That's a long-dismissed urban myth. Aspartame was developed as a sweetener about 40 years ago. It is awful stuff, though.

I use erythritol as a sweetener. It is all natural, being made through the fermentation of cane juice. It has no accountable calories, no carbohydrates and is about 2/3 the sweetness of sugar. It triggers no insulin response, neither one way nor the other. You can search for it online. I buy it in one pound bags @ about $6 a bag. It looks similar to sugar.
