When the night shows
the signals grow on radios
All the strange things
they come and go, as early warnings
Stranded starfish have no place to hide
still waiting for the swollen Easter tide
There's no point in direction we cannot
even choose a side.

I took the old track
the hollow shoulder, across the waters
On the tall cliffs
they were getting older, sons and daughters
The jaded underworld was riding high
Waves of steel hurled metal at the sky
and as the nail sunk in the cloud, the rain
was warm and soaked the crowd.

Lord, here comes the flood
We'll say goodbye to flesh and blood
If again the seas are silent
in any still alive
It'll be those who gave their island to survive
Drink up, dreamers, you're running dry.

When the flood calls
You have no home, you have no walls
In the thunder crash
You're a thousand minds, within a flash
Don't be afraid to cry at what you see
The actors gone, there's only you and me
And if we break before the dawn, they'll
use up what we used to be.

Lord, here comes the flood
We'll say goodbye to flesh and blood
If again the seas are silent
in any still alive
It'll be those who gave their island to survive
Drink up, dreamers, you're running dry.

You're killing me hearing this after the awful tragedy in TX.
Amazing song, great version - but my favourite version is still the one from Robert Fripp's Exposure album.

I guess the only difference at this point between Peter Gabriel and Elbow is Peter's exaggerated vocal fry.  Though once Elbow Guy copies that too, we'll just never know which is which.

So funny that I keep reading this comparison...I have always loved Gabriel's voice...and I can't stand that Elbow guy's!

The slideshow played along with this one brought a few tears 😥
What an incredible artist. I played "Wallflower" for my Mom when she was dying. We just cried until we ran dry.
Wow... i did not know that one and it just hit me like a .. well like a wave. Amazing song!
Heard this version in 1993 as the 3rd encore of the evening.

Apparently a different version than the one on his first solo album?

Yes, this is a much more recent version.

Both the electric and piano versions of this are amazing. Solid 10. I saw him perform this years ago on the UP tour near Detroit. Played the piano version. Just breathtaking.
I was gonna say nice deep cut... I'm surprised this is on a hits album (never got it since I have all the originals). Never heard this version before. I do miss the big part

Beautiful vocals . . . . Though I do miss the dramatic refrain in the version I am more familiar with.

I agree. Beautiful song, but I kept waiting for the noisy bit. Still a 10.

A timeless classic, a beautiful, simple song.  A solid 10.
Brilliant.
Absolutely inspired.
Thank you PSD - so stunningly beautiful.  {#Music}
