I count myself pretty discerning and unmoved by phony sentiments, but I love this song. In my 77 years I have been a journalist, entertainment pr guy and consultant to organizations on both sides of the Atlantic. 

Its sentiments are sometimes a bit on the nose but heartfelt. It always brings real emotion to me. I hope my family remembers my love for it and plays it at my funeral because I could never write anything as good as this to sum up my feelings in life.

Yeah things like that catch you out of the blue. Reet Petite, Jackie Wilson and the Housemartins version of Caravan of Love bring back happy memories but sadness of the loss. 12 years now for me but there's still a life to be lived. She will always be with you.

My thoughts on the subject:
Music snobs are exactly that -  Snobs. 
Music is music. 
You don't like country? Great.
You don't like jazz? Great.
Don't like this band or that singer? Great.
Who cares?
Music snobbery makes no sense to me and possibly annoys me a bit!
Music is music.

I'm sorry for your loss.  I experienced the same loss 19 years ago and certain songs and memories can hit me hard when I least expect it.  Things get better and life moves on and the pain lessens but it never goes away.

Wow, I'm a moderate PJ fan, some of their songs I absolutely love (Black, Yellow Ledbetter, etc.) and I fell in love with Eddie Vedder's voice and solo work through the Dead Man Walking soundtrack (if you don't know his duets with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, you don't know what you're missing!)... BUT, I'm shocked I never knew Pearl Jam did this song- I thought it was Willie Nelson's! I heard Willie's version when it came out in 2012 and fell instantly in love with it, put it on a mix for the wife, and have happily listened to it countless times since, and now along comes RP (haven't been hangin' with y'all in a while) and it doesn't take long to learn something new with Mr. Bill, does it?
Personal preference, I do prefer Willie's version (it's soft, tender and sweeter), but I always appreciate knowing the proper origin of a song and hearing it sung from the artists that wrote it. Thank you! If you like this song, check out Willie's version!

It's a great post but I don't completely agree.

I've never had a problem with people posting song criticisms with explanations or justifications, something that sheds a little light on their opinion, even if it's contrary to my own.

What I never understand are the posts that just say "sucks" or "barfo" and that's it.  Like, what are you supposed to do with that information?  Spacedog769 thinks Moondance sucks - duly noted.  I don't get the point of these pans that, with no clarification or cleverness, that just kind of say "I'm here and I don't like it".  Maybe it's kind of a release valve that makes people feel better after hearing a song they don't like?

You nailed it - this song is capable of evoking feelings and sensations in me that are normally only triggered by nature.  The combination of this song and the scenery along the Highway 20 drive are a perfect pairing!  Oh, how I miss the Wood River Valley!

I don't understand it. I respect their opinions, but oh, to read them...especially when they're aimed at a song I like (this is MY opinion, and I'm not speaking for the masses here) makes me wonder if I'm lacking somehow. Maybe I missed the memo that said "Hate this song - attack this song - attack this artist and everything he/she has ever done." Maybe I don't belong here. I love the music played here, even if at times I don't understand it and can't embrace it. It's still music, and I'm grateful for it. I fear there will come a time when we won't have music at all, and we'll have to remember all the songs we've heard here - for good or for bad - and call upon them when we'd otherwise have empty air fit only for breathing and not for grabbing wonderful music from out of the everywhere into the here.

Was Pearl Jam ever really "grunge"? I mean, if they weren't from Seattle, nobody would have lumped their music in stylistically with Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, etc. Disclosure: I'm a big PJ fan.

Boys got an East Coast tour lined up for spring and I'm hoping for tickets to a few shows.

Picked up the CD the day before leaving on vacation and played it on the rental car CD player driving across Idaho with my wife and daughter.  After this song finished I looked over at my wife and we were both puddled up.

More like a middle aged guy who deeply loves his wife and decided to write an adult love song.

And the bands fans, male and female (especially female) many of whom have been with them since Ten, love singing along with this one, especially the beautiful chorus.
