It was all so different then
Nothing yet has really sunk in
Looks like it always did
This flesh and bone
Is just the way that you were tied in
Now there's no one home
I grieve for you
And you leave me
It's so hard to move on
Still loving what's gone
And still life carries on
Carries on and on, and on, and on
The news that truly shocks
Is the empty, empty page
While the final rattle rocks
Its empty, empty cage
And I can't handle this
I grieve for you
And you leave me
Let it out and move on
Missing what's gone
They say life carries on
They say life carries on, and on, and on
Life carries on in the people I meet
In everyone that's out on the street
In all the dogs and cats
In the flies and rats
In the rot and the rust
In the ashes and the dust
Life carries on and on, and on, and on
Life carries on and on, and on
It's just the car that we ride in
A home we reside in
The face that we hide in
The way we are tied in
And life carries on and on, and on, and on
Life carries on and on and on
Did I dream this belief
Or did I believe this dream
Now I can find relief
I grieve

Bill - you are on fire, my friend!!!
Lost my Dad to Covid 2 weeks ago today, and this song perfectly describes what I'm feeling. Everything is a touch surreal, because life doesn't stop for grief.
Water in the pool — as if recorded at a 20-foot depth.
This song, until the middle upbeat point, had that sound, with muffled, extensively bassie-sounding drums.
The US album was pretty much entirely like this.
You either know what I mean or you don't.
I get it.
It's as though you are listening from inside the womb. The thwwwwwap/thwwwwwomp of a heartbeat - transmitted through water.
I totally get it.
It's funny, Kate Bush' "King of the Mountain"always plays next to Peter Gabriel's "I Grieve" I suspect Eric Satie's "Gnoisienne No 1" to play very soon as I noticed this too. Hmmm... Patterns in the Matrix.
Both tracks feature the same guitarist - David Rhodes - who also once played with Talk Talk. His solo albums are worth a listen too.

My condolences at your loss.
Wow. So sorry for your loss. Thank you for sharing such a personal experience. Changes the song for me - maybe I never really listened before.
Godspeed.

A great flow!
The raspy tone of his voice hits a place that goes right to the back of my neck....I can't explain it....but it is a singular experience with PG.
Thanks so much for mentioning this. I first saw Peter in 1982 - so amazing to see him almost 10 years earlier. Such a compelling performer - a real master on the stage.
Just like me...At least the East Orange part...;-)

I saw Genesis when they toured "Selling England" - it's hard to convey just how odd his shaven blue head was. But the band was epically good.
This post shows the strength of music - for every nay-sayer, there will be a story like this. Moving and emotional music. A simple post, but alongside the tune it brings a tear to my eye...

But life carries on.
We can all relate, right?
8-->9!!!
Please allow this note to serve as official documentation that I'm presently, albeit temporarily, rendered useless - at least until this PG number is over (and perhaps even moments after, until I've wiped the tears from my face).
Regretfully, j.

To all the greatness that's left, I salute you…
Thank you.
I am not sure what you mean by this? Is there water in the pool, or is it reverb you are referring to?

I agree.
Yes, loved this soundtrack

I think it needs more overplay!
Spector is behind his own 4 walls of sound now!
Right where he belongs!
Good lord Stingray, that's twice I've agreed with you. We must both be mellowing.
You never will know when the Doctor shows up.
You're in good hands here, mkinnan.
Current tour had lots of old , and interesting stuff. In cinemas soon!

Well stated Thank you ziakut!
I want to see him live playing all this stuff. Not the songs that get airplay. Yeah those are good but this wow, so much talent!
And now the Navy Yard.
What will it take?
A Marxist dictatorship?

Right where he belongs!
..and you are perfectly correct doing so!
For me it's a 9, though!
!!!!!
And a wall of emotion too!
And now the Navy Yard.
What will it take? How many more?
With Genesis or alone, creativity, music, voice are here , rare missings .....
And glad that that I finally feel and understand viscerally this songs meaning.
It's going on my pod tonight.
Thank you, PG. A musician and composer from, of and for the heart, no doubt.
Everybody in my churches loves this song...
Despite some of the snarky negativism of some of the reviews, this still ranks a 7.8. Not bad, Peter.
Saw him live in LA in 88 - transcendental show.
Unbelievable sadness.
