I'm coming up only to hold you under
I'm coming up only to show you wrong
And to know you is hard and we wonder
To know you all wrong we were
Ooo Ooo

Really too late to call so we wait for
Morning to wake you is all we got
To know me as hardly golden
Is to know me all wrong they were

At every occasion I'll be ready for the funeral
At every occasion once more it's called the funeral
At every occasion oh I'm ready for the funeral
At every occasion of one billion day funeral

I am coming up only to show you down a floor
I am coming up only to show you wrong
To the outside
The dead leaves, they are alone
Before they died, they had trees to hang their home
Ooo Ooo

At every occasion I will be ready for the funeral
At every occasion once more it's called the funeral
At every occasion oh I'm ready for the funeral
At every occasion of one billion day funeral

ironic this plays while searching a cemetery plot where my parents are buried.

ironic this plays on the day I'm going to a funeral.

I read this comment every time RP plays this song.  And every single time I tear up.  How do words do that?

I'm told sound is the first sense that works, even in the womb. So new babies recognize their parents' voices.  And it is the last sense to leave us when we die. Even people in comas (who later woke up) can often recall specific conversations others had with them, not knowing if they were heard or not. In my father's last hours he couldn't speak or move much but he could hear and nod yes or no. Even when hypoxic our vision, balance, cognitive ability and other senses fail but we can hear. Sound perception seems to be wired into us at a very fundamental level.  Very young children who can't speak respond to music. I've seen autistic people moved by music that sings to the heart. All dogs respond to calming talk and some respond quite dramatically to music. It touches us at some very deep level. That's why I listen to it and attempt to perform it.

Don't be too hasty. I rejected the comparison at first but now believe the OP makes a valid point. Without Wakeman on keys and Howe on guitar, Band of Horses could be a legitimate heir to prog rock greatness. The vocals do suggest Anderson and arrangement is not unfamiliar. Stands on the shoulders of giants.

perhaps they wrote it for Danny Mackaskill as they watched him practice to do these amazing stunts? watched the video and shook my head smiling...how many injuries sustained until it works (does he have any testicles left?!). incredible

Also instantly thought of that awesome video, haven't seen it for years but watched it over and over again at the time :)

But yeah, I have similar more emotional links with certain songs as well like you describe, but that's also the beauty of music, I always try to just embrace that wild moment of pure emotion :) (although it can be somewhat inconvenient if they play it at the local supermarket or something :P)

The answer is all brain chemistry, an explanation of which would not do justice to your beautiful memory. Thanks for sharing.
Nice!

What's happened to these guys, have they lost direction or their creative juices? The first albums were so great, saw them in Sydney. What a show....the later stuff has left me non plussed to be honest....
Brilliant song! More BOH please!
Nothing wrong with that.

Danny MacAskill is a mad genius on the bike.

Better than the real lyrics, which seem to be a crazy,  depressing jumble of Mad Lib words.
Man! Those things look awesome!!
As my lovely volcanologist friend would say 'at every occasion I'm ready for the fumerole'.  You don't want one of those buggers catching you unawares.

Perfect.  Not miserable any more.

This seems to be one of those bands totally reliant on one instrument for its sound.  In this case the amazing voice.  I think the total centrality of the high-pitched, melodic vocals is why they seem so much like the Beach Boys, even though they're so different in every other way.  I cannot get enough of Detlev Schrempf.  The song not the basketball player.
Depressing, morbid...? Check out Patty Griffin... Long Ride Home. One never really know what inspired a song unless one admits... I love Music... and just like politics... not linear... As I type... Dead Can Dance comes on!  Fuckingroovin!

But ... wtf is this song about?

WTF indeed
Gawd, what a depressing song/thought. Even worse, tried to get Alexa to skip it, but initially she just outright refused, with some lameass excuse about "can't skip a stream" (rather than a song). Does not bode well for not receiving bad news out of the blue on such a winter's day.

Neither here nor there, but one of the teens stole my Band of Horses tee shirt, and I'm just in a really pissy mood now.

There's a local beer in Cincinnati called "Hudephol."  The first time I heard this one, I thought they were singing, "On every occasion I am ready for a Hudephol."  Seemed awfully slow and dark for a beer commercial.
So...this isn't Ruby Falls by Guster. Hunh, fooled me at first.
"(Nothing But) Flowers" This used to be real estate.

This is a straight 10 for me (wouldn't mind hearing The Great Salt Lake more often either!).

Totally agree.  First two were great then they seemed to lose it a bit.
While their rawness is vital to their sound, I REALLY wish I had drummed on this track and cleaned it up just a bit. Maybe added a touch of flair.

I know that's cocky, but I can't help it.

Really sad for all the people who come here just to shit on music that other people enjoy. Bill doesn't play very much that I don't like, but when he does, I just hit PSD and move on. If you liked everything you heard and everything sounded familiar, wouldn't you stop bothering to listen out of sheer boredom?

Midnight Oil - Dead Heart
Band of Horses - The Funeral
John Lennon - Instant Karma

"You better get yourself together"

Makes me wonder sometimes.

Indeed; there are probably thousands of songs which could also show how much one can do by "starting with a simple arpeggio". "Stairway To Heaven" comes to mind (unfortunately).
Simply outstanding!
Reminds me a little of the Samples.
Bonus point for the super-cool album cover.

Don't mistake the coincidental for the marvellous, to paraphrase Jean Cocteau. Although synchronicity is a good look.

As always, I had to go and watch the Danny McCaskil video as the two are totally linked in my brain. I like the song, I am truly amazed at the Scotsman's skills
It's like some guys were sitting around wasted watching Clint Eastwood's movie "Invictus" and one of them said "hey man, the theme song from this would sound cool with electric guitars and new words sung like the guy from Rush" except this came out 3 years before the movie did. They were ahead of their time.
