I had the bad luck to be stuck waiting at venues a couple times due to weird weather-related cancellations of his shows back in the '80s, and I despaired until I finally got to see TAJ at Chautauqua Auditorium in '92. What a magnificent human being and gifted musician he is! I also love that Syd Barrett once cited him as an inspiration and influence, too!
Taj Mahal was an ambassador for "world music" before "world music" was a thing.

#Pioneer
Saw him in Rockport MA in a beautiful venue, second row center, that had a beautiful view of the harbor. Taj and his dudes where the best!

After Taj's song, songs from Stevie Wonder, Queens of the Stone Age, Bonnie Raitt and then the Pixies came on. RP is so wickedly frickin pissah!

Spoke to Taj Mahal on the phone once about getting involved with Ocean Conservation!
What a gracious and cool man he is!
Thanks R.P for playing his music as much as you do!

I keep thinking the main riff is from a Jimmy Buffett tune I can't place....or some other tune I can't place...in either case, now I'm going to be searching my mental database for it for the rest of the day.  Ugh.

I hear traces of Bruce Cockburn's Wondering Where The Lions Are
Very pretty tune!
This song makes me sad that the rating scale on RP goes only to 10, I'd give it at least a 100!

Still great, but where has the time gone.

Feels like songs to sit outside with a fire going at about 58-59 degrees
Just got back from Naples, FL about two hours ago. This music makes me want to go back there and then head further south.
I love when psd gives me some Taj   : )
A welcome break from debugging code. Gack!
Love Taj!

for a treat look up his "Cajun Waltz".

Why does this tune remind me of Penguin Cafe Orchestra?

Wow, what a set:

Taj Mahal - When I Feel The Sea Beneath My Soul

Harry Manx - Only Then Will Your House Be Blessed

Eels - Packing Blankets

Crosby Stills & Nash - Southern Cross

Getting this set again and it is perfection.
great tune
I was having the same sentiment, enjoying the next song in the lineup too:
Paul Simon - Once Upon A Time There Was An Ocean - adds to the sweetness of a Friday afternoon.

Rule #1
Never bring your HOT girlfriend backstage to meet a musician!!!!!

Yes he´s the man, this one goes right into your/mine heart.

Mmmmmm!  Taj - 'tis mighty, mighty fine!  {#Good-vibes}

And just like that, I'm on the beach watching my kids playing in the surf while I get buzzed drinking pain killers. Mmmmmmmmm.....

My thoughts EXACTLY!
35 years ago I first heard West Indian Revelation (also on this compilation), which I loved but never knew who or what it was until just last year. So I uploaded it to the LRC and it's currently in review to get on this playlist. Any signed-on RP member who wants to hear it here, vote {YES} for my long-lost treasure! Thanks!

Thanks for that Bill!!!! I'm a big fan of Taj. Just ordered that box set. Anyone know what Taj has been doing lately?
That's gotta be Ry Cooder. Anyone with the liner notes able to verify?
Does this riff sound familiar to anyone else? I'm thinking Guabi Guabi by Pork Tornado.
Great song, and this 3-CD set has plenty of good Taj stuff in it. Some odd choices sometimes - rare live versions of some tunes - but some wonderful old cuts like this one. I've also been a big Taj fan since De Old Folks at Home... he just goes on and on.

May we one day live in a world where this *is* what they play in elevators.

This was originally on an album called "Music Keeps Me Together" released in 1975 - very Caribbean-oriented sound throughout the entire disc. I have great memories of it wafting out of the speakers on fine spring days...when I was supposed to be studying...
Thanks for the tip, I'll have to pick that up. His father was a musician from the bahamas, so it's in his blood.

HAHAH, that made my day!
I love this song and the World Music Album. I have trouble finding Taj's island music, which i prefer to the blues. Turn it up.

I wish this would be the kind of music they play on such occasions ...

It's hard to describe how Taj Mahal's music feels to me overall, but this piece just has movement and life to it. Perhaps that's how to describe his work. Above all else, he does very human music.....fallible but always interesting.
