I work in the dead trees industry and even tho there aren't as many people making things out of slices of dead trees anymore, it was sort of a shock when we ordered $300 worth of dead trees only to be told that our account has been closed because we don't order enough dead trees anymore and anyway the minimum dead trees order is now $500 and they're not going to deliver it either.

That is, the only paper distributor within 500 miles just told a printer that they won't sell them paper.

Wade Davis: Life without wild things
We have forgotten the flocks of passenger pigeons that blotted out the sun, the herds of bison that shook the ground and the untamed places in which we destroyed them. This is ecological amnesia

Yeah, that was at the top of my news feed this am. I do not doubt the science or the earnestness behind the warning(s). Unfortunately, doing anything approaching what they suggest is politically (and practically) infeasible.
(unfeasible? is there a difference? word nerds?)

Where are we going? And why am I in this handbasket?

Last month, deep in a 500-page environmental impact statement, the Trump administration made a startling assumption: On its current course, the planet will warm a disastrous 7 degrees by the end of this century.

The suits are the latest in a small but growing effort to hold Chevron, ExxonMobil, BP, Shell and other major energy companies accountable for the effects of global warming. Legal experts say the challenge is more comprehensive than previous endeavors, and is based on better climate science and more evidence to support a claim of conspiracy among oil company executives.

Poor Americans.  Much in need of crushing paternalism and hyper-active finger-pointing  in order to get anything done.

The USA currently 'enjoys' the lowest excise taxes on gasoline and diesel among the rich OECD club members.  US excise taxes on polluting, maiming, fuel are higher than a number of poor, 3rd world countries.

In fact, a few years, the USA with lots of popular support invaded and occupied Iraq for two purposes.  One to support the US-supported, nuclear weapons backed affirmative action ethnic cleansing program in Israel.  Two, in the name of cheap energy entitlement that is so important to so many Americans.

Lots of countries with high green taxes have an active presence on the part of multinational oil & gas companies.    If anybody can cite a campaign by multinational oil companies against higher excise taxes on dirty fuels, please share.

Congrats to everybody here.   The cheap fuel entitlement is widely shared by Democrats and Trump Republicans.   You have something in common!

I admire the willingness of individual voting Americans to harm their fellow citizens  be it through particulate matter emissions or automobile accidents.
