Livin' in the meadow
The mighty, mighty meadow
With too many people
Suckin' all the water
And my daddy was a farmer
He was a racecar driver
He is a four leaf clover
He is the next messiah

Now he's living in the woods
The dark and dank woods
With a cocktail waitress
Who thinks she's an artist
Take it down to the river
Split it right up the middle
Now it's gonna be trouble
For a pregnant lamb and a con man

Now he's sick in the clink
With his head in the sink
And the tumor gonna make a
Man outta him
Now, my daddy was a chancer
He was a bad-check bouncer
But he beat that cancer
He's a survivor

He's the next messiah
He's the next messiah
He's the next messiah
He's the next messiah

Covering it up
Squeezing it out
Watching it bleed
You're watching it all
Taking it back
She's down on her knees
When did she come to detest you?

Giving it back
Backing you up
Nothing's for free
You're giving it back
For locking you up
Those terrible deeds
When will they come to arrest you?
When did she come to detest you?

When will they come to arrest you?
When did she come to detest you?

I'm gonna give my love to you on a day you gotta bring it back
I'm gonna give my love to you on a day you gotta bring it back
(I want to tell you I love you) I'm gonna give my love to you
(I want to tell you I love you) on a day you gotta bring it back
(I want to tell you I love you) I'm gonna give my love to you
(I want to tell you I love you) on a day you gotta bring it back

I want to tell you I love you
I want to tell you I love you
(I'm gonna go out walking baby) I want to tell you I love you
(Better be here when I get back) I want to tell you I love you
(I'm gonna go out walking baby) I want to tell you I love you
(Better be here when I get back) I want to tell you I love you

I'm gonna give my love to you on a day you gotta bring it back
I'm gonna give my love to you on a day you gotta bring it back
I want to tell you I love you
I want to tell you I love you

He's the next messiah
He's the next messiah
He's the next messiah
He's the next messiah

She's just so much fun whatever she's involved with.
“Now he's living in the woods
The dark and dank woods”
Leaves little doubt that this song truly is about the moose-iah.

Great imagery in these lyrics!
Picking up on some John Lennon dobro on this one.

Love this song

i love this!

this is my fav of hers. the whole album is great. i liked rilo kiley well enough, but this was what made me a huge fan of jenny's.
"The Next Moo-siah", a playful riff on rural ballads about a father who's lived a life like a patchwork quilt at a county fair. A farmer-turned-racecar driver, yet branded as the rural redeemer, the 'moo-siah' of the pastures. His life's a barnyard opera, complete with environmental woes, love affairs with cocktail-waitress-muses, and a stint in the clinker, while beating cancer and wrangling calamities. The chorus has a less-than-holy refrain of love given and demanded back, while betrayal lurks like a wolf in the hen house. It's a testimony to a life that's half mess, half miracle: an ode to a man who's less messianic savior and more a miraculous survivor of his own fabled life.

I have to say it is actually a pretty good track.

Well try another mix or donate so you can play favorites, I've listened for 10 or more years, and they have enriched my life by exposing me to so much "new" music even if its older. Love RP that is why I donate. Long Live RP

This woman has talent.
Love this tune. 7>8.
The moose parts of this piece are much preferable, to me.
First time hearing this. Surprised by the hate.  I love it!

Moose eye oh? We haven't had any moose sightings over here.
It is a rather long, pointless song.
Thanks Bill.  Didn't know Jenny Lewis or Rilo Kiley until I started listening to RP but one of my favourites now - a great back catalogue of Jenny and Rilo Kiley albums to explore and enjoy!

only 8 1/2 minutes....what's the problem...

This song kicks.  The album is good all around, and Jonathan Rice's contributions are great.
Tasty tune with a savory flavor -- leaves a slight but pleasant after taste.

7 for me.  Then again, I'm a sucker for those low-note chords.  Morphine -ish.
This doesn't improve with familiarity.

Or repetition.
Like it...the end of the tune starts to sound like The Kills a bit...

I don't know... the way she and Blake Sennett seemed to riff off of one another in their song writing, to me, made the sum greater than the two (her solo and with various collaborators and him with The Elected) apart.  It added a depth to Rilo Kiley that is not there with the other efforts.  Admittedly, she has done better since the parting but I'm hoping we see them come back together some day.

Of course, all of this is probably true of most bands where the component parts went on to solo careers.

Ok, this is growing on me.

I was wondering what everyone was going on about, and then the song changed.... I see now {and it reminds me to have the hubris to wait until the end of the track before commenting}.  Not sure it's a bad as many are making out though.  there are many 'classics' by certain people/bands that are far worse than this! a 5 or 6 for now.

It was horribly repetitive.  I understand that an ostinato is a valid musical device, but the verses (and therefore any interesting content) got buried under it...got real tired of this song really quickly.

Best deal on iTunes - a 9 minute song that's actually several songs in one. Thanks, Jenny! {#Bananapiano}
