rain come down, rain come down
hear him above ridin' around.....

What I thought I saw at first glance...
WRT the below conversation, check out King Missile's "Jesus Was Way Cool"

Right. He definitely would be disgusted by catholic clerics abusing children and the church evading law. Or would he be more disgusted by cardinals, bishops etc. living in wealth and opulence while preaching humbleness and poverty? Do they really represent what Jesus had in mind? Nope.
I don't identify with any organized religion but last time I checked, Jesus may have been a pretty cool guy. A rebel. Some even call him a zealot. The problem is that PEOPLE got hold of his message and retold, rewrote, edited, reedacted and basically appropriated it over the millennia to suit whatever purpose they had and now we end up with people arguing, battling and often killing each other over whose version is right. Jesus has become a brand and I don't think Jesus would be too happy about it.

A thing is a thing. Not what is said of the thing.
Just listening after TS Imelda hit Houston yeaterday. I didn't get the Jesus part, but the "rain come down" part hit home today.

This album ranks very high up on my "one album hit wonders" list. Truly stunning from beginning to end and what a great period sound they have. Shame they broke up or at least quit recording.
No religious connundrum for me!

SAVE ME JEEBUS!
Frack, is this a music station or what? Gospel and spirituals are music last time I checked. My faith traditiion (not one I really practice) is NOT in line with the lyrics, but I had to stop what I was doing to see who this was. I agree with Shawkitten 1/2014 comment below.
I never thought there would be so much negativity as in put-downs and making fun of people in the comment space. Musical critiques are great, but lighten up, folks!

That's ironic, because I was in a goodwill recently and found a copy of the Eastmountainsouth album with the song "Rain Come Down" on it. Looks like it was just played once or twice, and I can't believe that someone could actually listen closely to this album and discard it like it was just a Frank Zappa songbook or something. So I bought it, and immediately ejected my well used Creed CD and played it the whole ride home on full blast. It wasn't until I pulled into the driveway that I turned it down so I could continue in "Stealth Christian Rock" mode and not wake anyone up.
I bought this CD after I heard them on Morning Becomes Eclectic and then Goodwilled it when I listened more more closely and realized that it was stealth Christian rock. I felt like the church organist who accidentally ordered the Frank Zappa songbook online. There should be some kind of a PMRC sticker on stuff like this. With a picture of the dude from Creed.

I'm blown away by all the religious comments. This is an amazing album, and some songs are period pieces. In Civil War times, this type of Spiritual was common. Please, folks...we all have hot buttons about our beliefs. But sometimes it's just history, and to yank out the references would not be authentic. Enjoy it for what it is.
I am not a Christian by any stretch, but I can enjoy gospel, old spirituals and choral/hymnal work when it's passionate, historically accurate,,beautiful and well-done.

"Goodwilling" a CD with Christian themes is tantamount to rejecting western civilization. Of course that's par for the course these days, but it isn't exactly the tolerant thing to do. In contrast, Christians (other than perhaps Old Order Mennonites and Amish), seldom reject wholesale what the culture at large has to offer. That fact certainly ought to make one wonder about who is intolerant and who isn't.

on, oh, seeker
come go to glory with me

come join the band of angels
<rant> Can't tell you how often this has come up. Last four family funerals, a well meaning person places their arm on mine
"Don't worry, he's an angel now"
I have no problem with any belief system that causes no harm and leaves those of other persuasions alone, but c'mon Christians: know a little about the structure of your own faith! The dead do not become angels, angels are not and never were human within the canons of the creed.
Satan = angel Michael = archangel My dead family member ≠ angel
I wonder if these are the same people that thinks all of Islam demands honor killings of female relatives because a few fundamentalists engage in the practice. </rant>

This is the biggest BS statement I've read in a long time. Believe it or not, many aetheists and agnostics are just as committed to their lack of belief as you are to your belief.
Accept that 80% plus of Americans believe even if you don't and then accept that belief is a natural part of existence and the human condition. Following what 80% do isn't being a very rugged individualist.
That may mean pulling back on that "in-your-face cause I don't believe" arrogance but in the end, life will have less conflict for you. What "arrogance"? Just because someone doesn't believe in your views, that makes them arrogant? BTW Arrogant Aethiests is the name of my new band.
Just enjoy the music because it speaks to the soul; even if atheists don't have one. If one human has a soul, they all have a soul regardless of their beliefs. You can't pick an choose how the universe works based on your preferences.

How rude to tell somebody who's an atheist he/she doesn't have a soul, how dare you?!
When i die, i know it's over with my life. I'm a creation of nature and not of something fiction as a god. The "high" intelligence of us humans makes us capable to imagine stuff like that, but no one can ever convince me that there's something/someone "up there"...
As for this song... Sounds very nice!!!

Interesting conversation on faith, or the lack thereof.
I actually envy people with faith, and would never criticize them for having it. To the contrary.
Crash Davis said in Bull Durham, "We're winning. If Nuke thinks he's winning these games because he's wearing a garter belt under his baseball pants, then he is. Our job is not to mess with that."
So, if it works for you, by all means believe it.

I have to agree on the religious nature. If you can get past that part, I found it a very enjoyable mellow out album. It was worth the effort to track it down. I finally found it new in the used bargain bin while Tower still existed. Very happy to have tracked them down and related Hem, among other RP finds like PT. For me it's a great chill out album and worth the effort to find. Thanks again to RP broadening my listening experience.
I must say that the first 5-10 seconds of the song were wonderful and spectacular. It'd (IMHO) make a great instrumental. . .BUT. . .
The first mention of God really put me off, and I'm not necessarily an atheist I'm just not very religious and would much rather not hear it so obviously in my music.
Still gave it a 7, maybe if I hear it a few more times my opinion will change.

No, I think "Propaganda" is the perfect word here.

I don't get this comment. Some of the greatest music in Western culture, traveling back at least a millennium, has been and continues to be inspired by various notions about god and/or gods. The key here is the inspiration and the result. Now, if you want to try and make me like Jesus Christ Superstar, maybe the theme of the rather pedestrian music flavors my distaste for it.

I picked up this album a few months back after hearing a tune of theirs. I should have saved my money. The songs are original and well produced, but it's depressing. If you're hankering for that morning dose of melancholy, fire this up. You'll be sitting at a rainy window in nothing flat!
Sounds like a melancholic Sheryl Crow.

Possibly. Those of us who resonate with anguish find it wherever it may be trying to hide.
I think I discovered this band here. Wish I had the time to hear all of their albums. That goes on my To Do list, alas.

And not just classical hymns; there a plenty of new liturgical settings (Marty Haugen's assorted Lutheran liturgies come to mind) that have an excellent contemporary sound and inclusive lyrics and are also all about Jesus.

Still an excellent tune. I kinda tired of this album after a while, but it's still a worthwhile purchase.
Best Gospel Ever.
boring
I really like the old church manner of phrasing this band practices in their songs. It reminds me of the more nativist preaching styles that one could still hear in the Midwest when I was growing up in the 70's. Like gospel, it has a power and rhythm unique to the background of the rural US.
This wasn't the track that made me buy the album, but, boy, was I happy when I first heard it.
Excellent tune.
I LOVE IT!!!

B&R don't have to play these tunes, they help keep it eclectic. Nice social experiment, watching the reactions.
Great tune , btw.

Yes. I am really growing to like this band. It is also good to know that the word "Jesus" has not been banned entirely from our culture. Before you knee-jerk neo-pagans start for your reply button, let me tell you that my self designation is "Lapsed Catholic" (for those of you that don't know the phrase, it means that I was raised Catholic, but rebelled against the strictness of the church and its hierarchy, and now I go to church only at holidays to make my parents and inlaws happy). I do respect the rights of others to worship and believe as they wish, even if I decide not to so worship.

I love the feel of old-style appalachian song themes combined with a skillful female voice and very polished guitar work. It puts me in mind of Pentangle among others.
OK, just got this, (through RP), it is one of those discs that are more enjoyable than you had imagined...and I hoped they were GOOD. Like the reviewer said, check out MARK'S SONG. Sweet/sad. Altogether 9 of 10. Kat sounds a lot like Amy Grant (vocals) in a few tunes, all good.

Yup.
While you're at it, more NICKEL CREEK, please!
oy, jesus music again
This song gets better and better with every listen.

I find it very inspiring. I guess not everything is the same to every person
JESUS!
Get rid of the electric drum track, and I'd think highly of it.
Are you kidding? I happen to think the detailed percussion elements here are beautiful - the crowning touch on this gorgeous track!
Not bad at all.
quite "Joan Osbourne"y

You go girl. Good group, good tune.

Hey play nice, kids!
I agree with jokes. It seems like these days listening to RP is more and more like going to church, to the point that I have written the masters of this domain to figure out if it's just me or what...
BTW, how can anyone like "Dune" that much??

I bought the album the first time I heard this on RP and I still think they are brilliant. Full volume here in England...

good comparison. When she's soft there's a bit of the whispery Beth Orton sound too.

Or a wet dreary, rainy afternoon here in South Carolina where we are getting the remnants of now Tropical Storm Frances.

Doesn't get any better than this!
One of my favorite new groups/album. I got to hear them playing live on XM Radio a few weeks back and it transported me! I just sat in the car and *listened*.
Just heard them do this live on the radio on KUT here in Austin. And it's raining. Cool tune.
I think it's kinda strange that people were harping on Joseph Arthur's "Redemption's Son" because of it's religious imagery but no one mentions it here. If you are going to criticize, please be consistent.
This song wraps you in sound like something off of the Sundays' Static and Silence. I love that.
Anyone else hear Joan Osborne's "Saint Theresa" in the verses here??
veddy veddy nice

I bought this CD on the strength of the tracks I've heard on RP over the last few weeks, I wasn't disappointed; there isn't a single bad track on the album! I can't remember when I could last say that about an album!! Outstanding.
I purchased this CD a few months ago. It's great. As mentioned in other threads, it's a bit overproduced, but the melodies and the perfect blend of their voices make it a winner. I'd like to hear them stripped down a bit...
This seems to be a RP favorite. I think I've heard it every day this week!
Very nice. I'll be looking for more from "eastmountainsouth".
I'm really enjoying all the cuts I've heard from this album. This is definitely going into my Amazon wishlist. Thanks Rebecca and Bill for introducing me to this wonderful band.
