For a girl I know it's Mother's Day
Here son has gone alee
And that's where he will stay
Wind on the weathervane
Tearing blue eyes sailor-mean
As Falstaff sings a sorrowful refrain
For a boy in Fiddler's Green
His tiny knotted heart
Well, I guess it never worked too good
The timber tore apart
And the water gorged the wood
You can hear her whispered prayer
For men at masts that always lean
That the same wind that moves her hair
Moves a boy through Fiddler's Green
He doesn't know a soul
And there's nowhere that he's really been
But he won't travel long alone
No, not in Fiddler's Green
Balloons all filled with rain
As children's eyes turn sleepy-mean
And Falstaff sings a sorrowful refrain
For a boy in Fiddler's Green
I miss this man.
In Gord We Trust
Those of us Canadians who are not inclined towards all the implications of national pride are not as proud as others, but Gord was indeed a one of a kind talent. I have also cried over losing him. So, we have things in common. And luckily, we also have all the music he left us.. as Falstaff sings a sorrowful refrain..

The Cavalrymen's Poem, also entitled "Fiddlers' Green" was published in the US Army's Cavalry Journal in 1923 and became associated with the 1st Cavalry Division.[10]
Halfway down the trail to Hell in a shady meadow green,
are the Souls of all dead troopers camped near a good old-time canteen,
and this eternal resting place is known as Fiddlers' Green.
Marching past, straight through to Hell, the Infantry are seen,
accompanied by the Engineers, Artillery and Marine,
for none but the shades of Cavalrymen dismount at Fiddlers' Green.
Though some go curving down the trail to seek a warmer scene,
no trooper ever gets to Hell ere he's emptied his canteen
and so rides back to drink again with friends at Fiddlers' Green.
And so when man and horse go down beneath a saber keen,
or in a roaring charge fierce melee you stop a bullet clean,
and the hostiles come to get your scalp,
just empty your canteen and put your pistol to your head
and go to Fiddlers' Green.
Such a great song....
I miss this man.
Such a great song....
Yep, sometimes I can't get thru it when i play it on my guitar either.
Love Radio Paradise! I've heard several songs on here this week that I love that are sort of obscure. Not saying this is obscure. I like it. It has truly been Paradise for my ears since I subscribed and started listening. I love the mixes!!!
Me too!
There are 2 kinds of people: those who like Rush and those who don't.
Which one are you Bill?
Rush would much better serve for Canadian content, although we have room for both bands.
This is the story behind this song, by the way: https://mysendoff.com/2014/05/...
Thanks Gord.
Here's to the rest of the boys. Hip. Forever.
So beautiful.
Should there by any ratings by American folks, they should be adjusted up by one (9=10) for parity purposes.

Nope, no one-legged flautists here.
miss you so much, Cynaera... love this song...
They are still great. Last two albums had lots of gems.
OH my ... thoughts come rushing in of being at a wake of my childhood friend who died in a car crash in my hometown on the central coast of BC. We were in the local watering hole, we had all come back from Vancouver and points east to say goodbye to our friend... I remember driving back that night to Vancouver and didnt want to get out of the car when pulling into the ferry, I was still in my suit and sat in my little Rabbit with this song playing on the deck. I remember balling my eyes out thinking of him and playing street hockey, kick the can, talking about the girls getting boobs ... How a song can bring back thoughts - Thanks so very much Bill for that - its almost 15 years ago now.
This is a wonderful tribute to your friend. Thanks for sharing it.
"Tune in to Hockey Night In Canada, at the end of the pre-game show (Saturday May 12th), around 7:30pm ET, for the world premiere of our new single At Transformation."

A mother buried her child. the part of a cemetery reserved for the young is often referred to as 'Fiddler's Green' - a passage to a better place.

If you like this slowish tune, you may like Bobcaygeon, Wheat Kings, 38 Years Old. But Fiddler's Green definitely has a more Celtic / Maritime feel to it that is not so prevalent in their other stuff.
love the Hip, esp the ALL the songs you listed up there.
Nope, no one-legged flautists here.
...about four minutes or so.

Third album:
Tragically Hip - self-titled (edit: best song off this one was probably Highway Girl, and maybe Small Town Bringdown)

HIP HIP HIP!
I love this music. Shows that some country playing can be good for the ears.....Maybe this is more bluegrass/folk and not country, per say.
If you've ever seen the Hip, you would say rock n roll. This is just one of their slow tunes.

Agreed! May we have more?
