesy. It ties in with the reason he keeps saying "it's a knockout".

Awesome version!
imo better than the original
Man there's been a ton of PG on RP lately. Don't get me wrong, it's good stuff for the most part, but let's space it out a bit. :-)

Jeux sans frontiers....
I never liked the original of this song, but this version is very nice. A great subtle effect, some chillhouse elements, and the hokey chirpy background singers have been replaced.
much better than that pointless remake by somebody else that i keep hearing on rp...

I, too, prefer the original, though it's interesting that Massive Attack has treated this effort not merely with restraint, but with a vision toward a different, more subtle effect altogether.
Yes, that's Kate Bush; I've always loved Peter's work with women, and this is some of the best. Sinead O'Connor contributes the slightest, haunting bit to the first tracks on "Us," and what you can barely hear is her best work since her debut album, "The Lion and the Cobra."
As a side note, Kate Bush is credited with background vocals on the original version, so it's not surprising that you'd hear her in the remix.
Remixes can go all the way from subtle changes all the way to complete rewrites - I did once about a year ago that kept the same basic structure of the original piece, and used samples and such from the original, but once I was finished ended up with a piece that was twice the length of the original and included a new solo in alternating odd time sigantures. So you can do just about anything, just as long as the original writer doesn't kill you in the process.
Raven
One of my favorite PG songs, great version
Very cool.

Exactly, exactly--the original sounded hokey to me, i.e., I asked the same question out loud the first time I heard it as I have with songs that still inspire me: "What is that?" except when I heard the original version I was reviled, it was as though I was repulsed, it just didn't work and it never did seem to.
Shimmer wrote:This is no "remix". It sounds like a completely new performance. Where did this come from?
Right on--the vocal phrasing is very different from the original. I like it, I like it!
This song always makes me giggle as I remember the 'It's a Knockout / Jeux Sans Frontiers' TV show it is inspired by - teams from different European countries in silly costumes trying to knock their opponents off slippery inflatable castles into sludge filled moats with giant foam balls and other dumb stuff. Really high brow, almost as good as the European Song Contest....
;^)
I like it! A new take on a great song.
Sounds like a bad mix to me...Where's the beef..?
Beavis, I declare this song to suck above all else that sucks....
very clever remix

The shell of a brilliant song, lacking substance. <-(
why'd they mess with a good song?

Haven\'t heard that much new Peter Gabriel songs - only the ones that commercial radio keep playing over and over again. But...
It really sounded like Kate Bush is singing along a bit. That can\'t be right, right?
Looks like this is available on the Steam single from 1992.
Lame. Original Preferred. Or even a cover. Maybe Senor Coconut could be persuaded?
Aiee! The original is so much better!
Very tasty indeed. Like the others, not sure where this comes from , but it sounds very nice indeed.
:D
She\'s so funky.
Yeah.
It\'s hard to go wrong with Peter Gabriel doing vocals, but this remix could use a little more kick.
I have always loved this versin of the song.
This is no \"remix\". It sounds like a completely new performance. Where did this come from?
Ooh! i liked this a lot!
I love this remix of an awesome PG tune. Somewhat ambient.
