Fare you well, my honey, fare you well my only true one.
All the birds that were singing are flown, except you alone.
Going to leave this brokedown palace,
On my hand and knees, I will roll, roll, roll.
Make myself a bed in the waterside,
In my time, I will roll, roll roll.
Make myself a bed by the waterside I will lay my head.
Listen to the river sing sweet songs, to rock my soul.
River going to take me, sing sweet and sleepy,
Sing me sweet and sleepy all the way back home.
Its a far gone lullaby, sung many years ago.
Mama, mama many worlds I've come since I first left home.
Goin home, goin home, by the riverside I will rest my bones,
Listen to the river sing sweet songs, to rock my soul.
Going to plant a weeping willow,
On the banks green edge it will grow, grow, grow.
Sing a lullaby beside the water,
Lovers come and go, the river roll, roll, roll.
Fare you well, fare you well, I love you more than words can tell,
Listen to the river sing sweet songs, to rock my soul.
All the birds that were singing are flown, except you alone.
Going to leave this brokedown palace,
On my hand and knees, I will roll, roll, roll.

Just let me sway to her voice............
Always hoped she would join Dead and Company for a few tunes. Maybe next year!

Like her voice a lot!
Initially thought that it was Chrissie Hynde singing, but then I noticed that she really can sing.
and now I have another reason that I admire this artist :)

She does OK with this gem. Not nearly as good as the original. The original is from what I consider one of the Dead's two best albums.
What's "the other one"?
Jerry didnt do it Better. Joan Owns it!

Good song, and I'm happy that other artists realize the importance of the songs the GD wrote and yes, I inc. Robert Hunter in that. But love this song. Always think of this as Jerry's farewell song. He's still rockin my soul.

Love the way the drums are recorded on this song.
Play some Dead already, enough of these too perfect covers. Yea yea, Lyle Lovett can play dead too.

Thank you for that.
Just sublime
Just sublime
Beautiful cover.
Not sure why but this version irritates me. Perhaps I identify too much with the original.
Saw Joan this week with Mavis Staples. Spectacular and drop-dead sexy! And Mavis was great too.
This is one of the most sublime Dead covers I've heard. It sounds perfect to this head!
Meh, the vocals dont fit the beautiful music and lyrics.
Best of both worlds....Jerry and Joan. Thanks RP. Please play more Joan.
So stylized as to drain any real feeling from this beautiful song. Instrumentals are lovely, though.
Uhhhhh....... no.
No. Just...No..
Is this as bad as Merchant covering Bowie?
Both choices are intolerable.
Nice treat Bill..
Joan is awesome.
Jerry plz.

Blah. No really - blah.
I saw Joan live doing a few Dead tunes. Was absolutely amazing... nothing like this overproduced stuff, although I give it a high rating just because it's Joan <3

A soulful rendition of one of Jerry's "anthems".....if any woman is gonna sing it, I think he'd be happy to sit back and listen to Joan.
Yea, this is pretty good.

NOOO... make it stop. Just play some dead already!
Under rated: bumping up for one of Jerry and The Boys of Summer's best. Always brings tears to my eyes...

Well done Joan! Great version of this great tune.
I forget just how good a vocalist Joan Osborne is. Great cover of a classic.

very nice...and I'm very picky about dead covers. This works on all levels.

What a singer this girl is. I'd heard her doing a few songs on R.P. I caught her on TV on The Transatlantic Sessions (BBC Scotland), what a wonderfull singer. I'll be buying, even if it's just the aforementioned Sessions.(3 CDs apparently)For anyone interested, I haven't seen all of the programs, missed most to be honest, but I've seen Joanie, Eddie Reeder, Jerry Douglas, Russ Barenberg,Emmylou,Ally Bain, and many more. ......... Check it out.
I usually don't say this but, great cover. She makes it her own.
how did this song get through LRC?
terrible.
Joan was outstanding when she toured with the Dead a few years ago. Too bad the studio version lost some of the beauty.

Well said. This is a great summary of how I feel about his voice too, and something that lots of Dead-dissers seem to miss. This song, or when he hits the "dust off those dusty strings just one more time" in Stella Blue: so much emotion in a delicate scratchy voice.

I don't get that with her. She has a beautiful voice, but the emotion isn't the same.
I havent heard much dead, or Jerry, but I would agree about the pretty voice but a lack of feeling being communicated. I get the same vibes from a lot of the "Divas" of the past 10-20 years. You can sing? You're not bad looking? Gee, wow. We havent seen that before...(cough cough cough)
---------------------------
2/7/07--I prefer other stuff on this album that I've heard on RP. To each his/her own.
It's ok. It's pretty, but it's kinda dry. Doesn't move me like the original. 5.
blech...
It's not her best stuff, but it was decent enough for me to get this album and I find myself adding it to the play list (when im not listening to RP) quite frequently. Solid.
Odd that RP doesn't have a version of this by either the Grateful Dead or Jerry Garcia! ...or anyone else...

It was a treat to see Osborne singing with Phil Lesh & Friends last summer (tho this song wasn't performed). Lesh brings more refinement and expertise than ever to the improvisational interplay he helped pioneer with the Dead.
RP Needs to play more Culture Club. Yep. And maybe some Whitney Houston, for good measure...

While I like this version, I agree with you on this. Maybe this is the Geezer phenotype revealing itself, but to me Jerry seems to reach a little deeper on this.
What if god were one of us?

I agree, but would say that normally Joan Osborne DOES bring a lot of emotion to her singing. Maybe it just seems like she is singing someone else's song, not her own.
Sorry, Joan, but this doesn't pass the Mugro Doctrine of Covers test....

I just signed in to say exactly the opposite. This is sooooo much better than the Dead. I like the Dead, but this is better. EDIT: excuse folks. Just scrolled down to see I made the same comment earlier. Just shows how much I like this version, I suppose
Beautiful. Love this. Can't say enough about it.
i'd listen to her sing anything...

It's like the difference between hearing Streisand sing "Somewhere" and hearing Tom Waits sing "Somewhere".
I remember a skit they did on SNL featuring Ray Charles back in 1977. Charles was hired to play piano to back up a group called "The Young Caucasians" performing "What'd I Say". It was a smart lampooning of the "vanilla" versions of soul and R&B songs being covered by white artists like the Everly Brothers who expressed little emotional connection to the words they were singing.
To drive home the point, Ray sung his own version of the song, much to the delight of the audience.

I hate to break it to you, but being on the radio isn't necessarily the measure of good music.
Looking forward to her new stuff.
Beautiful hearfelt rendition by Joan here
I had no idea Joan did this, wow. I saw her a few years ago on tour with the Dead.
The very idea sounded odd to me. After I actually saw and heard them together, I was blown away by the combination of her voice and the sounds of our beloved "Other Ones". She really surprised a lot of folks.
Oh and, rest in peace Jerry.
not feeling it today...
Its ok, but it lacks the feeling that Jerry's world-weary voice brought to this song
I see my light come shining

I shall be released

I like Joan Osborne's voice a lot. She sings with such a passion and talent, which is quiet hard to find in most singers today.
Thanks for playing this, Bill!
a nice rendering of this standard into joan's more soul-oriented style.
not so sure it's the timing, but finding a convincing vocal line is tricky here; in the orginial the wonky harmonies add lots of dimension.
good work, little Joanie!

I dunno. I've always thought the Dead version of this (at least the studio version) was curiously lifeless and mechanical-sounding.
Not this one. Not at all.
Nice, but I don't think that you can do a bad version of this song. The Wild Colonials did a cool one a few years ago too.
Oh yea and miss Jerry too.
