It's not about levels. Too-high levels on digital gear lead to hard clipping, which is not what's happening here. This is a deliberate effect, via either digital effects plugins or outboard analog gear, that aims to emulate the sound of old analog recordings & vinyl records, by recreating the specific types of distortion that gear produced. It's an artistic choice.

I agree that it sounds like shit, at least when overdone. I'd love to unload on DM some time about that Michael Kiwanuka record...

Surprisingly little to dislike about this particular song by TBK. That stodgy production isn't completely absent, but it's not horrible.

I'm not sure if it's (just) Danger Mouse; it seems like you hear that distorted/muffled bass and drums on most things Dan Auerbach touches as well.  It's clearly done on purpose; for some reason they both seem to like that sound.

These guys lost all my respect by how they handled Steve Miller's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  The Black Keys acted like a couple of spoiled brats.  Go into obscurity, losers.

This doesn't seem like the sort of band that The Garden would suit very well; they're essentially a 'garage' duo.  The Beacon would seem a more fitting venue for these guys, if not someplace smaller.

Saw these guys last weekend in Charlotte, NC (with the Arctic Monkeys). Excellent show, DEFINITELY worth checking out if they play at a town close by.

I'm surprised that the several songs I've heard from this album (all on RP, to be sure) have been "keepers" as far as I'm concerned. Surprised because I didn't know this was a group I'd bother to investigate. Having heard several of the songs, this is an album I consider buying - and through the RP affiliate link, of course! {#Mrgreen}

What I don't see is the connection between Otis Redding and AC/DC.  Am I missing something?  I have Otis Redding on vinyl and CD.  Did AC/DC possess any sort of funk, and I just didn't hear it?  Could be my bias against those screechy white guy vocalists from the 70's.  I was never a big Zeppelin fan, either.  Loved the Stones, who had some funk, and loved Graham Parker, who had funk and a horn section.  Anyway, I just don't get the  connection from AC/DC to Otis Redding.

And, I like the Black Keys more than the White Stripes, but I can't figure out why.

These guys mimic styles and genres all over the map. I could rarely tell, from different album listens, that they were the black keys. Might've well been cruising through XM, covering different decades. Having said that, they're very, very good at it.
