jagdriver wrote a huge review (thanks very much!): I don't think I'm going to see George in heaven, knowing that the guy completely lost his way.
Wha????? That is hard for me to believe! Now I'm curious to see it. I'm glad Raspy liked it. My favorite Beatle was also George—overall. I loved the songwriting abilities of John, though.

George Martin: C'mon up here, boys, and have a listen. Now... is there anything you don't like?
George Harrison: Yeah... I don't like your tie.

jagdriver wrote: First of all, I have to say that I'm a BIG Beatle fan, period. I like all of them. They were my pals growing up (except in later years when they'd release another stupid single by Paul that would dominate the airwaves for weeks). I own a copy of George's book (in which John is never mentioned) and have read just about every other Beatle tome out there—including Patty's kiss 'n' tell about her first husband. (I've also read Eric's side in the latter's autobiography.)
**why is that john was never mentioned? i think i'd like to read it, though.
Frankly, with a few exceptions I soon tired of All Things Must Pass (the LP) shortly after it arrived in the early '70s; it's just not a cheerful record and I could give a rat's a__ about the Krishna movement. The rest of George's recordings were very spotty—and that's being kind (the same can be said for the other three former Beatles as well).
Disc 1 was a lot of fun, especially seeing the Fabs as we all knew them when. However, I'm still left wondering if George was really that important of a guitar player. I tend to think not, although he was a trendsetter (wasn't everyone back then?). Certainly his Indian influence on the Beatles' (and others) recordings cannot be overstated, as that and his subsequent relationship with Ravi Shankar changed world music forever.
Disc 2 is heavy on post-breakup, George's solo career, and very heavy on his brand of spiritualism. I watched simply because I'm a Beatles fan, but outside of the Fabs I don't think George's musical contribution to the world amounted to a whole lot. And say what you will, I don't think I'm going to see George in heaven, knowing that the guy completely lost his way.
Olivia is a great lady for having put up with George all of those years, but it's quite apparent that she had a very heavy hand in the telling of this story. To what degree Martin Scorcese offered it up on the GH shrine I don't know. All in all, I'm happy to have watched the show yet am very glad that I didn't have to subscribe to HBO to see it. Unlike the Beatles Mythology Anthology, it's probably not something I'll ever watch again.
EDIT: It was interesting to learn of George's reaction to Phil Spector's ATMP "wall-of-sound" production. I wonder what a "naked" ATMP would sound like.
i love george the most, too. then john. not so much paul. but i love the beatles, though i'm a through-and-through stones girl. i will watch. thanks for your commentary.

That was 10 or so years ago I guess. She sings all the time now. Still makes me cry. She ambushed me the other day. She wanted me to come to her church so I agreed (haven't stepped foot in church in ages). Anyway, she sang and I was sobbing. I know all those people were saying "Wooo! Look at that sinner cry". lol She knew if she told me she was singing I wouldn't come. I'm just so proud of her for over-coming her fear and that feeling never gets old.
You go Mom!

And..........I realize it was your mom most of all, but in addition to that some of those real gospely songs (especially the 3-part harmony ones) can be very stirring, emotionally—whether you're a believer or not. Something about the composition of them and the delivery. One of my best friends' daughters sang one at her grandfather's funeral, and OMG. I'll have to see if she has something recorded. I bet she does.
