Here we are faced with choice
Shutters and walls or open embrace
Like it or not the human race
Is us all

History is what it is
Scars we inflict on each other don't die
But slowly soak into the DNA
Of us all

Of us all
Us all

I pray we not fear to love
I pray we be free of judgment and shame
Open the vein, let kindness rain
O'er us all

O'er us all
O'er us all
Us all

My sentiments exactly.  Cockburn is a Canadian musical icon in my books.  If the rest of this album is similar to this song, then he is mellowing with age, but who isn't at his age (okay, Trump is an outlier).  There are no rocket launchers in this song, but Bruce is still writing lyrics from his heart.

"If I had a rocket launcher"  Is controversial but I think it is such a wonderfully produced and recorded song. If William played it here it would get a 9 from me.

An easy 9 on the lyrics alone, given the world around us in 2024...

Give it break, please.
Great song great lyrics 6.5 ?
Got to like this.
beautiful melody. And one of the few songs that talks about DNA in a romantically and artistic way but not outlandish. Human change is by way of slowly sinking into our genes. Insightful! ( I have done research in molecular genetics, sorry for nerding out.)
Just lovely..
Everytime I hear this track I have to stop and listen, re-read and soak-in the lyrics

Bruce Cockburn 2023-11-01

We went to see Bruce Cockburn in Nov and he gave a fantastic performance. I love his style and his lyrical outlook. My only regret is not learning about him sooner in life. I have Bill and RP to thank for introducing me to so many great artists, and I'm grateful when I've had the chance to see some of them.

saw this concert tour and it was very good. He is getting up there in age but man, what an artist. Thank you for playing stuff off the new record and I think, of all the tracks available, this one is remarkably beautiful and poignant. I feel like Bruce is a member of my family he's been around so long with me and us. Thank you radio paradise!

The rest of this album is some of Bruce's best work. Soul on a roll is a rocker! Push Come to Shove will have your heart in your throat and King of the Bolero is strange in a very interesting way. Overall it's an album with all we've come to expect from Bruce: thoughtful, emotional and inspiring songs with twists of new innovation throughout. A must-have for Bruce fans.

I agree with you both, friends.  Beautiful song too...
What a beautiful song and experience we are all sharing.

I second that
I saw Bruce perform this twice in the months leading up to this new album's release. I've come to absolutely love this song - so appropriate for our times. I feel like this is his swan song, though I wish him many many happy healthy years ahead. Perhaps his Magnum Opus is a better term :)

Bruce's voice does sound strained.
Maybe this tune is written a little too high for his vocal register?
