There's a bump in the basement
There's a knocking on the wall
In the pumping of the pistons
I swear I heard you call

There's a bump in the basement
There's a hole in the floor
There's a guard in the garden
Locking up the door

There's a rumble in the floorboards
No shutting out the sound
And the workers down below me
Digging underground

Feel the building all around me
Like a wrap of armoured skin
But the more we are protected
The more we're trapped within

We're building up and up.

We're building up and up.

We're building up and up.

We're building up and up.till we can touch the sky.

Tell it like it is
Till there's no misunderstanding
When you strip it right back
Man feed machine
Machine feed man

Tell it like it is (And on this land, we cast our fortune)
Till there's no misunderstanding (And on this ground, we make our home)
You make up what you like
Man feed machine
Machine feed man

Brick by brick by brick by brick we're building
Brick by brick by brick by brick we're building
Brick by brick by brick by brick we're building
Brick by brick by brick by brick we're building
Brick by brick by brick by brick we're building
Brick by brick by brick by brick we're building

Oh Dear, Guys ( it's always guys). Relax, Phil Collins was very nice to my daughter when she went to Ghana to help in a clinic. Sent her money after she wrote him a letter. Apart from that he was really good in Brand X - but that was jazzy stuff so you may hate him for that as well

marvelous...  love it...

Anyone remember the eighties?  Yep.  Raising kids.  Remember it well; not many intoxicants during that period.

That was when we all thought that Phil Collins was the talented guy that left Genesis.  Depends on your definition of "talent".  Some of us thought Mr. Gabriel's departure as such.   Agreed.  I and everyone I knew always thought of Gabriel as true genuis

Go on, admit it, you KNOW you did!   Mr. Collins' music was included in a lot of movies, and did seem to be everywhere on Miami Vice.  Or was that the '90s?  In fact, that's why they hosted it on Miami Vice; the music was so awful it was a crime unto itself...
Not criticizing, just saying I have a differing opinion.

Ok, I'll stop bashing Phil now - lol

Phil Collins: Don't forget, he had to make up the name "Susudio" because he couldn't find any other word to rhyme.  Typical for his mediocre, banal lyrics (and compositions, for that matter).  I think that song appeared on that mess called "No Talent Required"....

It's an insult to Barry Manilow to put that tone-deaf w@nker Collins in the same category. At least Manilow can sing and doesn't take himself seriously. For that matter, it's an insult to w@nkers to elevate Collins to the same category. My fave Collins moment was when he was comprehensively gulled in the infamous Channel 4 Brass Eye 'pedo special' into talking "nonce sense", after which he threatened legal action against the channel because he couldn't accept being exposed as a complete and utter tit.

I loathed Genesis back in my adolescence, and that loathing unfortunately extended to all its former members. It's only after listening to Gabriel on RP that I realise how great an artist he is, and how untainted with the Genesis bombastic bollox he is.

Hah! not at all. Certain people continue to hold a place in your heart no matter how much time passes. PG is definitely one for me along with David Attenborough and Doctor Who. PG was part of my musical awakening (if you can call it such) in the early 80's.

PC's first couple solo albums were pretty good before he started catering to the top 40 crowd

We be dancing...  love it...

He'd probably been listening to a lot of NIN.  :)

He performed this during the encore at the San Jose show last month.  I'd never heard it live before.  Wow!
Waiting for my CD's of the show to be delivered...
Gawd! It has a sort of Rob Zombie vibe!
This might sound weird, but I hope he never dies...
Excellent Gritty Gabriel.
Agreed, this one was under my radar.
Thought I knew all of Peter Gabriel woks, then RPbplays this. Thanks Rebecca and Bill!
I'm really digging this one.
{#Eek} Shocked that this is Peter Gabriel!  I like!

I stand in solidarity with the He Man (and Women) PG haters club.{#Snooty} This was one strange movie BTW.

Oh hells yeah.
OVO is almost a masterpiece. Some of the music is amongst PG's best and extremely powerful. However the premise is/was odd and some of the poetry is decidedly clunky and a bit sixth form.

 an obscure but still excellent cut from the most vital voice of his generation... Peter invented "contemporary" if that's what you call his synthesis of seemingly dissimilar musical elements... {#Notworthy}

Just missed what all the hoopla was about...
Interesting track.  It'd originally been on OVO, the music he'd written for the Millennium Show.  The same album had "Father and Son" and "Downside Up", which he now plays live pretty regularly.  You can find for info at the OVO wiki page.  If you haven't heard the album, it's worth exploring!

Same here - I'd never have twigged this for Peter Gabriel. The guy just keeps on innovating... 9 from the Nottingham jury.

Agree on the music.  The movie was forgettable, but on a rainy Tuesday night with nothing else happening, it would be a diversion...

This guy is just pure, walking genius. I know a lot of his music, but hadn't heard (or maybe remembered) this. It's one of those many RP tunes that plays and I have to stop what I'm doing and find out the title/artist/album. But I'm probably the ONLY one that EVER does that. Thanks, Bill & Bec!

Srsly? Did not know that. I'm a huge BT fan. Perhaps that's why this sounds so different from Gabriel's other stuff.

Really good.  Kind of Philip Glass-like.
Love this. Went to see the OVO show at the Millennium Dome back in '00 in London, it was awesome and the Gabriel soundtrack was amazing. Is this also from that or what?

Sounds not so good today for me. Normally i like his music very much, but this one today!??

Now that's a plaisant surprise.  I didn't know he performed such piece let alone on some OST.  Good find.

I'll second that. What a fantastic soundtrack from a sucko-barfo movie. Electronica and Peter Gabriel seem to mix so well. Way to go Bill. Interesting factoid about BT and Sasha working on this one. Love it. davin wrote:

that's one of the freshest segues i've heard in quite a while! that driving bass from dark star just carried right over!
Well I looked to see if The Orb was involved.
I'm a total PG fan, but everytime I hear this, I have to look at the playlist to see who it is. This is a great and fairly different piece by Pete, and I like it! *edit* in places, it sounds like Tangerine Dream!
Loved this tune the first time I heard it in the movie 'Red Planet.' That's the meanest, nastiest groove and I love it. I agree with the folks who could be fooled into think Jeff Beck was cooking up some more noise. Glad to hear it on RP!

That was a cool video. What is Laurie doing today? Haven't heard/seen anything from her lately. This is the first time that I have heard this song. The rating has gone up since posting a 5 at the beginning. Now a 7.
Always liked Peter Gabriel though I've never owned an album (go figure). Everytime I hear a tune of his that I haven't heard I am not surprised that it's him and that I like it. I dig this tune.
PG stretching the envelope a little - as usual
Terrific sound.

Good version of the song - gives it more drive than the original had.
I really like the title. It made me pay attention to the song. Very intriguing imagry.

Just had this on in the car this AM. Hoping to hear it soon... Ta-DAH! RP Rules!
Sorry, Mr. Gabriel, but you just blew it in this one.
Passionless, repetitious, but shouldn't offend the old people-- Peter Gabriel's stock in trade.
doo-dooo-dooo doo-dooo-doooo doo-doooo-dooooo dooo-doooo-dooooo-dooooooooo Rrrrrawkin' good tune!!!!!!
Right for the fools who would rather slag PG off. Grow up learn what real music is. Get a life... The tower that ate people is called that because the original version of this track is part of the OVO mellenium exsperience album he did for the Mellenium dome show in london. The tower was part of the show. So there is a reason behind the name.
you guys like this track, check out "While The Earth Sleeps'....a collaboration of Peter Gabriel and Deep Forest on the 'Strange Days' soundtrack, sung in Macedonian. love it.

And the Mirror of Despair - it's a little crooked, down on the left - down a little more - a little more - perfection! PG is just dandy overall. He did this at his show here in Toronto about two years ago. We bought the authorized bootleg (he sold double CD burns made off the soundboard for each of his concerns that tour). On it he talks about writing this song for what he called a children's show. Perhaps that was before the Ovo show at the Dome...
