The sun had gone down
Oer the hills in the west
Its last beam had faded
Oer the mountain crest
Amandy was there.. friendless and forlorn
With her face bathed in blood and her garments all torn
Oh, amandy
Oh, amandy
The campfires were kindled
Each warrior was there and amandy was bound
Her white bosom bare
It was vengeance that she counted in the eyes of her foe
And sighed for the time
When her suffering might close
Oh, amandy... oh, amandy
Oh, amandy yeah yeah...
Oh, amandy...
Young alban their leader
Suddenly appeared
With an eye like an eagle
And a step like a deer
He said, "brothers, if your victim be burned by a tree
Young alban the leader
Your victim shall be
Oh, amandy
Oh, amandy
The next morning was a vision of red, white and blue
Gliding oer the waters
In a light, bark canoe
Like a wild dove sails over the tide
Young alban and amandy together did ride
Young alban and amandy together did ride
Oh, ride on
Oh, amandy
Oh, amandy
Yeah...
Oh, amandy
Oer the hills in the west
Its last beam had faded
Oer the mountain crest
Amandy was there.. friendless and forlorn
With her face bathed in blood and her garments all torn
Oh, amandy
Oh, amandy

Fleetwood Mac meets Steeleye Span, I like it :)
They should have used more of the original words. Song would have made more sense.
like the traditional obscureness of it...

Well at least she didn't toss the baby off of the bridge into the Chattahoochie River or whatever the name of that bridge was. Or did she?

Is it? I can't for the life of me figure the meaning. It seems like Alban is the leader of a group that wants to do violent things to Amandy, but then he decides he to offer himself to the group in her place? But then Alban and Amandy ride off together? It's very vague. I can think of many (some contradictory) interpretations, but none of them seem particularly more appropriate than the others.
They rode to the bark canoe on a unicorn.

Oh It looks like Fleetwood Mac!!

It's an old folk song - apparently Alban was a leader of a Native American (fka "Indian") tribe and Amandy was a white girl who was kidnapped by the tribe.

Hmm... A song about Stockholm Syndrome if ever there was one. Or perhaps just good old-fashioned human trafficking. Since we don't really get Amandy's version of events, it's hard to say...

Everyone in my arche noah loves Litarotica.
And again today! Scanning old photos from the 70's and 80's and have the volume at 11. England win the Ashes and RP lay great music, what more could I ask for. And now Graham Parker!

I really miss this band. Peter Bradley Adams solo stuff is fine, but it does not have the sublime, penetrating, longevity that this duo had.
A defunct duo with one great album.
Nice ballad.

Songs built around women's names bug me for some reason. "Jennifer Juniper" anyone?
The only ones that don't get my fur up are probably "Amie," "Allison" and "Sweet Melissa."

Excellent album and band. Saw them open for Lucinda Williams about ten years ago.

The last physical CD I bought to date. Pretty darn good in its entirety. Really carries the mood & tone throughout.

I just discovered that the version of this song that I have on my MP3 player is a live, acoustic version - MUCH more powerful than the album version.

Que Steven Segal walking out of the mist looking very serious and yet mysterious.

Such a lovely voice
I still love "You Dance" the best... Crossing my fingers that Bill will play it someday when I'm actually listening...
I'm a sucker for harmonies like this; also when two voices are in "unison", but an octave apart, like on some parts of this song. Very cool.

And in keeping with the theme and the personnel, kindly play Long Black Veil by The Band.

At first I thought this song was weird, but it grows on you.
Anyone hear of work on more discs?
9 strong.
Okay, so, I really do like mountain folk tunes like this but I really hate the new-agey Enya-esque background music a great deal. It doesn't fit, to me. And then the singer takes a bit of a Buckley-esque aria trip at the end that I can't appeciate either.
amandy - great name

At first, I thought this lyric was something about the flag, which always seemed out of place for me. But if you think about it, and imagine the scene, she's wearing white clothing (a dress of some sort probably), with blood all over it, with blue sky and water. Also white clouds. The scene would be red, white and blue. Really beautiful imagery.

I never listened to the lyrics. Just enjoyed the melody and the groove. I may have to start paying attention! For the listener who spoke of the band's name. Taken from Brando's MC group in The Wild One-from around 1951--in case this hasn't already been mentioned...

Hauntingly beautiful.
This whole CD is great. I bought it last weekend and I love it.
This is still one of my favorite songs on the CD.
This sounds like the sort of thing I would not like. But I am kind of liking it.
WOW! Another great song from this band.
I don't think I've heard a song of theirs yet that I haven't liked. I must buy the CD.
My partner won a copy of this CD at the RP Spring Fling. The whole album is great. I was not disappointed in the least.
Beautiful... I LOVE this track!!! I bought the album based on what I've heard on RP and in spite of playing the album a LOT every track is still a gem and can listen to over and over again...

i can understand this feeling. while i enjoy eastmountainsouth, their music sounds kinda the same after a while. it's nice to hear a sprinkle of them, rather than a long block of nothing but them, i'm sure. heh.
In an odd way, they really put me in mind of some of Pentangle's earlier works. The words may be ancient, but the flavouring is all modern.

Mercifully short. I was just thinking that this needed to end and it did.
Who could dispute thought that they know how to pick a catchy band name and Song title.
Sounds more like a celtic pop ripoff :(
Album notes say he didn't play, but I'd swear I hear Robbie Robertson on guitar (he executive produced).
Nice rework of a traditional tune (that Barry Manilow had nothing to do with! ).
