I'm coming up only to show you wrong
And to know you is hard and we wonder
To know you all wrong we were
Ooo Ooo
Really too late to call so we wait for
Morning to wake you is all we got
To know me as hardly golden
Is to know me all wrong they were
At every occasion I'll be ready for the funeral
At every occasion once more it's called the funeral
At every occasion oh I'm ready for the funeral
At every occasion of one billion day funeral
I am coming up only to show you down a floor
I am coming up only to show you wrong
To the outside
The dead leaves, they are alone
Before they died, they had trees to hang their home
Ooo Ooo
At every occasion I will be ready for the funeral
At every occasion once more it's called the funeral
At every occasion oh I'm ready for the funeral
At every occasion of one billion day funeral
The first time I heard this track was on a Danny MacAskill street trials YouTube video. One of my last memories of my Dad was one golden afternoon when I'd shown him the video, and he asked me to play it for him over and over.
I can't hear this song without remembering that time with my Dad now. How does music do that?
I read this comment every time RP plays this song. And every single time I tear up. How do words do that?

I'm told sound is the first sense that works, even in the womb. So new babies recognize their parents' voices. And it is the last sense to leave us when we die. Even people in comas (who later woke up) can often recall specific conversations others had with them, not knowing if they were heard or not. In my father's last hours he couldn't speak or move much but he could hear and nod yes or no. Even when hypoxic our vision, balance, cognitive ability and other senses fail but we can hear. Sound perception seems to be wired into us at a very fundamental level. Very young children who can't speak respond to music. I've seen autistic people moved by music that sings to the heart. All dogs respond to calming talk and some respond quite dramatically to music. It touches us at some very deep level. That's why I listen to it and attempt to perform it.
What a flippant world we live in
NO.
Don't be too hasty. I rejected the comparison at first but now believe the OP makes a valid point. Without Wakeman on keys and Howe on guitar, Band of Horses could be a legitimate heir to prog rock greatness. The vocals do suggest Anderson and arrangement is not unfamiliar. Stands on the shoulders of giants.
This GIF is not Band of Horses.
This is actually the from the band Real Estate's video for the song Darling.
And now I will step away from the screen.
lol
WTF indeed
perhaps they wrote it for Danny Mackaskill as they watched him practice to do these amazing stunts? watched the video and shook my head smiling...how many injuries sustained until it works (does he have any testicles left?!). incredible

Also instantly thought of that awesome video, haven't seen it for years but watched it over and over again at the time :)
But yeah, I have similar more emotional links with certain songs as well like you describe, but that's also the beauty of music, I always try to just embrace that wild moment of pure emotion :) (although it can be somewhat inconvenient if they play it at the local supermarket or something :P)

The answer is all brain chemistry, an explanation of which would not do justice to your beautiful memory. Thanks for sharing.

This song was used as the backing track to a YouTube video called "Inspired Bicycles - Danny MacAskill April 2009" with him doing amazing stunts on a BMX bike in Edinburgh, Scotland. Look it up if you like to see what can be done on a bicycle if you have no fear!
Danny MacAskill is a mad genius on the bike.
Better than the real lyrics, which seem to be a crazy, depressing jumble of Mad Lib words.
Man! Those things look awesome!!
Perfect. Not miserable any more.
But ... wtf is this song about?
WTF indeed
Neither here nor there, but one of the teens stole my Band of Horses tee shirt, and I'm just in a really pissy mood now.

I have not seen this one, guess it was before 16:9 was popular.
Danny MacAsskill
It was the vid that introduced me to BOHs... for a change. Nearly all my music intros over the last 8 years have been from RP... Stunning stuff, both the band and Danny's antics.

I was thinking more of the Beach Boys with a harder, more rocking sound.
NO.
From the horse's mouth:
Lead singer Ben Bridwell says he didn’t intend the song to be deep, and wrote about how birthdays and family occasions felt like funerals to him, but fans have found plenty of meaning in the word play. Whatever the story, it evokes a sad and reflective mood as the singer visits someone and contemplates if they will be alive when he gets there.
I bet he's loads of fun to be around.
This is a straight 10 for me (wouldn't mind hearing The Great Salt Lake more often either!).
Totally agree. First two were great then they seemed to lose it a bit.
I know that's cocky, but I can't help it.

I can only imagine that you heard the word "funeral" and assumed each line was the same. But that's objectively incorrect.

The new opiate of the masses?
BOC - Don't fear the reaper
Midnight Oil - Dead Heart
Band of Horses - The Funeral
John Lennon - Instant Karma
"You better get yourself together"
Makes me wonder sometimes.

Just looked at the lyrics. I love this song but the lyrics are nearly unfathomable!

Indeed; there are probably thousands of songs which could also show how much one can do by "starting with a simple arpeggio". "Stairway To Heaven" comes to mind (unfortunately).
solid maximum for me, as it reminds me to their wonderful live acts :)
Agreed that this track gets a little more air than it should, but it grows on me each time I hear it.
I get the same feeling listening to Band or Horses as I do for My Morning Jacket... akin to a somber, low-fi, meaningful, yet expectant hopeful experience.
Spot on! There's a few tracks I really like to hear 5-6 times a month and this is one, and MMJ's Something about screaming part 2 is another.
And of course, now in You Tube watching Danny Magaskill again!!
After reading the lyrics, I too need someone to explain this song!
Hahahahaaaa - funny!

I wasn't drunk....I just wanted to hear this song!
Don't mistake the coincidental for the marvellous, to paraphrase Jean Cocteau. Although synchronicity is a good look.
I plan to be late for mine.

same.
He could play it daily, like normal OTA radio stations. Try the PSD button if you haven't.
Oh it's all good, I have only heard this song once, but that was enough.
I like this version of the song but Serena Ryder and the Beauties does an even better version.

Same here; it was my introduction to the song, so that's what I see when I hear it.
But they sound nothing like Fleet Foxes!
Yes, but the Foxes at least produce interesting song structure and harmonies, these guys...well........zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
They don't sound like they can produce enough testosterone to grow beards is my guess.

ironic this plays while searching a cemetery plot where my parents are buried.
