I don't post much in the way of negative comments cuz I love the RP playlist, but this truly sucks. I don't get drunken wailing, nor do I get the Pogues at all.

Please... make... it... stop...

Are all drunks "flawed geniuses" or just this one? Just let me know, because I could fit the bill if you need me too. I could just be a miserable drunk and mumble "Summer in Siam" over and over. Yeah, you are right. Those of us that do work for a living are the stupid ones. I know....

If this was the best they could get out of him, maybe they should have just found someone else or given up. This is awful. A 1.
They actually did both. The band got tired of Shane MacGowan (lead singer on this track) and booted him from the band after this album. And when their subsequent two albums flopped, they gave it up for good.
MacGowan actually had a decent singing voice before it became affected by an apparently constant state of intoxication. Anyone who has heard any recordings from The Nips (MacGowan's band prior to the Pogues) can hardly believe it's the same person -- he actually annunciates clearly and you don't have to strain or run to a lyrics website to figure out what the hell he's saying. You can hear the vocals going downhill with every successive Pogues album until at last on the 5th album (Hell's Ditch, whence this song came) someone else sings half the songs and the other half Shane does sing sound like he's bored with the whole routine and just wants to get the recording sessions over with.
The growling, slurred lyrics worked well when he still had enthusiasm and when the songs were about battles and bar brawls and nights of drunken revelry. Even heartfelt ballads like "Lullaby of London" were endearing because you could tell he was actually enthusiastic about the subject matter of the song. But by the time Hell's Ditch came out, MacGowan just wasn't up to the task any more, and it is never more evident than in this song.
Until I looked it up, I actually thought this was a rare Rolling Stones tune (you know, the 'Drunk Sessions IV'). I wonder if it'd score any higher from them...
From the Pogues, there's so much better. And from all artists in general, for that matter. No thanks.
Uhhh...who told this guy he could sing? Or is he just drunk right now?
Reading the comments, it sounds like he probably is drunk. If this was the best they could get out of him, maybe they should have just found someone else or given up. This is awful. A 1.
try listening to rainy night in soho, thousands are sailing. Or the fairly topical Fairy Tale of New York.

Thailand is also known as Siam, which was the country's official name until May 11, 1949. The word Thai means "free" in the Thai language. It is also the name of the Thai people - leading some inhabitants, particularly the sizeable Chinese minority, still to use the name Siam.

Does that mean the Pogues are very old or Chinese?
Man, he's sure getting his money's worth out of the slurred "ItsSummerInSiam" line.
I lost count at 635,961 repetitions.
It'd sound a lot better without the slobber ... or if he took the cotton balls out of his mouth. Strangely, however, I can't say that I hate the song ... it seems like a cross between a drunk Van M. and T. Waits in "The Piano Has Been Drinking."
Is he saying "winter in Siam??"
Every time I hear this, I think it's a bad Van Morrison song.
ahhhh this is great :umbrella.gif:

I'm a huge Pogues fan but I gotta tell ya, I just hate this song. I don't know why this song is so universally revered by Pogues fans and even some non-fans. IMO it's one of their worst songs from the McGowan era.
I'm so with you on this one.

Truly awful. Utterly without merit. I weep for the server disk space being wasted storing this song.
My wife has requested that I post a comment. She doesn't like this song, says it's fruity.

It would be a pretty safe bet that he was.

This is hella lame. This isn't one of their most inspired efforts.

Another example of a band I love and a song of theirs that I'm not so thrilled by. Close, keep trying! ;)
