I get that. I'm sure there are interesting insights in the data as well. I think I was reacting to the 'Goldmine' portion of the headline.  Part of what makes RP cool is the general theme of 'they play what they want' without outside pressure and without an algorithm. It's been a pretty good model for 20+ years.

It can be kind of fun and interesting looking through datasets and trying to draw reasons and conclusions. But yes, there are entities who try to use it for malicious and/or greedy purposes.

I don't think so; it feels like a Simpsonsism but that would have been crapified maybe.

I was quickly scrolling thru the playlist comparing the general shape of low-to-high skewed song ratings.  While most show strong 6-7 ratings, it's easy to spot the exceptions.  RP obviously stores the data of these ratings.  I expect William and company deeply analyze this data to see trends in artists and styles and perhaps correlate them to day of week, time of day, current events, etc.  Seems to me those are fascinating data with a ton of information to be gleaned.

@William - have you guys published or considered publishing trend information derived from the playlist times and ratings?  There are so many ways it could be viewed and so many observations that could be made.  If not publishing trends, would you ever consider making an anonymized version of your raw playlist times and ratings data available?  In the hands of a responsible analyst, the data could have a life of their own.

Couldn't a person just harvest the data—anonymously or not—without even being logged in? If you're talking about then targeting individual users with some other content, or tweaking the playlist to maximize retention, I'm 100% certain RP will never go that direction.

But user ratings are almost always invalid. Some people rate things incorrectly because they don't want Beatles in their "My Favorites" playlist, for example, even if they love the Beatles. I'd be more interested in the songs that prompt a skip or stop vs those that get played all the way through more often.
