Stephen Colbert accepts the 2025 Ripple of Hope Award. Drawing on the legacy of Senator Robert F. Kennedy, Colbert reflected on a formative image from his childhood: RFK breaking bread at Mass with César Chávez on the day Chávez ended his hunger strike. Even then, he understood its meaning — “whatsoever you do to the least of our brothers, you do unto Christ.”

Colbert spoke about returning, again and again, to RFK’s 1966 South Africa words — especially in moments of doubt:
While few can change history, everyone has the opportunity and the obligation to push back against the temptation to despair.

In a time of deep uncertainty and division, he described laughter as a counterpoint to fear — reminding us that while fear may be manufactured, you cannot laugh and be afraid at the same time.

One evening, an elderly Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside each of us.

He said, “My son, the battle is between two ‘wolves’ inside us all. One is evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.

The other is good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.”

“The same fight is going on inside you—and inside every other person, too.”

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf wins?”

The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one that you feed.”

The truth behind the 'walking' statues of Easter Island

In a remote patch of the Pacific Ocean lies Rapa Nui, otherwise known as Easter Island. It’s a tiny, windswept place, famed for its colossal Moai – mysterious stone figures that each weigh more than a Boeing 737 plane.

For years, the island has been the subject of intrigue. Who built the Moai? How did they move such huge statues without the use of modern tools? And where did the society go? The dominant narrative for decades was that conflict and overexploitation of the island’s natural resources led to population collapse. But now, new evidence is painting a radically different picture – one of hardship, maltreatment and ultimately resilience.
