I've searched the holy books
Tried to unravel the mystery of Jesus Christ, the saviour
I've read the poets and the analysts
Searched through the books on human behaviour
I travelled the whole world around
For an answer that refused to be found
I don't know why and I don't know how
But she's nobody's baby now

I loved her then and I guess I love her still
Hers is the face I see when a certain mood moves in
She lives in my blood and skin
Her wild feral stare, her dark hair
Her winter lips as cold as stone
Yeah, I was her man
But there are some things even love won't allow
I held her hand but I don't hold it now
I don't know why and I don't know how
But she's nobody's baby now

This is her dress that I loved best
With the blue quilted violets across the breast
And these are my many letters
Torn to pieces by her long-fingered hand
I was her cruel-hearted man
And though I've tried to lay her ghost down
She's moving through me, even now
I don't know why and I don't know how
But she's nobody's baby now

Well, I don't.
From the days of old which we like and appreciate.
Always nice to hear this great song!

Great song and I feel it should not diminish it in any way to say it is still far from the best song on the album.

Wow, really? I don't know much Nick Cave but a lot of his songs that I've heard are too dark and weird to enjoy. This is beautiful, however. And there are even better songs on the album, you say? Gotta check it out.

Bill, you were reading my mind!
fuckin' gorgeous voice doing a great song, imo

"She lives in my blood and skin
Her wild feral stare, her dark hair
Her winter lips as cold as stone
Yeah, I was her man"

brings forth memories of brilliant strong times of my life
I think I'd like to hear Eddie Vedder cover this song...
Good, bad, I'm the guy with the mullet...

This is a cautionary tale...

If you plan to be one of the best poet and songwriter of a generation, just don't grow a mullet when it's fashionable to do so.
Very good song!
Okay that was great.
Great song and I feel it should not diminish it in any way to say it is still far from the best song on the album.

Awesome stuff.
god i love nick cave and the bad seeds!
The more I listen to him the more I really really appreciate his stuff. The misses HATES his music though! {#Think} She'll come around eventually I'm sure {#Yes}
Great song, one of my favourites from Nick. It has become a reference tune for me when testing hifi equipment..love the subtle acoustic details in it
Wicked cool
(wow long neck, eh?)
Wow.  Freaking intense lyrics.  I can relate . . . too well.

Not a bad song on this album. Arguably his best. Like most of Nick Cave's music it takes four or five listens and a look at the lyrics before you know it is great.
