You can say the sun is shining if you really want to
I can see the moon and it seems so clear
You can take the road that takes you to the stars now
I can take a road that'll see me through
I can take a road that'll see me through.

You can take a road that takes you to the stars now
I can take a road that'll see me through
I can take a road that'll see me through
I can take a road that'll see me through.

It is how we attempt to survive... even if we do not survive.

We create ultimate beauty in the darkness.
Love this open tuning work, handed down by Bert Jansch, Davey Graham , Joni and others...

It should be a saying, hey I didn't like cigars at first but then it went Nick Drake.

I judged an elementary school science fair and a display that stood out was "at what age does someone like coffee?" and they'd given coffee to a whole bunch of people, asked if they liked it, and tabulated the results based on their age.

A really interesting graph came out of it, with no no no no no YES YES YES YES results. So, like cigars and coffee, I'm certain that loving Nick is something that happens as you get older. Biochemically.
......After many years of waiting I finale got my hands on this Master Peace.
I love his whole vibe. I love that his guitar sound is odd and unique. He used interesting picking, weird tunings, all kinds of fascinating stuff. A true talent gone too soon
Sweet sweet lyrics in everything!!
Nick Thanks 😬
it was the VW ad with Pink Moon that got me interested - could not believe I didn't know of him earlier...such a loss
This was the song that turned me onto Nick Drake.{#Sleep}
Wow. Says the average rating is 8 but I gave it a 6 and was thinking that was a bit high. Guess that is what I like about RP a little for everyone.

This is the "clean" version; the unedited version has a profanity-filled tirade which goes on for about 2 minutes, accompanied by the sound of a tinny piano playing from a parlor downstairs.

Nick Drake was a weird, gentle, classically trained, insane singer/songwriter in the Syd Barrett line. Overdosed at twenty-six, probably on purpose. Wrote "Pink Moon." Was born upper-class British, was probably molested, smoked more marijuana than the rest of the world combined, owned and wore only one outfit for the last two years of his life, roamed. Despite writing three of the finest albums in jazz-folk-depressed history (with guest appearances by John Cale and members of the Beach Boys), had no career in his own lifetime, largely due to his refusal to give interviews or play live or even talk. But the longer he's dead, the better he's loved.

If you don't like Nick Drake - don't worry. He probably wouldn't have liked you either!  He's a god in my eyes along with much of the music industry. And he's badly missed in this age of over-produced, manipulated, predictable and immaterial pop crap that has a shelf life shorter than a jam doughnut.

My impression of the album was the same.  "Downer" is putting it lightly - it is downright chilling in it's depression and hopelessness.
However, I bought it with the box set, and the other 2 albums are more light.

It's really sad when human beings with their amazing communication skills and vocabulary have to fling the "f" word around and insult one another's opinions and tastes.
What makes me even more sad is "discovering" an artist, like Nick Drake, like Kristy MacColl, like Danny Gatton, only to find out they've passed on... What do you think they'd make of these attacks that are supposed to pass as "comments"?

I agree completely - the attacks you refer to have no place here or in public discourse in general. Not to worry, though; most of the conversation here is pretty civil. If you take a moment to look at the names of the people flinging around the stupid talk, you'll find they're not here very long or very often. They find they're not welcome. Water seeks its own level. (With the exception of the stubbornest trolls - they just take longer to leave. I could name names ... )

you guys in radio paradise are always surprising me... this song is great!
He reminds me of Donovan, but without the archness and with much better guitar playing.  But one bad thing about this song: it's over too soon!

So glad Mr. Goldsmith introduced this kind young man's music into my life. It is richer and fuller for it. This is the reason that my homepage is RP.

And that's okay. I think we all manage to miss some music that we should have encountered. And even if we just discover something because it's "in fashion" (which is very much not my case, and I suspect 99% of us on here), so? If you appreciate the music made by Nick Drake, hats off to you! If you discovered it because a shallow friend who tries to be trendy introduced you to it, so? If you really like it, cool. Doesn't matter how you found out about it.

Good point. I'm 47 and like you I consider myself more musicallyknowledgable than the "average" person (whatever that means) basically because I have been listening to and reading about music all my life. Yet (and this ie one of the great things about music), I am constantly "discovering" people that I had heard about, or read about, or even heard a song or two by, but never really explored. And Nick Drake is one of these and yes, the VW commercials really made me take note of him for the first time too.

I also believe there are artists that for whatever reason, I just didn't get or appreciate when I was younger. I can't say that the 20 year old or even the 30 year old me would have appreciated him based on what I was listening to at the time. But the 47 year old thinks his stuff is pretty good (and I make no apologies for how I came to realize this).

I just learned recently that Nick's 3 CDs are from the 1970s and that after his music was featured in a Volkswagen commercial, the sales were such that he became #5 on Amazon.com and total sales in a short time exceed the sales for the previous 30 years!

I know this is an old comment but I find it interesting that Rolling Stone would put his albums in the top 500 of all time. I don't know for sure, but I would guess that Rolling Stone completely ignored Nick when he was alive. I think it's sad that I did not even know of him until I heard Pink Moon in a VW commercial. I am from Mexico and had not heard of him before, either. You petulant, pedantic, sorry excuse of a music lover. Love it and will, at my own pace, discover this great composer. Just don't share your demons with an ever-growing, ever-learning, respectable music neighborhood.

I'm currently reading a great biograpy of Nick Drake by a guy named Patrick Humphries. It not only talks about Nick and his depression, but goes into great detail about the musical climate of the time. Nick's music was actually very well accepted by critics, but the only way to get it to the people was to play live shows which he was completely uncomfortable with. Kind of a vicious cycle. He didn't play live much because he didn't think people liked him, and yet people couldn't learn to like him because he was too afraid to play live shows.

One reason why Nick's guitar playing sounds unique is that he used odd tunings, often making them up as he went along. This one's in a weird D modal tuning (DGDDAD). Thanks for this. Having never heard this song before, I instantly guessed it was Nick Drake. And then I wondered what it was that was so distinctive about that solo guitar work that made it so identifiable. It never occured me that the guitar itself was cheap-sounding but I guess I hear what you mean. Doesn't hurt the song though.
