Wakin' up, feelin', good and limber
When the telephone, it ring
Was a bad man from California
Tellin' of a stone he'd bring

And of, better days
From this town, we'd escape
If we, holler loud, and make our way
We'd all live, One Big Holiday

So we listened &, up the river
And recorded all the sounds
Was some shakin' & some, record playin'
All the leather kids were loud

22 year old song?! I’ve said it before, god I’m old
Boy I miss Guitar Hero...
This entire album is great.  One of the few albums I can say that about.  This is a band that leaves it all on stage....  pure energy!

My Morning Jacket on Conan.

To Conan's credit... he dug the band.
It took me awhile to appreciate this album. Once I saw them live, it clicked. Brilliant performers.
Excellent stoner music.  I mean that as a compliment.

By the way, my parents can't sing.

Dog bless Louisville; I've seen MMJ twice, in Lexington in 2011, and in Louisville at the Forecastle Festival in 2012. I've also seen Jim James perform a few times solo in small venues in Lex around those same years. I hope MMJ will release some new music soon. In the meantime, they're doing good work.
Such a great late night, loud song.  It's helped me get rid of some pent-up stuff.  Love this record.
First comment in 10 years on this song.

Started 8, then went to 7. They have done much better.

Photoshop, real bears only wear silver tinsel.

"So Mr. Horse, how did you feel about this song?"

"Hmmmm....no sir, I didn't like it."

Damn skippy that's a bear there. The bear Jim James and the band had to fight it with nothing more than a socket wrench in hand on one of their hiking trips, I like to believe.

Real men, they are. This tune always hypes me up.

I thought it was the insides of a home built submarine... with a bear thrown in for good measure.

Probably because the vocals were recorded in an empty grain silo?

I enjoy the production and the reverb on the vocals; everything doesn't have to sound like Steely Dan or Barbra Streisand.

What a bizarre album cover.

Everyone sings well when you have excessive reverb on your voice.  That's why people sing in the shower.  But it's the equivalent of having to pour ketchup on steak.

If you'd seen him live, and then made that claim, you might have a valid argument.

I completely agree. The first time I heard it, I was rather indifferent. The more I listened, the more it got under my skin.
Still love this whole strange record.
Utterly dreadful in every way. Maybe if I was on drugs... but even then only maybe.
Why does this remind me of Neil Young? {#Think}  (Not that that's a bad thing. {#Wink})
It sounds like he's singing in some giant, undampened hall, or maybe a cave.  I don't like the effect one bit.  It's grating!   Actually, come to think of it, the sound in general on this sound is just grating.  The cymbals, oh god, they just don't stop!  I can tell I'd like it if they upped the production a tad, though, so I guess it's a 4.
Hm, not bad!
Personally, I think he has an awesome voice. Very fitting to the style, sound, etc ...
Great start, it actually had me tapping fingers. Then he opened his mouth. Ugh...
I like this! 8

SEE THEM LIVE
Sweet rock-n-roll. It lives! Check out the live version on this song on the double CD Okonokos, or however you spell it.
They remind me of that band Evening Overcoat. Kidding.
Someone, please let the guy out of the can!
I read a lot of bitchy comments, but I didn't that that song was all that terrible.
Not my favorite MMJ song but good nonetheless. I can't wait to see them (again) at Lollapalooza.

Holy smokes. This mix is so bad it made it impossible to tune out. Never would have realized that was the reason.
ed.: I have no idea whether the mix is bad or good.  Not being an expert.  But, man, I sure do not like it.

I couldnt fgure out what they were going for with the mix or why. It is a shame with todays techs and the sound they put down. This CD could have been so much more.

Lordy, this one always reminds me of REO Speedwagon.
I can see that. The first couple measures of high-hat reminded me of Bruce Springsteen's "Candy's Room" - a great but overlooked song, IMHO. This is also a cool song.
whoa um there I was, rockin out and then he sung well that dropped you a few points buddy ugh go back to the intro!

Or from "New Year's Day" to "One Big Holiday"?
I didn't realize there were so many people who don't like Jim James' vocals. I think it is refreshing, myself. Did you know he recorded the vocals in an old grain silo? It seems to give it that haunting sound.
Lordy, this one always reminds me of REO Speedwagon.
I like the sound and structure of this song, although the lead guitar playing is pretty weak. Sounds OK, but it's not extraordinarily skillful.
Great Gorup......but...medium song!!!
These guys are fantastic live. If you have the means, I highly recommend it.
The big sound reminds me of Flaming Lips.
Make it stop! My ears, my ears...

Joe Walsh, definitely, from the James Gang days. I can't find the exact song, but Rocky Mountain Way will bring it back, also try Walk Away and Turn to Stone

The guitar riffs are so familiar ... It's bugging me. I believe it's from a Roy Buchanan song from about the mid 70's with the same chords (or really similar). (which may not have been an original either) I like it, but I've heard this before...
Boy, that was off to a really promising start. What a letdown!
How's come you aren't playing anything from their new one, "Z"? Hmmmm?
Toward the end, gets into a whole Isaac Hayes Theme from Shaft thing, which is kinda strange. Cool that they can inspire comparisons ranging from Neil Young (I don't see it) to Lindsay Buckingham (maybe) to Isaac Hayes (listen, it's there!).
Started off cool.... and then the singing started. Sounds like one of those actors that decided to start singing.

Not that I dont like this band, I am weary because I am hearing them entirely to much on RP lately

You can find this and some better songs (IMO) on the free CD that Wired magazine has this month (cover of Beastie Boys). Good stuff I'd never heard of before - some more should be upped to here! :)
BLAST! Just came back in...missed it! Soon...very soon it WILL be mine...my Preciousss!
I was wondering why this song reminded me of some 70s band and then I read a review which compared it to Neil Young. I don't know if I'd go so far as to compare the lead guitarist to Lyndsey Buckingham, but I do like what I've heard of this band.

If you even vaguely like this, do yourself a favour and catch them live. GREAT show. Saw them in Melbourne, Australia earlier this year and it was the best show I have seen in a while. They ROCKED.

Here I go quoting myself! This song is still good. Not sure I am a fan yet though.

You're serious? Yeah, it was a solo. No, it wasn't a cool one.
I agree that the solo on the album version is quite subdued and plainish. That said, the first time I heard these guys was live on Late Night with Conan O'Brien playing this song, and they rocked out like no other. They played without the massive reverb used throughout their albums, and made up for the open space by playing crunchier and beefier. The guitar solos were exponentially wilder and faster. It was awesome.
Wow! I'm prepared to REALLY like these guys. You Go Boooeeeeee.
